I'm goin with the tier h4. I think it's fun, but not for long. The restrictive skills, copy/paste line ups, hardly any unique abilities, boring specializations, pointless hero classes and lack of myth units is going to make for little to no replay ability for me.

Those that don't mind the things above will probably love this game.

I can see it becoming very predictable. who will win the battle? Well,  Which hero has the best GM abilities? or which army has the most OP ranged units?

I'm already sick of dungeon and haven for the most part so I really see myself playing the campaigns of the factions I like, a few multiplayer maps, then back to h2/h3 sadly.

But only time will tell if I'm wrong or not. I'm often wrong and it would be nice if this was the case, but right now, the game will at best create a small dedicated Fanbase, as the did its good ancestors. That is what I hope for it.

But why making a small fanbase when a much greater success lies in making a game for generations on?

If that weren't the case, then why was H3 HD version made?

At any rate, even if your arguments are true, then all what is needed is a bit of a groundbreaking - just sponsor the game across the sites. Certainly their marketing isn't poor in that, is it?

All in all, everyone is expecting something to top down H3 (or, at least, H5). What use is it to make a small success, especially if the profits that are brought in are funded for the development of the sequel (or so does H7 seem from H6).

Because, for now, there is no potential for a AC/Batman scale of fanbase? H3 HD was something the current fanbase cried out for for years, and yet if you ask anybody,he will tell you it was a colossal failuer.

We are talking Ubisoft here. A company with one of the worst marketig approaches in the industry.

I won't vote cause I didn't play the game. But judging by the look of things this game will be H6 at most. Maybe a bit better. Which is still not good.

@Dave_Jame

I noticed your post about the state of TBS games. You could be right. There's a trend for more dynamic games nowadays (I don't know, because people live faster and want more action?). But I see one small light at the end of this tunnel. I could be wrong, but I think that because board games are getting more popular (there are becoming less geeky, more mainstream, or being geeky becomes more mainstream?) this could lead to sth. More and more people are getting interested in them (I noticed it with my friends for instance), more board games are getting their virtual counterparts (Talisman, The Witcher Board Game, Battlelore 2ed for instance). And most board games are at least similar-ish to TBS games at heart. Yeah I know their somewhat different things (many geeks say that because they are "board games" not "virtual games" is what makes them unique). But ultimately that can lead to a rise in TBS popularity maybe? We'll have to see...

Fully agree with Galaad.

@Dave_Jame

In 2006 Titan Quest creators went to their publisher (THQ) with an idea to make a commercial MOBA(before LoL, Dota 2, HoN, HotS days) but they got response that they don't think there is much of a market for this type of games. Well look at it now... Minecraft creator didn't think that his game could become so big either so I really don't understand why Homm type game can't shine once again.

Also look at RTS genre. I loved oldschool RTS games(workers that gather resources, small armies). There used to be a lot of them out there - Age of Empires 1/2, Starcraft, Tzar, Warlords Battlecry series, Warcraft series and so on. After Warcraft 3 RTS genre changed(no resource management, huge armies, 5000 units on screen). No one was making oldschool type RTS and then Starcraft 2 came - 12 years after Starcraft 1. Oldschool type RTS without any major changes - still the same 3 races, still 2 resources, still the same gameplay. They even didn't change stats of most of the units. And I don't think anyone can say that Sc2 wasn't successful. You might say well it is Blizzard - that's true but then again do people forget how big Homm series was in Starcraft 1 days? Homm was on top of the world together with titles like Quake 3, Starcraft and Diablo 2. In my country everybody played Homm3 and I'm pretty sure it was the most played game back then.

Even if you think that TBS are dying then why in the past games like Age of Wonders and Disciples were overshadowed by Homm and now I feel like it is the other way around. I feel like AoW 3 is overshadowing Homm series even though Homm once had everything - huge fanbase, established brand and Age of Wonders had to built all of that from scratch. More complex 4X TBS are doing quite well too - Civilization, Endless Legend.

What is hurting Homm series the most iin my opinion is:
1. Developers with 0 experience when it comes to TBS games - even Nival who had experience with Etherlords had to gain some experience before Homm5 finally became really great game wth 2 expansions.
2. Constant developer changes which leads to lack of the clear vision - I feel like every new Homm game is not a sequel but just different take on the same game. There is no improvement but just experimenting with different parts of the game. Didn't work? Ok instead of trying to fix it in the next installment we will go for completely different take on that matter and see how it goes.
3. Trying to innovate by changing things just for the sake for change. A lot of changes feel forced.

@Ankhes
I realy don't want to flood this topic but

A)
Even JVC had an idea for a masive open world online game years before WoW. Beeing ahead of it's time is not as hard as starting a Renessance.

B)
Disciples better then Homam at this time? With the last game beeng III, a game that most likely killed its brand?

C) Starcraft is a well made fun game with a huge fanbase. But I don't see ANY other games in such a scale comming out. Heck EA even killed one of the best TBS brands few years back.

1. My point was that you can't simply state TBS days are over, this genre still has its place and can easily become popular once again.

2. I meant AoW3, Disciples series pretty much went HoMM road with Disciples 3.

3. There is still possibility of it happening. Happened in the past and even though chances are very slim it is not impossible. Unfortunately, with every HoMM title I think fanbase is diminishing and brand itself is slowly getting forgotten. If it is going to happen I'm afraid it is more likely that it will happen via Heroes-like type game started on Kickstarter.

On topic I think it will be something between Homm4 and Homm6. I think quality-wise it will be Homm6 tier but with modding, sim turns and random map generator there is hope that this game will become fairly good.

I would bet a small amount on H5 Tier. It's little to lose, much to gain. Sadly, the odds are looking to something better than H6, possibly better than H4, but a long way off H5.

OTOH Heroes 5 had a lot of issues on day one. Even if H7 on day one is a flop, it still has the potential to evolve and improve with one or two expansion packs.... or at least we hope so......

Not sure why Disciples is always mentioned, it never had the fraction of Heroes' popularity and no Heroes game was as maligned as Disciples 3.

I do think TBS games are obsolete now, like many other genre (point and click adventure games anyone?) and people have to accept that, it has nothing to do with personal tase and preferring those games.

Outdone themselves tier.

All I judge in this game is the multiplayer, normal and duel games, and how fights are. So far, it seems the multiplayer desynch bug is the same as Heroes 6, monsters seems to have a tad less special skills compared to H6, the UI is uglier than H6, the special effects and sounds are snowtier than H6.

To me, this game seems worse than H6, so I had to vote for the only option below H6.

I own the game and anybody thrashing the game to the level of H6 I say two things if they know "something" about strategy/balance/variety;

-Convertable Towns(Yaaay "suppeeer" idea)

-3 Resource kinds(Because "dumbing down" is always funnnnn and what you need in a strategy game!!)

I haven't encountered a game crash yet by the way.

The situation is Heroes 5ish with some +added bonus of map editor -less hero specialty I would put it.So there is great potential to be tapped if you look at the H5 example.

When you pay 50 , you don't pay them for a POTENTIAL game or the potential that may hide in the game - you pay them for what you get, and what you get is what you play, and that's laggy, buggy, and boring.

Considering, it's the 7th entry in the franchise and NOT supposed to be an "it's all new" game, like 4 and probably 6 went out to be as well, but instead a "best of", that is, a smooth, pleasant, just-one-more-turn experience in 3d, it's simply the worst entry in the franchise - like with H6, if the game is really polished in a year, when the first addon will hit the shelf no one will be interested anymore, because the game is way too boring to be played widely in a year's time.

There are virtually no 2 elements in the game that work together in harmony - it's a disjointed, arbitrary gaming experience which means that as a game design it's a failure.

If the brand had been forgotten for 10 years, and now some kickstarter would revive it - even then it wouldn't be acceptable, because I don't see where the game would be better than Heroes 5 or 3 with Wog - or even 4 which is still miles ahead of 6 and 7 - because it doesn't even recreate something successfully (which a best-of would imply).

Now, when I see the ratings where the good ones are all based on the campaigns (not on the art, but on the variety and story-telling), then I wonder whether Ubisoft this time made simply a grab for a good ratings by writing campaigns first and then patching a game around them - which even makes sense considering what your usual game reviewers are testing...

I would say that this is Dishwater tier. It is better then Heroes 6 but mostly because the game doesn't crash all the time like Heroes 6 did(for me it does at least). Gameplay is very shallow and it feels like a low budget title.
Honestly it feels like a slap in the face. I may try the modding tools(If you can even call them that) to try some stuff but I doubt that I will be able to fix an ultimately mishmash/broken game.

Based on steamspy, HoMM 7 has sold roughly 11,500 copies within the first week. According to the old adage that sales numbers are inversely related to the quality of the game, that would put HoMM 7 straight into the "Ha Ha In Your Goddamn Dreams" tier.
