Poll Question:
The Succession Wars: Good or Evil?

Everyone who has played Heroes of Might and Magic II has tried the campaign at least once, of that I'm sure. So, which lord did you choose to serve first, and why? Share all that you would like to on this matter!

While I eventually had a saved game from both campaigns, which I'd played alternatively, I chose to serve Roland, simply because he was on the side of justice, and the idea of being a refugee knight fighting to save Enroth from the evil brother was appealing to me. Besides.... Who can ignore the plights of a framed man? For me, the choice was obvious.

Hah, well now.... I didn't think Archibald had attracted so many loyal followers because of his facial hair! Now, why hasn't anyone touched the subject of his rosy cheeks and bloodshot eyes? I guess those are more of his subtle charms.

if you think about it, Roland ended up suffering a whole lot more from winning the war than he ever would have if Archibald stayed king lol

Ah, but how many more would've suffered if he hadn't won, or even tried? Over the years, Archibald's rule would've worsened. He would've conquered his brother and gained more support from people that would be too afraid to oppose him. Anyone who didn't join would've been slaughtered. Even if someone else gathered an army and eventually stopped him, the amount of people that were killed, or corrupted, would be a lot higher than the event in which Roland acted immediately.

meanwhile, Roland's victory led to the whole world being set on fire, causing thousands and thousands of people to die and forcing the survivors to basically invade another planet, not exactly a great outcome IMO lol

on the other hand, Archibald probably would have been able to wipe out the Kreegans before they could even think about putting Armageddon's Blade together, lol

Archibald actually did stop the Kreegan invasion. On global scale he helped Enroth much more than the goodish Roland.

Honestly, I think blaming the Reckoning on Roland's victory is a little unfair. Gelu's mental decline was already in motion before the Succession Wars had finished. Roland had nothing to do with his problems, and we all know that these problems that caused the Reckoning. If anything, Catherine would be more to blame for handing Armageddon's Blade to Gelu, perhaps Tamar even more so for not clarifying himself about the future.

Regardless of whether Archibald could protect his possessions from other evils or not, having a tyrant as your leader has never been a good thing.

but if Archibald won, there would not have been an Armageddon's Blade for Gelu to use because he and Catherine would have slaughtered all the Kreegans in no time flat lol

with no Roland to marry, Catherine would have probably stayed in Erathia and there would probably be no fall of Steadwick and no Restoration Wars, maybe even no Lord Haart to murder King Gryphonheart, the devils would likely be wiped ahead of time, it's a win for everyone lol

The only thing about delving into the Butterfly Effect is that the possibilities are simply endless. There could be so many different outcomes to one simple event. Let's use the 'If Archibald had won', for example: He could've fallen ill and died shortly after succession, he could've been assassinated by an ambitious subject, he could've become maddened by the power he'd achieved and eventually create an artifact like Armageddon's Blade, he might've started a conquest for Erathia, he might've let the Kreegan invasion continue to serve some dark purpose, he might've destroyed them and taken Armageddon's Blade for himself.... The list goes on, and all the while, thousands upon thousands of other possibilities are going on, some of which may, or may not be, worse than with Roland as king.

The matter of 'What would happen if Archibald reigned?', is really just one of personal perspective. You claim it would be good, but I'm going to be stubborn and say that I think Archibald would've eventually destroyed humanity's foundations and turned the world into a torturous underworld.

it's very true, this is all a what if, but ultimately there are only so many ways to blow up the planet, a far worse fate than all of the above, and I really don't think Archibald would have enabled that to happen

you are hard on Archibald honestly IMO, in Might and Magic 7 we can see he's not a completely heartless, soulless snow, he does have standards and is clearly against the Kreegans, it's not impossible his nefarious means were all working towards an end of protecting the planet lol

either way good to debate this, it shows the hidden nuance in these characters
