Heroes ∞

I haven't thought through the game mechanics thoroughly, so here are a few new ideas that I'd like to see in a Heroes game...

- Forging alliances (diplomacy, ambassadors, etc.)
- A revamp of the creature upgrades. Instead of the regular creature upgrade, something different... creature training. No  upgrades upgrades but each creature has 3 looks to choose from (all looks have exactly the same stats). Training consists of creatures learning new abilities. More information soon.
- The story (1st campaign) humans arrive in a strange world and have to acclimate.
- 9 creatures per faction (4 core, 3 elite, 2 champion or 3 core, 4 elite, 2 champion)
- 3 racial skills per faction (hero can choose one).
- Each faction has a different summon elemental spell.
- ...

Factions:

HAVEN

Inspiration:
Medieval Europe.

Blue, crimson, white, gold.
Symbols:
Cross (deprecated), griffin.

...

3. The Creatures

Core:

Spearman
Type: Living (Human), Walker, Melee
Appearance: [url=http://imgur.com/a/0Od0F]Inspiration (3)[/url]
Gender: Male
Summary:
The spearman are the “tanks” of the Empire, heavily armored and armed with a spear and a shield they are one of the least vulnerable core creatures.
They utilize their shield to deflect arrows and block attacks. Meanwhile, their spears offer them a breathing space for their attacks.
Movement-wise, however, they are at a disadvantage. Their heavy armor and weapons make it burdensome to walk.
Another weakness is their rear.
Abilities:
Thrust
The spearman uses its weapon at a distance so the enemy can’t retaliate.
Passive ability.
Block
The spearman has a chance to block a ranged attack using its shield.
This ability relies on the hero’s luck.
Passive ability.
Parry
There is a chance to block the enemy’s melee attack and counterattack.
This ability relies on the hero’s luck.
Passive ability.
Spear Throw
The spearman throws its spear at an enemy. Only can be used at a short distance.

The number of shots is increased if the hero owns an ammo cart.
Active ability.
Dwelling: Guardhouse
Gameplay:

Archer
Type: Living (Human), Walker, Ranged
Appearance: [url=http://imgur.com/a/ORXb4]Inspiration (3)[/url]
Gender: Male
Summary:
Skilled crossbowmen that shoot with great precision. They play a vital role in reducing enemy numbers without any casualties.
The archers’ are equipped with medium armor and they can take a hit or two. Although, in close combat they aren’t as efficient as they are from a distance.
Movement-wise archers aren’t at a disadvantage, given that their crossbows don’t weigh much.
Abilities:
Cover
Protects a chosen ally, shooting at enemies that try to attack it.
Has a cooldown. Active ability.
Searing Bolt
The archer fires a flaming bolt that does fire damage to the targeted enemy.
Has a cooldown. Active ability.
Penetrating Shot
The archer’s bolt pierces the targeted enemy’s armor, lowering its defenses.
The debuff lasts 1 turn. Passive ability.
No Range Penalty
The shots are as effective at longer distances.
Requires artifact. Passive ability.
Dwelling: Archery Range
Gameplay:

Priestess
Type: Living (Human), Walker, Caster
Appearance: [url=http://imgur.com/a/MDxvx]Inspiration (4)[/url]
Gender: Female
Summary:
Priestesses are devoted primarily to the practice of air magic.
They cast spells and support their allies in combat.
Their robes don’t offer any physical protection and they don’t possess any expertise besides magic making them one of the most vulnerable at the battlefield.
Depending on the hero’s chosen magical school, they can also cast either light or dark spells.
Also, they are resistant to air magic and dark or light magic accordingly.
Abilities:
Winds of Displacement
The priestess pushes an enemy creature in a chosen direction.
Has a cooldown. Active ability.
Wings
Gives a targeted ally “wings”, gifting him with a flying status.
Has a cooldown. Active ability.

Has a cooldown. Active ability.
Curse (Dark Magic)
Curses an enemy leaving him disoriented and deals damage over time.
Has a cooldown. Active ability.

The priestess is spiritually connected with the hero. When she runs out of mana, she channels the hero’s mana and vice versa. This ability is activated once a spell is being casted.
Passive ability.
Dwelling: Convent
Gameplay:

Bandit
Type: Living (Human), Walker, Melee
Appearance: [url=http://imgur.com/a/0UK5m]Inspiration (2)[/url]
Gender: Male
Summary:
The scum of the Empire. Bandits are sellswords that lack a moral compass. They can be hired for a price, but they aren’t reliable in the long run.
Their knowledge of anatomy makes them skilled killers, they know where to strike and deal a great amount of damage.
Fast and efficient, although cowardly if the odds are against them.
Their light armor helps them stay agile and swift, but it doesn’t offer much protection.
Abilities:
Poison Blade
The bandit applies poison to its weapon.
Requires artifact. Passive ability.
Loot (Plunder)
Steals a random amount of gold from the enemy. The gold is gained only if the battle is won.

Unfinished and without any info about the creatures, one can hardly say much about the lineups.

On the game mechanics...
...more diplomacy is always a good idea for HoMM.
...not sure on the training. could be good or bad, depending how it can be done. Having different looks is definitely a nice idea, not sure wether it should be chosen, though.
...the story does not tell much yet^^
...creaturewise...9 creatures?! No Choices here?! That seems large...
...3 racial skills...but only one class?
...different summon elemental spells: which will be summoned by whom?

Well I always start with a line-up and then expand. Regarding the number of creatures, I prefer a diversity within factions. I'm not sure still about the number of racial skills but there will be several classes (and sub-classes or as I'd like to call them - Specializations) per faction - 2 faction-unique classes (Might & Magic, each with their own sub-classes) and a few neutral classes (again with sub-classes). The summon elemental spells will depend on which magic skill the hero has learned (for example, a hero with a fire magic skill can summon fire elementals, etc.).

Ah, that makes it clearer. Thanks for the answers! =)

Now the new stuff...

Haven
I personally dislike bringing in stuff from RL directly, thus I do not like "Christianity" and "Rome" in here. I am curious to know, though, why these are 'former', and not anymore!

The Spearman inspirations seem reasonable.
Those for Archer are very different and I am not sure they should have different weapons - I think you should decide for bows OR crossbows.
Priestesses look quite alike, but are definitely reasonable.
Bandit...I am not sure wether I like it in Haven or not. Appearance fits.
Howler...how trendy wolves in Haven are nowadays. Okay, though not so my taste - in Haven.
Inquisitor ... if I had a hammer...
Swordsman inspirations are interesting. Dark and Gloomy.
The Griffins all look relatively beastly for HoMM standards but I think I like that.
Horseman does not sound like a champion. I say name it Chevalier or such. Inspiration looks are fitting.

Overall, haven seems a bit more dirty and sinister, but I cannot say I dislike that. It also is a typical haven with almost only human units, but for haven, thats ok.

Inferno
No general comments.

I always wanted to have imps looking more like that than they did in HoMm so far
Gog is classical, more or less
No comments on succubus.
Your cerberus pics all look a bit strange to me, not so much my taste.
Hell Charger...demonic beast, well...not thaaat much my taste, but ok, if one wants a demonic beast in...
I think I do like the fiend.
Nice to see the ifrit in.
Abyssal worm is fine as well!
Great to have the Fallen in

overall, I often think that inferno could use some different units. This is a reasonable demon lineuo, though.

I like your approach to a more worldly concept in the Haven, though in that sense the name of the town is perhaps the first thing I'd change. I like the pics you've chosen, and the only two units I have issues with are the two most "religious" ones: Priestesses and inquisitors. Even griffins, which I dislike being regarded as humans' pets, look really interesting in your lineup. As for the cavalier, I like the name "cataphract" (as I showed in my own thread), but it might not give the idea of a swift unit, for cataphract used to be heavy cavalry, if I'm not mistaken.

I've never liked Inferno as a town, they are just "too evil" for my taste. However I think your lineup is quite good, though Cerberus and Charger might have a too similar role, perhaps? As for the champion units, I like the Fallen as much as I dislike the Worm (never been very fond of worms). And you turned my beloved Final Fantasy's Ifrit into the dark side! Aggh!

Good job! Expectant to know more about it all!

Thanks for the feedback!

Haven

If I were to describe Haven in two words, I'd say dark and gritty. As to why it's taken from RL, partly it's because I hate shiny overdone armor and unrealistic weapons and partly for the story. As a faction they are morally ambiguous, so they aren't good nor evil.

Haven story - Whirpool. Humans get stranded on a new (magical) land. They have to adapt to survive in this new world. The first campaign is called "The Settlers". A detailed version soon...

The concepts I posted are just for inspiration. Some are quite different because I like certain aspects of each artwork. For instance, the archer will be a crossbowman; I liked the shoulder piece in the first artwork, in the second artwork (H7 official) I like the armor and crossbow but dislike the shoulder piece and in the third picture I like the color palette and the style in general. I'll use them to make my own.

The "religious" units are there to add some magic to the faction.

I'll rename the horseman, thanks for the suggestions.

Inferno

Info is lacking because I haven't thought them through, but I'd like them not to be the bad guys. Quite unruly, but not evil. Regarding worship, I was thinking about a Fire god/entity, but I'm open to suggestions.

When I saw that hell charger art, I immediately wanted it in the line-up. What makes it unique is that it's a living battering ram. It could knock down any town's gates.

I didn't really find good pictures for the cerberus, but I'd like it to be slim, furless, with charred skin although not bone-y and pointy ears. I have some other concepts that I haven't posted (I wanted to limit them to 3-5).

* Stronghold line-up added. There is one open core or elite slot. I was going to put an Orcish mauler, but I put that idea in the trash. Wolf rider is also in the trash. So, I need some ideas.

Nice update! Keep'em comin'!

Necropolis: First off, as a big fan of the Egyptian style, I hope you don't give up on the Egyptian aesthetics, even if it is for another faction.
-I like the chimera and its concept art, but I can't help feeling that it belongs more in a Warlock lineup. However, if you "undead it up" a bit, of course it will fit, but I think we would be missing a nice replacement for dungeon's manticore (if you even mean to introduce it), which I've never really been fond of, at least not the H3 version.
-The chariot is a wonderful newcomer!! About time a chariot was introduced in a lineup!
-I've never been friends with the idea of a bone dragon, even being Necropolis my favourite faction on H2, but I gotta admit that with such design it is hard to say "no" xD.

Sylvan: The expectable faces, which is ok, and again the artwork chosen is a good one.
-The beastmaster idea is pretty appropriate. Perhaps shapeshifting powers for this buddy?
-The pegasus rider is cool, though it's a bit hard to imagine as a champion unit. It'll have to kick ass really hard! I'm very glad you didn't use a green dragon.
-The abscence of the unicorn keeps me happily wondering what lineup it will show up in

Stronghold: Well, a stronghold without orcs is a bit like a pizza without tomato sauce: Doable, and perhaps even tasty, but a bit strange when you open up the menu xD.
As for the missing unit, how about something human? You know, to humanise a bit the faction. You can make up a steed different from horses, camels or lizards. Something like one of those tauntauns from Star Wars

Well there will certainly be some egyptian-inspired architecture in one or two factions. Perhaps a [url=http://imgur.com/a/WZoOo]Sphinx[/url] as a neutral unit. The unicorn will be a neutral unit as well.

Anyways, time for some warfare units. A hero has 2 slots plus the default, the catapult. You can choose 2 out of 4 different units.

HAVEN

Austringer - [url=http://imgur.com/a/gpNC7]inspiration[/url]

The austringer's role is to scout the enemy's forces and assess the dangers before striking. They are a spy network that communicates through their airborne partners, the falcons.

Physician's Tent - [url=http://imgur.com/a/dncIA]inspiration[/url]

No battle lacks wounded soldiers and casualties. The physicians take care of the injured. They aid those they can save, give medicine and ointment to the ones that have been burned or poisoned.

Ammo Cart - [url=http://i.imgur.com/bzfMcf5.png]inspiration[/url]

It provides your armies with extra ammunition.

Ballista - [url=http://imgur.com/a/87Tka]inspiration[/url]

No armor can stop the bolts that are fired from these giant crossbowian contraptions.

Trebuchet - [url=http://imgur.com/a/ZfIF0]inspiration[/url] (default)

These war machines can turn the most impenetrable of fortresses to rubble.

Note: These machines aren't resistant to magic. In addition, they are quite vulnerable to fire magic.

Bonus

The first neutral hero class is the Architect. They can specialize in war machines and become Siege Engineers, building more efficient war machines that can cause devastating damage to the enemy's forces. (note: Siege Engineers improve the catapult and ballista only, in the case of the Haven faction)

NECROPOLIS

Abomination - [url=http://imgur.com/a/76wMv]inspiration[/url] (default)

These undead giants are the perfect siege weapon. They hurl rocks at castle walls.

Corpse Wagon - [url=http://i.imgur.com/lSsxLzx.jpg]inspiration[/url]

After a battle, they are used for transporting those that died so they can be reanimated.

Ballista - [url=http://i.imgur.com/gPxPydb.jpg]inspiration[/url]

...

SYLVAN

Ballista - [url=http://i.imgur.com/ROW07He.png]inspiration[/url]

Ent - [url=http://i.imgur.com/l5jYD15.jpg]inspiration[/url] (default)

Some treants specialize in the art of sieges.

I had an idea regarding new mechanics for a potential new game: variable army slots.

Heroes start with 4 slots. This represents their inexperience and resulting inability to manage and coordinate many different troops at once. This also serves to limit, but not eliminate, ridiculous army chaining.
At level 5, 5 slots.
Level 10, 6.
They get their last slot at 15.

Obviously numbers could be changed. Just a concept.

Thanks!

@Tiptoe_McGuffy: That is a nice concept, it gives a somewhat realistic approach. Maybe instead of army slots, they can be limited to a creature tier, or perhaps have some kind of a penalty for having a higher tier (level 1-5 - core creatures, 5-10 core & elite, 10+ every tier).

A new feature: Mounts

HAVEN

Destrier - [url=http://imgur.com/a/RTwlv]inspiration[/url]
Quote:
A Destrier is the Ferarri of the horse world. Richer knights would take these big beasts into tournaments, and occasionally into battle, but this breed's foul temperance and lack of stamina made it's smaller cousin, the courser, a more popular choice for hard battle.

Courser - [url=http://imgur.com/a/h9F1I]inspiration[/url]
Quote:
The Courser is more common than the destrier. Smaller and more practical, these are common for use in battle. Still a fine war horse.

Palfrey - [url=http://imgur.com/a/jwlmm]inspiration[/url]
Quote:
The Palfrey is a riding horse, suitable for distance and comfort. It has a unique, smooth gait, making it more comfortable than other horses.

Garron - [url=http://imgur.com/a/kOvVx]inspiration[/url]
Quote:
Garrons are hairy, hardy horses used for snowy/mountainous climates, useful for getting passengers or cargo to otherwise inaccessible places.

Griffin (Special) - [url=http://imgur.com/a/jxUvY]inspiration[/url]

Griffins aren't nearly as common or comfortable as horses, but they can reach remote areas effortlessly. Only a skilled rider can hold their reins. (Note: Only available in the campaign)

INFERNO (not sure about the names)

Infernal Stallion - [url=http://i.imgur.com/dUk4eSa.jpg]inspiration[/url]

Hellicorn - [url=http://i.imgur.com/Jb4KIjo.jpg]inspiration[/url]

Leaper - [url=http://i.imgur.com/2Hzp3GV.png]inspiration[/url]

Hell Hound - [url=http://i.imgur.com/7D5H8Gj.jpg]inspiration[/url]

...

NOTE: The mounts primarily affect speed (both in battle and on the AM), some increase the number of artifacts a hero can carry, and some unique ones can fly(griffin), etc. They can be purchased at the stables. Some heroes start with mounts, others without (although when selecting a map, you can choose mount as a bonus).

Yep, sorry I'm pretty disorganized ATM. I would have used BBcode's spoiler to condense the overall info, but it isn't available on this forum.
I guess the best alternative would be put links to pdf files, but I have a lot of unfinished stuff, so I guess it'll have to wait. I'll put everything in the first post until then. And just post whenever I update it.

About women... Well, I pick the gender that I feel is more apt to the unit. Although, since it's a fantasy game with lots of creatures/beasts, the majority don't belong to a gender.

UPDATE: updated the first line-ups with albums. Added some bonus cerberus, skeleton, ghoul & lich concepts.

UPDATE: Fortress line-up added.
