You really have to pick one point and stick to it if you want to maintain solid position about something. It was World War II initially, now it's World War I, next maybe we can go back to the Crimean War and then to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. If the body count is that important for you, disregarding the fact that during WW I about half of the Middle East was the Ottoman Empire, then OK, I agree, your generals fought just as incompetently as many of the other commanders in that war and managed to lose millions from all over the empire and achieved a record which is not yet surpassed. How does that translate to "the Middle East (and the world in general) is becoming more peaceful" however?

First of all, your first two sentences doesn't make any sense at all.

Markkur says:
Quote:
studying WWI and WWI and the build-up to both wars, what has hit me hard in the last  decade is that with the end of WWII, is that the world never went back to true peacetime

AlHazin objects:
Quote:
Actually analysts say the opposite, it is said that the time we're living is the one with the fewer conflicts ever, comparing to the ages before. And that it's just the mediatization that sometimes makes one think that the world is on fire.

You demand to see those analysts, I quote war historian Harari, talking about the already specified post-WW 2 times as more peaceful than before. Supporting the statement above word by word.

You link: List of modern conflicts in the Middle East

I say, it supports what Alhazin suggested in the first place, because WW 1 death toll alone surpasses the whole 20th Century. WW 1 is, as the name clearly suggests, pre- WW 2 times! So, how is that in your book, "it was WW 2 then and it's WW 1 now."

You first asked for an analyst, I quoted you from the book of a war historian with the exact time period: "International wars became rare only after 1945," you said "what numbers," your numbers support the counter argument, and now you say  "You really have to pick one point and stick to it if you want to maintain solid position about something." Having a drink or two... or three?

His wife living to 157 is certainly legend or some translation error of ancient records etc. 120 is rare but quite possible, yet, it's also pretty much the cap, there are "many" people who make it to that age but not even one who can reach 125, when you look at times things are properly documented: List of the verified oldest people

Yes, there might be the chance of a simple scam, or that this is maybe just a myth, translated as an actual fact. I mean, dude.
It's 40 years after Jesus was born, and the news haven't even reached Korea by then. The same happened to us, we haven't heard from them since 1400, right ?

uh, seeing the state of the medicine 2000 years ago, I would divide by 3 all those claims, she probably died at 55 from teeth infection, combined with hemorrhoids, alzheimer and arthritis. And also this is Korea, aren't we used at how they present facts, even today?

Anyway, no one beats Mathusalem and this is a real story!

Maybe. They might say their penis size reaches over 7 inch, when it doesn't exceed 3 inches, lol. So, yeah, they might've exagerated.
They are both members of the loyal family, they ate mostly rice (they still do today, lmao) and fish, and they enjoyed sports and sword fights, so maybe they did reach that old age. They might exagerate as well.

Perhaps 115 Artu, but otherwise I fully agree with your point. Pretty weird to consider that as of now we only know of one person left born before the 20th century.

I were once told for biblical figures one should count years as months and divide by 12, so if e.g. Methuselah was recorded as 960 years old, it'd make him 80 years old. But perhaps it was only an attempt to make the story more plausible.

On the other hand it'd make some of these people very very young: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longevity_myths#Biblical e.g. 120 years becomes 10 years.

It's NORTH Koreea. They live under communism. With rules like not allowed to have any religion, allowed to wear only 1 out of 40 hairstyles and cars only owned by rich people, we can say how many mental issues they have. They even have their own Red Star OS, which replaces our Windows, fearing that spying programs might be installed etc.

Sooooo, yeah, cry or get shot. Easy choice.

I guess that's where the whole problem is because you keep insisting on the body count as a proof of what is more or less "peaceful" which I don't agree with at all. There are more conflicts in certain parts of the world past WW II and less in others. If your indicator what makes the times "peaceful" is how they relate in terms of death toll to the casualties in a conflict of a global scale, then it's a lost cause to keep arguing because we simply haven't had such a conflict after WW II. Taking that further you can argue that the times before WW II were generally peaceful because there was no single conflict with 60+ million deaths in the recorded history, half of them in a single (although quite big) country.

It's not just about numbers, sure, but pre-WW times really are worse in extreme majority of the cases, when you compare in terms of what I already called as intensive wars of massive scale. War is a bolder pattern back then. To put it simply, it is a fact of everyday life in a much more direct way, for so many more people. And it's also harder to avoid it personally, on an individual basis because of very different social norms, laws and means to run away.

True, Methuselah was the oldest human in bible who lived 969 years old. He's name meaned something: "Who's dead brings the flood." There are quite several that lived over 900 years old but Methuselah was the oldest. Offside bible there is a story that Methuselah's father saw a vision that his son dead, will bring the flood. Methuselah was the gradfather of the Noah who was in the ark when the flood started.

Now, bible does not speak much why people lived that long and why people lived shorter life after the flood. Bible just says: Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” I beliave there where greenhouse effect that could have blocked much of the radiation that now hits the earth. That would have resulted in ideal living conditions and long life span.

After the flood there where other races than humans (homo sapiens), bible called them Nephilites the "giants". Now, this sounded ridiculous few decade ago but now we have founded many bones that rises the questions, what where these human alike species. Back on topic. I don't know did they measure time differently back then, only that it may have changed living conditions dramatically. It's much like that indian fellow who lived ~200 years, now we don't have anyway to prove it. There are those even today that claim to be really old and they have lived long part of their life in some jungle. Well, that's not very convincing.

Sorry, about the long text.
