so, Fallout 3 was Oblivion with guns, so this one will be Skyrim with guns?

The weapons customizing part looks nice, something similar albeit very limited was present in Metro Last Light(Motherbleeping quad barrel 12 gauge!)

the building your own settlement is a cool feature as well.

Well, besides Fallout 2, no. Doesn't that show they can't do that, fearing the criticism not of the fans, but of the ones that evaluate these games.

Maybe, but it does not feel like Fallout... more like Sims. We'll see.

So Bethesda will develop this themselves? Count me out then. I could barely stand Fallout 3 for more than a few hours and even after the heroic effort from Obsidian to scrap the pile of **** left to them with New Vegas, the result was still not quite the Fallout experience and feel from the first two games. All Bethesda games I've played are like engineers trying hard to write poetry and failing even harder - something crucial is always missing.

Skyrim with guns. Here we go again.

While my girlfriend is absolutely psyched about this one, I'm more sceptical. I didn't like F3 at all. New Vegas had more atmosphere, but a lot of the immersion was ruined by the stupidly small map.

I'm in your boat. I can't say exactly why, but it Fallout 3 just didn't do anything for me. Never even finished it, and didn't think twice about it. Weird, because I adored the first two.

But, being honest, I'm kind of getting burned out on electronic games in general. Does that mean I'm old?

OK, I want to mention two problems with Bethesda games
1- They simply cannot grasp their leveling systems.

I loved Skyrim, but I dropped it the first time I played it. Because when I got to higher levels, every enemy was dying like a fly and it got incredibly boring. Then that legendary skills came along. I started the game anew. It was exciting. Unfortunately legendary skills also didn't help. I was struggling with enemies only for some hours and the skill would go up to a medium level quickly.

The same thing but with different consequences happened with New Vegas. But this time all my skills were full in mid game. I had to spend my points to the skills I was not interested. The gameplay became banal.

They create long games with huge worlds and lots of stories. But they cannot adjust the leveling accordingly. I'm obsessive. I must do every single mission and visit every single corner of the game. That's the reason those games are created the way they were. But in that case, I must not become fully trained in two-handed before even entering the Elven Embassy. It mustn't be that easy. Even the legendary difficulty means nothing at that point when my advancement in my main skill ends during the first quarter of the gameplay.

I've to agree with the leveling, I had great experience in my first Skyrim playthrough until I decided to take the crafting more seriously, then I became a walking god, killing dragons like sewer rats. Changing the difficult to the hardest didn't change anything, the most perilous creatures in the world now were those cliffs.
Had to restart my sword and board guy and try to make him less immortal, and thanks to mods he became very, very mortal... lol, even with crafting.

About fallout 3, I didn't play a lot of it, but I've yet to try new vegas, wtb time.

Probably more selective.

Well, I admit Fallout 3 was just a kid's play, was too easy to complete. Practically you needed a shotgun, an assault rifle and you crushed anyone through.

New Vegas felt more challenging in that aspect, but not as difficult as 1 or 2. Could be because they aren't turn based anymore.

I actually preferred Fallout 3 over New Vegas, it had more atmosphere and immersion. New Vegas felt like they tried too hard to make it more like Fallout 2 and failed. I couldn't get into it, story was stupid.

On the contrary, many believe Fallout 3 was stupid. For example, one cannot join the Enclave in the end, the story of following the father was too shallow and BoS was portrayed as a bunch of do-gooders (when it is known their goal is to preserve pre-war technology). The story was just black and white, unlike New Vegas, where there were shades of gray.

I'm completely hyped about this game! From the little bits of information out, it seems Fallout 4 will be better than 3 or Vegas. YES!!!!

It's my favorite RPG of all time. Well, after Planescape Torment.

Not sure why people compare this game to Skyrim. Skyrim is such a basic story and theme ( dragons, wizards, warriors, swords, come on! ) compared to Fallout! The theme ( a mix of futuristic and political ) and story is better than Skyrim-Oblivion, character builds are great and varied, compared to Skyrim's left and right hand only system with 80 % of the skills in the tree worthless, hmm... What else? Sneak around, stuff a grenade in somebody's pockets and watch him explode? Sneak around, check where enemies are, then place a bunch of land mines and snipe them from afar? The more headshots, the more land mines will remain! Tear people up with a chainsaw or flaming leaf ripper? Awesome tribal dialogue for characters with 1 intelligence! Blow up a nuke and watch the great animation? Five or six ways to solve every god damn quest, as opposed to one or two in Skyrim? Get ghoullified by a thunderbolt and play the ghoul! Do drugs until you're addicted? Cyber implant your character to the rim? Two headed cows? Dialogues with almost every enemy in game? Etc...

Naaa, Skyrim was good, but it also was overrated by most people. Skyrim doesn't have a soul like Fallout does. All Skyrim ever really had over other games was a big ass map and a lot of custom mods, with 95 % of them either unbalanced, over the top or ridiculous ( like alien and predators as extra monsters. Eh boy ). Fallout and Dragon Age beats Skyrim in every other aspect.

I know already which build im gonna do, gonna be 6 str, 8 end, 3 int, 8 cha and the rest 1. 8 Charisma to have 3 partners instead of one, with tons of extra damage, 3 intelligence to create custom weapons for my partners and me, 8 endurance for a huge boost in damage reduction, 6 strength for extra carry capacity and better melee damage. Im gonna tank around in full armor + riot shield and some club while my 2 partners will snipe people.

2 months left of waiting!

It is because Fallout 3 (probably NV) look much alike TES IV Oblivion (in visual appearance). Fallout 4 looks quite different, but it retains that look from Skyrim a bit. We'll see.

I agree that Fallout 3 had much better immersion. Also the skill-checks were much better as they were percentage based as opposed to New Vegas where is simply checked if you had enough X skill/special with 0 or 100% chance for success(and it showed how much you needed). In terms of difficulty I found them both way too easy. Fallout 3 basically encouraged to level repair as it was more efficient than gun-skill in many ways. Also the chinese assault rifles were everywhere. NV didn't do any better really though. My first game I played it through basically with cowboy repeater because I just loved the gun and it was available early on(and enemies never seemed to get much tougher). You could also easily find plasma/laser weapons early on among some rare-weapons. Both games had stupid difficulty systems. FO 3 gave extra exp for harder difficulties thus it actually got easier for good player to play very hard. In NV there was HC mode for food/water/sleep needs which didn't add anything(you could get them all so easy), but just added extra work to find that stuff from inventory. Overall I easily liked FO 3 more(though I loved the plentiful NV references/links to old games).

As for FO4 I'm excited that it's gonna get mods for consoles too. I would've never bought(or rather pre-ordered) it on console without that. It also reminds me from FO 3 for good bit based on the videos I've seen so that's a big plus for me. I just hope they will bring back multiple companions based on charisma from old games. I always found single companion + dog so daft in both new FO-games. And hopefully not too quick access to all the top weapons. The new town-builder sounds like it could be interesting. I just hope it doesn't end up being total gimmick that feels extra work with nothing to gain.

It's a mix. If you have enough charisma and invest enough perks, you cna pass from 1 companion ( the base ) to 3 companions.

http://vault111.com/character/

2 charisma 4 perks makes your companion do 50 % more damage if she/he is your girlfriend/boyfriend

3 charisma 3 perks and your dog becomes an additional companion with 50 % more damage and 100 % more health

5 charisma 3 perks and you can have another companion ( now 2 humans and 1 dog )

8 charisma 3 perks and all your named companions now have 100 % more hp and 50 % more damage.

So the total is 1 dog with 200% hp and 100% extra damage, 1 girlfriend with 100% hp and 100% extra damage, and another companion with 100% hp and 50% extra damage.

It's not 1 extra companion per 2 charisma point like the old school game but it's still very good.

@Kayna
Thanks for the link, didn't know there was a site like that. Sadly a lot of perks seem like old ones from FO3 and NV, but nice to see some new ones too. Anyhow it's a good start at least being able to get another companion

Seems like they changed a bit the SPECIALs too, int being exp modifier rather than extra skill-points. I just hope they changed skill-system to be like old ones(no cap on skills) rather than the 100 max which got filled rather fast

Skills are merged in the stats and perks now. I think. The only thing I dislike so far is how they changed the critical hits from random criticals to a bar that recharges and makes your next attack a critical once its fully charged. And it recharges faster with more luck.

Find it kind of weird.

Yeah the luck change doesn't sound good to me either. Games should have certain amount of unpredictability in them such as critical hits being chance based.

Btw do you know how skill-checks work in FO4(while talking to somebody)? Are they more of chance based like in FO3 or just 100%/0% chance based on like in NV if you meet requirement?

It is not known. There are no skills, only the SPECIAL system. I think it is told Charisma only influences speech checks and prices when trading, or somesuch.

No skill-points at all...? Now I don't really understand the system at all. I heard they took away the level cap... But if my perks I can take are limited by my SPECIALs which won't change much during the game, won't that lead me to getting ton of useless perks and ultimately nothing to do... Or they got unlimited amount of perks to increase single special(or something like that)? Otherwise the system would make no sense at all...

Well there are no skills, for SPECIAL system covers that. (Boy, are they wrong.)

However, one will get one perk per level (again, why not changing it to three levels for one perk), but many will have bonus ranks, or so it is told.

Some tell that skill system does not make Fallout a unique game. Maybe that's true, but without the system, much is changed and may simplify gameplay.

But what is stranger is that there are skill books seen, at least only in trailer video.
