is it too late for animations ?

Hello,

been playing heroes vii since release and ive seen alot of stuff and bugs that i can let go because they are not ruining the experience and because its just a matter of time before they get fixed anyway.

Now, what hurt my experience the most was animations.

i`ll give a small example, the minotaur guard is the same unit basically in heroes vi and vii.

in vi the minotaur guard has a weight when he walks, you can hear the steps and feel its presence. also, when he hits the screen shakes a bit because of the impact and you can really feel the raw power especially with that badass swing critical hit.

now for heroes vii, it doesnt look like he is walking, he is basically floating or gliding. also, when he hits there is absolutely no sound to the impact of the hit! although its the same damn animation but this time without effects and sounds!

of course, there are tons and tons of examples but this one that stood out the most for me.

my question is, what happened? why copy and past the assets and units animations and leave out the effects and sounds?

it really ruins my experience coz im not feeling any unit, and the behemoth pounce, oh please ive never felt so embarrassed for watching an animation like that

animations in heroes vi was the best to be honest especially with effects and hit impacts.

so, is it too late for devs to tweak and improve animation quality? or even bring it back from heroes vi? or thats it and we should swallow this bitter pill ?

It depends on your priorities?

For some people, the game doesn't even launch.

For other people, heroes disappear from the adventure map.

Some other people abhor the cut scenes.

For others, AI is dumb as a rock.

All in all, making the game work for the great majority of the fan base should come before anything regarding unpleasant visuals, such as animations, which are also very difficult to categorize, because animations and how 'cool' they look like are more subjective than 'not being able to play the game', or having dumb AI, you see?

If it's late or not, this is a question with no answer, because they have their hands full right now, and animations seem not to be in their priorities.

For now, I would suggest you to swallow the whole thing.

Fixed that for ya

But the behemoth pounce and the trogs burrow just hurts to watch. And waiting around for the centaurs to finally shoot an arrow kills the better half of my day.

Animation glitches are of course subject to change as they are, in fact, bugs. Actual changes to animation sets (like the Strider, which I personally quite love ) will almost certainly not happen.

Can't animations be done in the downtime? I thought the only reason the "fun" animations exist is because you guys had some free time between tasks.

The hit animations and the getting hit animations really need some impact.

They did it for consistence, since they recycled the models from HVI

They could've just as easily scrapped them tho.

Another one word: So?

How does that stop anything. Besides you still have the models yourselves. All you have to do is edit the movements. Have one of your guys take over this task and only this. If it is needed hire somebody new. Beg Ubi for an extended funding, whatever just do it please. I don't want to see another Black Hole incident.

Btw, which studio is responsible for the new models and animations? The recycled ones were created by Puppetworks Animation Studio but what about the new ones?

Well the animation and sound fx have improved vastly since the 2 betas. However, they are far from satisfying. I would really hope that they are not finished with them, and will continue work/support on them.

Well, I believe that whichever the condition they were in, they signed a contract, which I think they judged it was enough to have this project going. All their responsibility in accepting that. I'm sure that details such as budget didn't come after they knew exactly how much they would have to do everything. Perhaps they got confused when doing those 'funny' animations and made them all over the rest of the animations?

Sucking is subjective. For the case of the Strider, the feedback is polarized. Some love the creepyness, some hate it. Arguing about visuals is a slippery slope. It always comes down to personal preferences. There is no universal truth and in the end, the ones responsible for art have the last say. That does not mean that either you or me agree with it

And I repeat again, any glitches, however, are not a subjective thing. Glitches are mistakes and are subject to be fixed.

Not to criticise you, but more in general: people seem to assume that making an animation sequence takes a lot of time. But do we even have a ballpark figure of how much time and energy (and therefore money) has gone into each animation sequence, be it attack, defense, funny or death?

Excuse me if I can relate with this that far. To me the real slippery slope here is using "subjectivism" to excuse anything bad under the device of preference. Humans are the odd species known to like utter bad things. There's no standard to be found there. You give the example of the strider, which according to what Heroes is supposed to be - mythological and folklore creatures - it's unarguably a BAD addition. It doesn't resonate to the spirit of Heroes, and that's fact. If someone can doublethink his way into not being bothered by them or even liking them, good for him. It doesn't make it any less inappropriate to have them in a Heroes game.

But anyway, we were talking about animations, and as far as that goes, you guys done did it. Most important here due to their presentation value, campaign cutscenes in 3D without ANY animations. Who had the bright idea that the council animated in promotional trailers but NOT in game was the way to go? Are you joking me? Or are you going to mop that under the carpet of subjectivism too? Maybe you've seen how various creatures perform their death animations by simply disappearing? Or how creatures and heroes walk and turn around? Or how they attack the air? Or how high level spells like Implosion do a little puff when they're cast? Give me a break.

You know, I'd personally be fine with the lack of animations in those scenes if the rest of the game was done like that (say, being animated in 2D or making less-fancy units). Then I'd know they wanted to make a retro game, to *really* go back to the roots. This? This all just feels a mishmash, here and there.
