There And (Not Quite) Back Again

Although I like the tweaks the original game designers made to HOMM3, one has always frustrated me: the decision to limit starting armies to only two tavern heroes each week.

I assume this change came about because of abuses in multiplay.  Example: recruit Cyan, horde her gremlins, then recruit Neela, horde her gremlins, hire Astral, horde his gremlins, then hire Thane, etc.

(Or better yet, hire Cyan, horde most of her army, have her flee the first battle, then recruit her again and combine all her creatures.)

I always thought this exploit was balanced by the fact that funds are limited.  Sure you could pull this trick (how many times?) six or seven tries on your first day, but after that you've pretty much blown your cash for the week with no major structure upgrades to show for it.

Nevertheless, later versions of HOMM3 corrected this "bug," leading me to ask a simple question: am I the only player who misses this aspect of the original game?

It was an excellent idea from developers. I played the game from its release and abused this trick with tower endless times. Naturally tower was the best town because of that. But this is cheating.

If you miss it, is easy to make a wog mod bringing back the former system.

Tower? How about Necropolis with its undead transformer? You'd be able to unleash hundreds of skeletons on day one.

In this regard, I could certainly understand why the developers disabled the exploit for later versions of HOMM3.  Could you imagine having a 100+ skeleton increase each week and the Cloak of the Undead King?

Still... what fun!

No, you are not the only one. I miss that too. But wait, if you retreat, you still get your new soldiers? lol XD
