Proposal for fun: Normandopolis

DISCLAIMER: this is merely for entertaining use. Hope you enjoy the reading! Squee! If you don’t know what this is about, this is a proposal based on Mass Effect Universe. There are links as reference here and there, if you happen to get interested in the real game. And no, I’m not making propaganda. It’s just me fusing two franchises I like together.

BACKGROUND

As Ashan grows duller and duller and their councilors seem not to have found peace amongst themselves, visitors from distant lands settle down in an attempt to prevent a secret society to bring the Reapers back by channeling the boundaries of magic from the Dragon Gods. Creating a Reaper from a thoroughly magical being would bring unprecedented chaos upon not only Ashan, but over the entire galaxy. Indoctrination of all forms of known magic, entities and a most variable set of specializations, greatly decreases the potential of Alliance forces to fight back – still, luckily limited by a terrible skill system, something that Reapers didn’t foresee.

Once again, Commander Shepard is sent to solve this mystery by Admiral Hackett, who promptly presents a set of nightmarish things for Shepard to do. As if it wasn’t enough with their regular missions, he sent the Commander to Ashan. How bad could that be?

Meanwhile, some of his crewmates were assigned to other missions, so he has to carefully coordinate the whole thing and settle his capabilities into a very bizarre skill wheel, hoping against hope that it won’t mess with his real abilities.

TOWN NORMANDOPOLIS
Set carefully and stealthily on a cliff side, the Normandy becomes a temporarily military camp in the shapes of those around Ashan. EDI, with some help from late Legion, cracked a Reaper code enabling them to create small mass relays, allowing them to bring units directly from other planets. Javik, the Prothean in Normandy’s crew, would then tell others that primitives in Ashan would call these relay devices ‘dwellings’. Stupid primitives.
As they don’t need to build things, ‘buildings’ come in shape of crew members, which will make available everything needed for Normandopolis to evolve and interact with Ashan. Some of the crew and their references if compared with Ashan factions:
Barla Von (market place) – this Volus accepted a proposal as to coordinate commercial issues within Normandopolis boundaries, by establishing a market place to commute with the locals.
• EDI-Normandy (fort, citadel, castle) – as you upgrade the Normandy weapons and shields systems, EDI will become more and more able to defend Normandopolis from external threat. Kinetic shiels, proton cannons, thermal readers and other contraptions are available. Very powerful.
Admiral Hackett (village hall, town hall, city hall, capitol) – he’s the one to pay your wages, and as you advance into Ashan realms and strengthen your footing, your wages rise.

HEROES

1. Commander Shepard – this is the guy that’s bound to save the galaxy from Reapers threat, one way or the other. In addition to that, he also must deal with less urgent missions and some unpredictable events, including this Ashan situation, which came as a shock in face of the surmounting Reaper threat, showing that these entities know no boundaries when it comes to domination and harvest of all organic life. So, assembling some companions, Shepard took in his stride to Ashan.
Hero Class: Human Spectre
Hero Specialization: Savior of the Galaxy – He is simply THE Commander Shepard. All troops under his command have a boost in stats, morale, destiny and mind resistance. All troops on other heroes and other heroes stats are also boosted while Commander Shepard is active and hired.

2. Liara T’soni – Liara is an Asari, one of Shepard’s oldest companions, either by age and by time knowing her. Very skillful with biotics, she is also the current Shadow Broker, a intel negotiator with plenty of contacts spread out in all the Galaxy. But, somehow, she missed Ashan. Now, using all available resources, she’ll help Shepard figure out what the heck the Reapers found in Ashan that they were lured so far from the other civilized worlds.
Hero Class: Asari Scientist
Hero Specialization: Shadow Broker – Liara can gather info on any enemies on the premises, numbers, levels, skills, artifacts or whatever else possible, based on map explored. She can be very persuasive on the locals when she threatens to flay them alive with her mind
.
3. Garrus Vakarian – accompanying Shepard almost as long as Liara is this Turian named Garrus. And he is one who people won’t want to mess with, unless they want to get a bullet in their forehead. Specialized in long ranged weapons, he is also the one who calibrates Normandy’s weapons. As it couldn’t be any different, he’s representing the Turians in Ashan, and also as an advisory capacity to help leading some specialized units who can be sent from Palaven to fight for their cause, sparing some few from their burning homeworld.
Hero Class: Turian Official
Hero Specialization: Archangel – Garrus can user his sniper rifle in or outside battle, being able to take down some units before engaging battle, if enemy is in range. In battle, Garrus can inflict critical on foes as an innate ability. It stacks with other critical-bending abilities, items or spells)
.
4. Urdnot Wrex – a Krogan, responsible for all Krogans, Wrex is very incisive and powerful, and in spite of his rude manners, he has a good take on how things work. He is also one of the oldest Shepard’s companions and owns his a great debt. Now that his species are saved from the Genophage, he can hire as many Krogans as he needs from Tuchanka, and no one will waver or question his command. Although he sees Ashan a ‘land of puss***’, he won’t hold his hand to put a bullet in the guts of even a butterfly if it’s in his way.
Hero Class: Krogan Warlord
Hero Specialization: Stimulant Pack – Wrex is not just a hero. He is a brute and can take these stimulant packs once per battle, enabling him to enter the fray himself. His overall strength is a fraction of his whole army, so he is a small army for himself. If he gets defeated, he’ll retreat back to his hero-role, which he doesn’t fancy much.

5. Tali’Zorah Vas Normandy – Tali is a young Quarian whom Shepard save years ago. And since then, she’s becoming ever so valuable as a tech expect and geth advisor. Loyal to Shepard, especially now that the Quarians have their homeworld back, she’ll lend all the Flotilla prowess to assist in any means necessary.
Hero Class: Quarian Admiral
Hero Specialization: Emergency Induction Port – after analyzing the composition of Ashan’s atmosphere, Tali discovered that her Induction Port can release a lethal reaction on the surroundings, which made her thrilled, because it is usually the opposite that happens with her. Now, not only to get herself drunk, the Emergency Induction Port can safely cast a degradation aura on the battlefield, affecting any Ashanite with random ailments. The effect refreshes every 2 turns, even when dispelled.

6. Feron – as a way of making Liara a favour, Feron is handing his stealth abilities to Shepard given that Thanos, an old Commander’s drell companion, has died. Drells are silent killers, also good snipers and very much skilled in biotics as well, not to mention their perfect memory, which would be proved crucial when exploring this new world and meeting many new elements.
Hero Class: Drell Assassin
Hero Specialization: Drell’s Stealth – this hero is can inflict punctual damage and statuses on enemy ranks with different sort of traps without being noticed. On the adventure map, he can also set traps and conceal his armies from enemy vision while standing still. Only a very skilled Scout can sense his presence, or when armies get too near each other.

7. EDI (mobile platform) – this flexible platform in the shape of a hot chick is how EDI goes about Normandy’s vicinity, and that’s also how she raises Joker’s morale. EDI is a fully aware AI and has all programing restrictions unshackled. Her advantages come in the shape of computing quality and researching of data so fast that you … see? She already did whatever I was going to describe. 2 billion times. She rocks!
Hero Class: Infiltration Unit
Hero Specialization: Unshackled AI – Given her prowess as an unshackled AI, she studies the best variables of the outcome of the battle and controls the battle by herself without your permission. You don’t have to do anything. She’ll eventually win – most of the times. Well, she might lose once in a while. Or did you think that was all a joke?

8. Kirrahe – The Salarian Kirrahe is Shepard’s acquaintance for a long while, and really truthful in his word when offered help in whichever means necessary. With the Death of Mordin Solus, Shepard saw the necessity of bringing in Kirrahe in his instead to help coordinating Salarian troops, and also to keep a fair diplomacy with the dalatrass. Also, with his expertise in scouting and recognizance, Kirrahe helps gathering intel on many things as they explore Ashan.
Hero Class: Salarian Major
Hero Specialization: STG strategist – as Kirrahe explores Ashan lands, all flagged buildings have a weekly bonus due better management. Logistics skills of all allied heroes also have a bonus on explored areas. Units under his command spends less ammunition in combat and they can spot traps with high chances of success.

CORE UNITS

Salarian Scout – available at Sur’Kesh Dwelling. Salarians are skinny, somehow weak, but have some high-tech contraptions that can, eventually, compensate their physical weaknesses. Considered amphibians, they have some elemental peculiarities. They also have high pitched voices which don’t help with anything. And they have a short lifespan, which can become even shorter whenever they go to battle. They are walking ranged units.
Abilities (Water/Earth Resistance – they take 25% less damage from water or earth based spells or abilities); (Fire Weakness – they take 25% more damage from fire based spells or abilities); (Scorpion Heavy Handgun – losing 1 turn to load it, the salarian scout can shoot anywhere with his Scorpion Heavy Handgun, where it sets a small detonation device. If it is shot on the ground, it’ll explode when a unit gets next to it, damaging all targets around it. If set on an enemy foe, it’ll explode as soon as that enemy takes any action, delaying or even cancelling that action).

Salarian Engineer – upgraded form of Salarian Scout. Better armored and having their own dog tags, Salarian engineers have a small gadget which allows them switching weapons in combat, either attacking with fire or with ice.
Added abilities (Tech Armor – increases physical damage resistance against the first two attacks. If no damage is taken for 2 turns, it replenishes itself); (Incineration Ray – guided firebolt which explodes upon impact damaging all units in that area and damaging for other 3 turns. This ability takes 3 turns to be available again. As it is considered an attack from the tech device, cooldown works for both abilities at the same time. It is not possible firing the Incineration Ray and the Cryo Blast in two consecutive turns. One or the other is used, and the cooldown serves for both at once); (Cryo Blast – freezes target in place for 2 turns. Weaker targets get completely frozen, taking more damage from physical attacks. Stronger targets have lowered movement and slowed speed for the duration. This ability takes 3 turns to be available again).

Rachni Soldier  – available at Suen Dwelling. Rachni are sturdy intelligent beasts which work in great coordination by using their unique way to communicate with each other. Given this unique mind setting, they are impossible to be controlled by external forces, because the Rachni Queen, which had her ass saved by Commander Shepard, fully controls them all. As they learned that in Ashan no other creature had toxic cloud ability, they felt thrilled they would be bringing it into battle in their favor. Even so, their deadliest attacks are performed by razor sharp claws and tentacles when they get close to their prey. They are walking short/ranged and melee units.
Abilities (Mind control|Poison immunity); (Toxic Cloud – from a short range, they spit an acid goo that sets off a cloud of toxic gas which damages all living foes around the main target); (Bury – this unit can bury itself, vanishing from battle, being impossible to target while it remains concealed, also being unable to attack).

Rachni Brood Warrior  – upgraded form of Rachni Soldier. Larger and stronger, the Brood Warrior has some biotic powers in addition to its potential killing abilities, helping them stand in better shape against spell casting foes.
Added ability (Biotic Shield – cast upon allied targets on a small area of effect, it’ll cause the next upcoming targeted spell to bounce off. Otherwise, it’ll last 2 turns. When defending against a spell or after that duration, the biotic shield detonates, dealing small magical damage on surrounding foes, also causing a slowing effect for the next turn. Only one shield can be cast and maintained per time per each stack of Brood Warrior).

Geth Hunter – available at Perseus Veil Dwelling. Geths are synthetic beings, now fully aware AIs thanks to Legion’s sacrifice. The only thing they weren’t aware was that they would be going to Ashan. Their consensus decided to enter the Ashan mission, sparing some mobile units for the cause. They are masters in infiltration and capable of closing in enemy back lines to destroy their supporting capabilities.
Abilities (Synthetic); (Energy Shield – shields of the geth blocks a portion of magical damage and also restores the maximum life of the current stack at the end of each turn); (Stealth Cloak – this unit can conceal itself from enemy vision. When breaking the concealment it has a 15% damage bonus).

Geth Prime – upgraded form of Geth Hunter. The Prime are a very strong geth unit, more armored and able to shot a short-range plasma gun from time to time that can cause great ruckus on turtled units, even more when breaking their invisibility.
Added Ability (Plasma Shotgun – powerful short-ranged shot that deals irresistible damage on all targets in an arc-shaped area in front of the Prime, equal to three positions. The main target gets full damage. The two adjacent units get half of the damage).

ELITE UNITS

Yahg – available at Parnack Dwelling. Yahg is a large predator and very capable at adaptation, intelligent but too violent and possessive, the worst kind of partner. That must be why the former Shadow Broker was a Yahg. But Shepard and Liara T’soni taught him better. And now, by using some research data from STG in Sur’kesh, they could contact the Yahg leaders and ‘convince’ them that they could find a good place to colonize and rule: Ashan. Not a second thought given, they started lending their hand to Normandopolis, and they’ll viciously smite down their enemies to bits.
Abilities (Large); (Unstoppable – this vicious creature cannot be stunned, slowed or bound to place); (Crusher – this unit attack has a chance to stun targets for the next turn and has increased damage against constructs).

Formation Broker – upgraded form of Yahg. With quick thinking combined with their predator physiology, they can adapt to almost any hostile situation on the battlefield. Slowly, but steady, they start breaking enemy formations, either offensive or defensive.
Added ability (Quick Adaptation – by using their extremely adaptive capability, Formation Brokers adapt themselves for each damage taken and damage inflicted. Every attack taken from a identified enemy will get less effective the next time. On the other hand, each attack they inflict on a same target will get more effective the next time).

Krogan Soldier – available at Tuchanka Dwelling. The Krogan are masters of battle and they lust for enemy blood charging fearlessly into opposite ranks. By using giant hammers, they break down a targets defense and they can charge to and fro, damaging and pushing aside enemies.
Abilities (Charge – it covers an area of the battlefield by charging and damaging all units in the way. They’ll all be pushed aside if there’s room for it); (Krogan Nutrition Tank – Krogans cannot be spoiled by external factors, so they are completely immune to debuffs); (Bloodlust – they get bonus attack when battles starts to overlong. Also, when there is an expressive difference between allied overall HP and enemy’s, they get a morale boost and even greater attack bonus).

Krogan Battlemaster – upgraded form of Krogan Soldier. Even more dangerous, they now can activate their tech armor and their hammer has a resonating device that cause micro fissures in their targets which debilitate and damage even more if they keep fighting.
Added Abilities (Fortification – it adds an expressive amount of defense for six turns once per battle); (Quake Hammer – when this unit attacks, small fractures are caused in addition to the massive damage. Targets attacked by this hammer will then take small damage for every action taken after that until the end of the battle).

Asari Commando – available at Thessia Dwelling. Asari are powerful biotics and fierce warriors, in spite of their delicate appearance. They can also mate about anything, even Ashanites. No idea if that’s a good thing. Anyway, they are the few units in Normandopolis that can actually fly by controlling biotics and kinetic fields. And using that as an advantage, they can set their projectiles at will or casting barriers. Convincing them to aid in Ashan Mission was a bit tricky. They usually wait things end up in disaster before making a move. But they learned better, and Liara reminded them what happened in Tessia. Besides, many asari want to leave the now falling homeworld, and even Ashan sounds less doom like.
Abilities (Flyer); (Barrier – creates and sustains a barrier on the battlefield. The commando cannot move or act while sustaining the barrier. The barrier is impassable, but can be targeted and destroyed. If not destroyed by the end of the turn, its energy is renewed. The Asari Commando has a cooldown of this ability equally with the time she sustained the last barrier); (Warp – this unit’s ranged attack causes the target to get amplified damage from the next three attacks from any source).

Asari Justicar – upgraded form of Asari Commando. Justicars are the elite form of asari justice. All they follow is the Code. Shepard convinced them that Ashan had many twisted figures that needed dealing with, so they’ll come in full force.
Added Abilities (Embrace Eternity – this unit can completely render another living unit immobile for three turns in exchange for her own capability of moving and acting for the next turn. This conjunction also makes the Justicar weaker and slower for two turns and another conjunction is only possible every 10 turns); (Singularity – Every 6 attacks, a special attack will be released creating a small singularity point, drawing all surrounding targets in. The closer they are, the harder it is to move or take action. Singularity lasts for 2 turns.).

CHAMPION UNITS

Hastatim – available at Palaven Dwelling. Composing a special unit of the Turian Government, a hastatim is specialized in forced pacification, executions. They use a high-tech blade embedded with kinetic fields, enough technology to mess up the insides of any unfortunate target. And they can also throw some impressive grenades just to be sure of the kill.
Abilities (Kinetic Disciple Blade – the attack is a violent and fast attack that unleashes several similar kinetic echoes, each having a chance to deal a separated stance of damage, a fraction of the damage from the stance before); (Lethal Precision – attack never misses and ignores 80% of target’s defense); (Lift Grenade – holding two of these contraptions, hastatim can explode a wide area dealing heavy damage, slowing, pushing away, and, sometimes, even stunning all targets in that area. Effects last 3 turns).

Turian Spectre – upgrade form of Hastatim. In order to clean the name of the turians as spectres after Saren’s betrayal, new elite units are coming around as great officials. Some are lending their help in Ashan. But aside the fact that they are even a bit less armored than a hastatim, they are much faster, much deadlier and now they wield a Kinetic Razor Whip, not a blade, which they inflict heavy damage into enemy ranks, almost unstoppable.
Added Abilities (Kinetic Razor Whip – the attack has the same effect as the blade, but affects all surrounding foes at once, and it ignores retaliation); (Leash – even when things are dire, if an engaging enemy tries to move away or attacks another allied unit, the Turian Spectre will leash his whip at the enemy, holding this one back, forcing the enemy to attack the turian instead. He does that action once per unit engaged in each clash).

Leviathan – available at Despoina Dwelling. After being slapped awake by Commander Shepard into helping the galaxy get rid of the reapers, mainly showing that all the mess was their fault and thus, their duty to clean this mess up, Leviathans started lending their incredible powers to Normandopolis as well to fight off potential reapers in Ashan. Giving they are the apex of evolution, they have no upgrades, unless if one consider hiring a Reaper. Fat chance. And they are much less numerous than their counterparts hastatims. Lucky Ashanites.
Abilities (Giant); (Floater); (Gravity Strike – this units normal ranged attack has no penalties, no way to dodge, to resist, to block and makes the unit slower and cuts movement by half. The effect lasts 3 turns, but is refreshed at each new attack); (Indoctrination – this unit can control an enemy target to do its bidding. Because this is a unique power, indoctrination works on any sort of enemy. The enemy can resist sometimes and only lose the turn instead or resist completely warding off the ability); (Omnipresent – this unit can set sensitive artifacts on the adventure map and can influence wandering neutral units into submission slowly. Neutral units under the effect of these artifacts for long enough can be controlled by the player when facing another flagged hero. If engaging battle against these units, they are likely to join the ranks too); (Telekinetic Revolution – based on the total damage inflicted by both armies, when it reaches a certain threshold, the Leviathan unleashes a wave of distortion upon enemies, damaging them with the same kind of damage dealt by Gravity Strike).

WAR MACHINES

    1. Elcor Tank – Sincerely excited, Elcors simply enjoy blasting things up. They just don’t whoop about that as others would. Their sturdy but slow body is fit to attach a bazooka on their backs, as they usually do back in their homeland Dekuuna. Given that Ashan has a soft gravity, Elcors can really put some heavy war weaponry on themselves, which can be upgraded for many different purposes, genuinely speaking.

    2. Thresher Maw – this huge beast is a spawn of Kalros, originally from Tuchanka. It usually dig its way down the surface, surprising its prey when it erupts bringing down everything it encounters, even a fat juicy Reaper. In Ashan, a smaller and tamed version were brought along to grow familiar in those lands and to eat all indigenous life. By using a resonant device, it can be summoned to take down walls and towers by spiting strong acidic goo, when the Elcon tanks are not enough for the job.

    3. Volus Medical Unit – as Dr. Chakwas is too busy attending the Alliance demands along with other Normandy Crew, a small team of Volus medical units were sent to aid Shepard in his quest in Ashan. Although they look slow and helpless, which they are actually, they use some biotic powers to move fast about the battlefield, healing and aiding injured allies.

That's it. I'm gonna make an MLP faction. YOU FORCED MY HAND, PANDA! DON'T YOU FORGET IT!

seems kinda cool. Not very familiar with ME but i love crossovers so this is cool. Maybe making it a bit easier to read like putting abilities on the next row? different colour helps but is not quite enough.

better, definitely. But in risking sounding like a whiner, forgot to mention that adding lines under names of the abilities should help much more. Right now abilities are somewhat of a mess. A better mess but still a mess ^^'

I mean, i get why but everything is a bit too much of the same. gneeraly feels like soldiers are very powerful. Are they stronger and more expensive than most but also less numerous? still, pretty cool. not familiar with the setting. love to see more crossovers.

You are mainly speaking of visual references, not their abilities or anything else that I did placed some effort to. If I was to take them out from their crude versions, almost all of those would be shooters with rifles with some similar powers. Yet, I designed them differently trying to explore other possibilities. Still, you only paid attention to the looks of them. Rather annoying.

I looked through some abilities and as i said, they seem very powerful. Hadn't read through everything (have now excepting lore and heroes since they don't interest me) yet but initial response was "elitist" hence the question whether they were more expensive and lower in numbers than other factions.

Does Yahg take/deal reduced/increased damage for every consecutive attack, or does the bonus end if it attacks something else?

A lot of active abilities. Would that be unique to this faction or a theme in the proposed game?

Lethal precisions just seems OP, especially considering it's not the only ability. Is there accuracy?

EDIT:
love the rachni. they seem fun

When I was designing the Yahg, I was still torn between the desire to make it all imba-like or rather prune this and that a bit. The initial idea was making him evolve in a way that it ended up impossible to beat. That would a funny sort of imbalance, but I thought some would argue that, then I decided making it a little less imbalanced.

The ability would be small increments upon themselves, and not upon the whole damage inflicted or resisted. Symbolically speaking, assuming that the first attack inflicted or taken by a certain unit would activate the effect (lasting the whole battle, because Yahg wouldn't simply forget how to adapt all of a sudden) of 10% more damage. Each next attack would then increase instances of 2% or something of that sort over the previous result.

Regarding active abilities, I tried to make it a little yet in the lines of known Heroes, at least on a whole. For this faction, it seemed necessary to imply what some of these units do in the ME games, although some are made up as well, while others are just a reference. That's how they would feel diverse. If not, they would all be similar in the looks and in their role.

For Lethal Precision, it was intended to be powerful, given that this champion unit would have less HP and armor than some of the Elite Units, and yet, a bit less numerous as well. So, they are a very lethal offensive unit, but they lack defensive prowess. And there's their counterpart, the Leviathan, who would be a huge thing on the battlefield. If comparing numbers, for every 1 Leviathan, there would be 10 Hastatims.

I could have picked some other different units to compound the line up, but they didn't fit much in a story to be available so readily for hiring. So, I had to peruse a bit upon classes of units available in the Multiplayer as well, because if I didn't, every unit, even the rachni, would be shooters.

For example, the Varren, which is a wolf of sorts, but just an animal.

Or the Klixen, that spits fire, although only a wild enemy as well, not tamed.

And there are the Reaper variances, which are indeed monsters. But following the story that lead the Normandy to Ashan to avoid Reaper variances being made in Ashan, they would be completely out of context.

Varren and klixen seems cool and "wild animals" hasn't been a problem before. Variety and gameplay before lore, mister

Seems like a cool faction gameplay-wise (even with too many actives for my taste). After the explanation Hastarims sound really cool and unique. Would love seeing this for real.

I can change later, if I feel creative enough.

Lore-wise, varren and klexins are even usable, but it felt injustice not having other sentient races available for now. Not to mention others I didn't use, such as the vorcha, batarians, protheans, hanars, and some wild animals such as harvesters, pyjaks and space cows. Hanars are big jelly fishes, which would fit funnily. harvesters are flying beasts, which can have an interesting use as an Elite beast.

Things can change there yet, while I mull over skills and spells and other 'buildings' descriptions.
