Portus' 10-faction line up

Hi there! For those who never get enough threads on fans' versions of the game, here goes mine! I've created these manual book-like teaser pages in an attempt to make them more amusing for you to read through and to give a more accurate description of what I look for in a Heroes game.

First off, I'd like to make clear that I own none of the artwork. I wish I was skilled at drawing, but not being that the case, I have had to cope with beautiful works found on the internet. I have customised some of them to bring them closer to my idea, though. If you recognise any of the images as yours, consider it done with full respect and admiration for your talent!

Leaving other game rules that I've thought about on the side, I'll just focus on the towns. Hence a few general features:

1) I know many of you love having lots of creatures and hero types to use. Well, regarding this, I'm a more classic guy, so this is the first fact: One hero, six creatures per faction! (I know many will stop reading right here)

2) The upgrading of the creatures will happen in a WOG fashion (battling) and NOT building an upgraded dwelling. This way, how powerful your troops become will uniquely depend on the use you make of them. Their progress is divided, as in WOG, in 10 levels. At level 6 the name and looks of the creature change (the only purpose is to give a clue about the level, for it'll be significantly more challenging to fight a level 10 creature than a level 1 rookie).

3) The distribution of the creatures follows kind of HVI-VII tier system:
A) Core tier: 2 creatures per faction.
B) Elite tier: 2 creatures per faction.
C) Supreme tier (I prefer this name rather than Champion): 1 creature per faction.
D) Emblem tier: This is a creature that roughly represents the culture of its faction, this is, the first soldier that might come to your mind when you think about the corresponding faction. As for its power, this is the creature whose power ranges the most from level 1 to 10. It starts as some kind of mid-powered core creature, and at level 10 it almost reaches supreme tier power (not such high traits, but brilliant abilities). There is 1 emblem tier per faction, and this is the first creature you get, even if core creatures are weaker (they'll be the emblem creature's backup). Its dwelling is also the first creature-generating dwelling you can build (normally it'll be already built at the beginning of a game).

I know it is possible to go much deeper into how each faction works, but I'd like to focus on the overall idea, at least by now.

So now I'll try to upload the pics and hope for the best that they look fine and of course, that you find them worth reading!

That's all by now

Love the idea of doing it in images, but I hope for your proposal's further sake that you make the font more readable as it is veeeeery eye-straining.

Thank you!

I guess I've spent just too much time in front of that font and I got used to it xD. If it really becomes a deal, let me know and I'll work on it. Thanks for letting me know!

Definitely interested in the system but will have to join the "font's to hard to read"-crowd. I feel emblem tier is a bit to... humanoid. Something that's a bit more interesting or different would be appreciated.

I'm already on it (on the font issue). Darn, it's hard to find a font that kind of fits the mood and is readable at the same time!

I would say that as well as the font, the setup is off. To my mind, the traditional way where you write the text in and put the picture underneath is better than trying to cram all the text into the picture itself. Oh and find another name for the lowest tier, Basic or something like it maybe.

As for the factions, first the issues:
Alcazar - Swap Raider and Trapper, because no matter how good the latter is, it's still a goblin.
Borough - Praetorian feels too powerful to be first tier, and Monk ought to be swapped with Halberdier.
Hive - Hive feels like the wrong name for this faction.
Elysium - Hunter feels it should be at least at Core Tier. Also hard to figure this faction out, it feels like a mish-mash.
Krysta - Swap Miner and Pixie.
Necropolis - Swap Vampire and Phantom, and find a different name for the Cataphract.
Orichalem - Change Amazon to Naga (if that's what they are).
Shinto - Nothing much to say.
Tesla - Move sorcerer to Elite, Basilisk to Core and Drone to Emblem.
Zigarut - Two creatures at Supreme tier, but every other faction has one.

Other than that, good work excellent imagination shown both with the names and with the lineups.

Excellent comment! I'll try and explain some of the decisions.

First, I will remark the importance of the emblem tier: it is not the weakest creature in the faction; on the contrary, it intends to be the "humanoid" most powerful being in the faction (leaving crussaders and thanes on the side) while it kind of represents the standard warrior from that town. That is why -kiryu- I have kept it pretty humanoid. I know nagas, centaurs, skinks, etc are considered intelligent beings, and there is no reason not to use them as the emblem tier. I just want them to look as humanoid as possible. As for their power, they are some kind of middle ground between core and elite, but as they level up they develop slightly more powerful traits and skills than the average evolution other tier creatures might experience.

Anyway, it's not a competition on which creature in each faction kicks the most ass xD. As you can see, there are only six creatures per faction, so it turns necessary to use all of them to arrange a good strategy.

This said, I'll comment on the factions where I feel there's something extra to say:

Borough: Praetorian -which is emblem, not core- is a badass defender. I intentionally tried to make it slightly overpowered to make up for paladin's weakness compared to other supreme creatures. As for the halberdier, I guess the problem is that I couldn't find a more impressive pic, but they are supposed to be some of the finest warriors, and I mean to make them very combinable with praetorians to create an unstoppable duo. I chose monks as core because I want them to be somewhat weak and because I want Knights to  have a support unit from the first steps of the game.

Hive: I chose the name because when I think of these cities, I think of a beehive with a big buzz and a lot of sh*t happening all around. Something pretty chaotic. I know bees are tidy beings, though xD. Any suggestions?

Elysium: This faction would be better understood if I could find more accurate pictures. But I can tell you it is somewhere between aztec/mayan looks and forest watchers (but not as cute as what we usually find in Heroes lately). The emblem is the hunter because it is supposed to start as the usual nice elf archer, but it ends up as a killing machine with a bow at high levels.

Necropolis: Don't you like the word cataphract? xD it sounds great to me! Any suggestions?

Orichalcum: Yes, they are naga, I just wanted to use a different name for the warrior unit and not the race name. I know I've done it with centaurs, but if I am to change something for the sake of consistency, I think I'll change centaur's name.

Zigurat: I understand the confusion; there's only one, the jackal, but at high levels it can summon mummies -which would be some kind of weak core tier- out of corpses on the battlefield. I haven't explained this because I didn't want to go too deep into abilities.

Again, thank you for your criticism!

Well the traditional name for this faction is Dungeon, but in H4 they used Asylum, which given your description seems pretty apt.

Oh it's a good name right enough, but not for that unit, it's more what you'd expect to call heavy cavalry in Borough, Shinto or Zigarut. As for suggestion, Death knight, Black Knight, Dread Knight, Reaper.

It's not so much that you didn't want to call them a different name as the name you chose to use. If I was going to do it I'd perhaps go for Something like Sarpasha (a portmanteau of sarpá and raksha) and Urumsha (a portmanteau of urumi and raksha)

Ah right.

Well, I've changed the font! I've also made a few minor changes based on the criticism. Some of the things I was criticised for haven't been changed either because I disagree or because I haven't found a replacement that satisfies me yet. But at least your eyes won't hurt!
