Another bump, to post xkcd's most recent comic, which I'll post a link to rather than reproducing here.

Are we really going to continue maintaining the pretense that humans have nothing to do with it?

Taken from some articles my father wrote here and here.

I would like to note that I'm a bit neutral on global warming. The "science" behind it is a lot more twisted than they tell you, but it's for a good cause. Regardless of if the temperature is caused by human CO2 emissions, the environment is being destroyed.

Eh, doesn't really bother me.  There have been what?  14 ice ages or something like that?  It's natural enough.

As to mankind's contribution, again, it does not really bother me too much.  Yeah, it might spell the doom of humanity, but honestly, have you met humanity?  What a bunch of jerks.

I am always amazed by how people can claim that the current rise in temperatures are caused purely by human activities. Basically, it boils down to a handful of questions:

Does human activity influence atmospheric temperatures?
Do natural processes (including those outside the planet in space) influence atmospheric temperatures?
What is the total impact of human activity on atmospheric temperatures?
What is the total impact of natural processes on atmospheric temperatures?

The first two questions can be answered with a "yes". Of course all the chemicals and pollution we're causing as mankind makes a difference.

The second set of two questions is where things become interesting. Together they form the ratio of the two contributing aspects - and as far as I can tell, preciously little is known about the fourth one. Natural processes stretch across millenia and besides some research on the layers of ice on the (Ant) Arctic and Greenland, not much is known about how the conditions were on Earth in those ages long gone. We've only started to keep track of a lot of that stuff in the last century.

As long as nothing can be said about the ratio of human influence versus natural influence, a treaty that says an absolute rise by more 2 degrees must be prohibited is completely void; what it nature itself, outside of our influence, decides to raise it by 3 degrees? Case in point: somewhere in the millenia in the past, palm trees were growing in Scandinavia along the polar circle. It was that warm back then and that was long before humans walked the planet.

But that's not an argument to then just forget about taking care of our environment. As a race, we should become much and much more aware of how the pollution we cause every day eventually ends up at the start of our food chain - and thereby, on our everyday dinner plates. You are what you eat and hence, the pollution will eventually find its way into your body again. If we continue at this rate with the pollution we're causing, the human race will go extinct due to all kinds of "welfare diseases" that will grow more and more rampant as time passes.

If you look at the comic (or other sources), I think its mostly the acceleration of the warming that makes the significance of human impact quite obvious. Also, if I remember correctly, there is a difference between human produced carbon dioxide and nature produced, one of them is lighter, so they can tell how much of the CO2 released is actually caused by humans.

In the long run, I think the most important thing would be to establish an international authority that determines the precautions we should take. Something that really applies its laws, not just some formality organization on paper. It wouldn't mean much if a dozen European countries in the size of Pompeii apply some strict policies but a 2 billion China just do what it wants.

The U.S. and China signed a new pact recently about such precautions but I have no idea what the details are yet. Just saw some headline on a paper a while ago.

I went to a confrence about global warming today, the guy had spent his last ten years or so into studying everything about the phenomenon and the more you learn, the more you ask, the more depressing it becomes. A truckload of indisputable scientific evidence suggest we are on the brink of a sixth mass extinction, wars, famine, massive social conflict which cant be compared to anything civilization faced before awaits us within decades. And all of this is deliberately not prevented, because of the capitalist creed which can be considered “a mania” at this point: Each and every year, maximize profits no matter what. Fossil fuel industry buys out politics, Russia, Norway, Italy, everwhere the system produces the same sell out and the same selective blindness by the masses: They’ll figure something out somehow. Trump administration is especially a disaster though, since Trump, in bed with coal and fuel industry, consistently cancels out even regulations and agreements that had passed in the past and appoints global warming deniers to key positions in crucial institutions. I think, centruies from now, if there are still people around, they may study this case as one of the most fanatical devotions to an ideology, even though we dont percieve it that way now. 1 percent of the world population is deciding our fate, not just our fate, the fate of 97 percent of  the species on this planet and at this point, we dont act much smarter than those dinasours watching that meteor flying through the atmosphere.

Well, 96 percent of the scientists in the related fields say it’s coming, or to be more accurate, that it already started, did you know flying insects decreased by 75 percent in the last 30 years for instance or that in our lifetime, we will witness a blue North Pole in photos taken from space. 96 percent is as firm as a consensus gets in the scientific world, so it’s accurate to call it indisputable. Yet, scientists usually refrain from talking in certainties, so they prefer expressions like “our studies indicate, as far as the research suggests” etc, it’s from the core principle of always leaving room for doubt. So, the conflict you point is mostly a semantic technicality.

I do point a conflict in your semantics, just for trolling. I agree that global warm is driving the world down and will certainly produce major catastrophes, but as often, you point in the wrong direction.

Trump is there for 5 years, possibly 10 and that's a drop in the ocean. On the bigger side, Paris accord did not held China and India - the biggest world polluter, twice as US - accountable until 2030, that's a truckload of indisputable CO2 releases. Then of course consortiums will get richer and richer by exploiting gas and oil, however it is the individual which consumes, asks and pay for them. More people, more global warming, it is as simple as that. Yet I do not see any intelligent demographic politic proposed, especially in Africa where population is expected to double in the next 50 years, but already lacking resources to survive. Of course half of this population is expected to move towards industrialized countries, which means more pollution, and what is done to prevent that? Keep hitting on Trump, is so much simpler and makes us sound as concerned.

I didn’t only hit Trump, I actually said the system was the problem, mentioned a lot of countries. But you must once again come in defense of him even when he is totally undefendable, backing on deals which will result in irreversable and catastrophic results, setting this as an example since U.S. is not any country, plus is the home of many of the international companies which cause the problem. Overpopulation doesnt help but alternative clean energies would significantly make it less of a problem.

Trump may not be responsible for all the problems in the world but he sure deserves to be “hit” like a punching bag more than often. He is as bad as a politician can get. So yes, even if you come in defense of your “anti-immigration hero” every friggin’ time his name gets mentioned in the OSM, extreme majority of sane and educated people will keep on bashing him. And justifiably indeed.

An "educated" person will speak bollocks if he is misinformed, so that remark of yours doesn't impress me. You start by saying there are a lot of causes, then you precisely name one, Trump and his government. Me replying that you point in the wrong direction is not taking Trump defense, especially when I name the causes which, imo, are much more sensible than a couple of political back and forth he did.

But, alas, thats enough for you to start a Trump argument instead of discussing the causes I enumerated. Cheap.

No, you cherry-pick Trump from the post, you dont directly defend him in such a case, of course, because that is almost impossible, but you pull a whataboutism instead, as if, the president of the most powerful country in the world pretending global warming isnt real, backing on international deals, even banning the word climate change is not a significant part of the issue, what was your choice of words, ah yes, “a drop in the ocean.” An extremely toxic drop for sure. Pointing a finger to Trump is anything but “taking the wrong direction” when it comes to this issue and it sure doesnt prevent pointing another one to other aspects. So, for once, dont “what about” when his name gets mentioned, his politics on this issue is a disaster and it is perfectly normal to mention that.
