This is a game of hot potato. In my eyes, religious people are immoral.
A christians/muslim/jews life has no value and places no value on life because afterlife exists for them.

Life is completely relative to chiristians.

And I don't think anyone here thinks atheists are the Borg or anything like that.

I don't think another debate thread will calm things, but if you really want to, you can talk about religion in another "Questions" related one, as previously suggested.

I was more curious about just what makes the different denominations stay the way they are, especially Protestant, since I still know far more about the Orthodox and Catholic, being from the Central-Eastern part of Europe.

Just wondering if there are any other Christians that think we should re-invent Christmas? Instead of the usual American-way of people who generally already have too much, buying each other even more "stuff" that they really don't need.

Here's how I would make it if I could; i.e. During the special season of the year, presents/gifts are given in various ways...work, visits, gifts and of course needed money etc. to the poor, homeless, ill, handicapped, prisons, shut-ins and homes for the elderly.

Of course, to follow Christ would mean we would need to extend such thinking to the whole year, much like we should be thankful for every day and not only remember such a notion on Thanksgiving day.

Maybe one day most Christians will practice a glimpse of true heaven and will stop dancing to the adman's-tune.

I think people need to be more thankful and less greedy, on Christmas especially. And we in Europe don't have a day similar to Thanksgiving in the USA, none that I know of.

I also read an interesting article: Jesus is for people who hate Christmas .

Sorry if I got you atheist all wired up. Big problem is that when atheist want's scientific and material facts, religion does not have those answers. They are in different category. What I said about personal experience and supernatural side, you can't really combrehend  spirituality realism before you have experienced it by yourself. I know what emotions music and imagery gives you but spirituality is something totally different.

Artu you had some good points but there are intellectual individuals among the christians aswell Yes, I know it sounds like superstition in this day and era but no materialism can deny that either. How to figure it out? Read the bible, what it says about Jesus, if you don't beliave it, just ignore it. Jesus said if you come to me, you will know if this teaching is from God. The responsibility for you to grasp spirituality comes from God alone and this 'spiritual supernatural event' may happen to even you, altough you're atheist. That's why I like to talk whit everyone of this subject as it has changed my life for the better and little did I know, I needed it. Read the bible and think of it what you will, that's my advice

If one does not accept the validity of the Bible, there is nothing at all to discuss about Christianity as a religion, from my point of view.

And I do not wish to mix it with secularism, either.

I think Christmas was always in a... weird.. state. AFAIK, it was "carefully chosen" to coincide with already existing tradition and as such, hedonistic culture got mixed up with christian values. Which I think made it an easy target for exploit, such as when big companies want you to buy, buy, buy more, for Christmas. I could imagine especially the U.S. being fragile for this sort of corruption as it's a "mess" of different cultures and as such different Christmas tradition that originates from our hedonistic ancestors.

Where I'm from, Christmas is mainly celebrated the "usual" way, if you have children / teenagers, who like the whole celebration deal with the following gifts and the adults like the nice food and the "mixing".. but if you don't, Christmas can often be celebrated like any other holiday, hoping for a nice, good day and otherwise it's nothing special. Sadly it's also a time where people who are alone often can feel very depressed. I guess it's a mix of the lack of sunlight here in the more extreme hemisphere, combined with other people celebrating around you.

That's good idea Markkur I once discussed whit eldery christian about christmas, what did you do... I was whit kids and alot of presents. Then I asked what did He do. He said he was visiting prisoners at christmas eve and later stopped by at the hospital. I tough to myself, this brother is living real christmas. Of course He did not have small kids anymore, but still i think that was great. Oh yeah, one of the inmates said to him, you must really care for us from coming this day

I'm not against christmas (I like presents ) but it is too commercial. Having whole family around spending time together, eating like crazy, yeah that's christmas for me Maybe some christmas, we can say, let's do something different. 2 years ago we had one homeless guy at christmas, he was moved by it. Our non-christian relatives did not very much care for that tough

Now, aim gonna eat meat and drink soda whole xmas

Actually, it's pretty easy to see what makes religion suck: no one would have a problem with it if religious people would be happy to follow their belief INDIVIDUALLY.

But no, they MUST convert and tell everyone else how bad they are, how clueless, what is right, what is wrong, that god wants this, and god wants that, and everyone has to follow ...

Folks, just let the dumb atheists or believers in other gods go to hell. Peacefully.

It's not YOUR stupid war, right? Care for your own soul, live your life and leave everyone else the hell alone.

But no. Doesn't happen. Infidels must be killed or konverted.

Here, it has that plus a lot of "old traditions" specific to our region, and the Balkans.

JollyJoker no one is forcing you to beliave. You can have you own way. God does not require 'this' and 'that' from you, only that you accept His love. You can always walk away..

If we think this Jesus is so amazing, of course we want to share it. Yes, we do it in a wrong ways, many of times (by force, fear..).

"Infidels must be killed or konverted." No! We are all spiritually death, alone, whitout God. Jesus makes you alive, inside. Convertion is individual thing, that you turn towards God, accept His free mercy towards you.

I say it again, God loves atheist and every people on this planet, all He want's is a relationship whit you. If you want to know, just pray: "If you God are existing, help me out to find you." God often 'handels' the rest.

Everyone, you are important. Yes, you are, you might not know it yet

See, there you (Christian) go again, preach this, "share" that", tell people how they are lost or dead, and how God wants a relationship with me and how Jesus loves me ... no matter how you do it, it's always YOU know that GOD wants something.

He might tell me HIMSELF if that's so, and I wouldn't think he needed YOU for that one. So until I have some kind of revelation ...

Seeing how AWFULLY silly people were, when they took dozens of years to work hard and build monumental churches, although times were awful, people were starving and had nothing ... I don't think, I want to live a life dedicated to a myth - if YOU want that FOR YOURSELF, that's fine; I have no problem with people having shrines at home, whether they are dedicated to Jesus, Buddha or Han Solo.
But start to tell me that I should follow your example, and you've lost me; start telling me as a community what I should do or not do, how I should feel about things like abortion, sex outside of marriage, homosexuality or whatever else, because your idol sees it that way, I will have to fight you.

Christianity is an asset-flip. seriously, there's nothing original about it! For example the cross is a repurposed, Egyptian ankh (the historical crosses used to crucify jesus(IF THAT IS YOUR REAL NAME) looked much different) and the Noah story is from Mesopotamia at a much earlier stage.

either way, do what you want. your faith is your own damn business, not anyone else's. I don't want to hear snow about how I live wrong or how I'm a sexual degenerate or whatever. Leave me alone and I'll leave you alone.

Which is also related to why I dislike the two Abrahahimic religions (jews don't have that problem) so much since they're all about getting everyone involved. Especially Christianity and the catholic church in particular which has also perverted the original messages, turning the salvation of sins into a damn business.

You do you, I do me, don't pretend like you know how I should do me. Because you don't. Or what JJ said.

Probably came out as more antagonistic than intended...

JJ there is nothing Jolly about you these days. You've became what you rant about next. And Christ said "where ever two or three are gathered" so this is not a selfish-trip, it is a "learning to be self-less one".

JollyJoker said:

I guess I missed it in this thread? What little bit I've read here about Christ has been from on the defense.

There's another aspect that, at this moment, you cannot know and that's a "part" of the Christian's journey is a mixture of "discovering something is precious + it's been under your feet your whole life + you care about someone else in some fashion". I'm not making excuses for the misguided flamethrower-zealot types (they do more harm than many outside the Church)but my friend there is much more to human beings than only not-so-jolly and not-joking joker's interpretation of human interaction.

As to "others" having spiritual events in life...of course. If God exists, then the part about we all being His means we all are in the family and our bodies work the same. We are spiritual, mental and physical people.

Yeah, I'm big on the idea, however, when it becomes a way of life, it becomes the kiddies-day/ Nothing wrong with that but here in American, children are often made horrible spoiled brats. My own kids were smothered every year (not by me, the only way I could of stopped this crap was by divorcing and wife and all family) and watching them unwrap a present to not really even bother to look at it because they have many more to open...mad me sick.

Poor folks don't run into this problem easily but they too can manage it, if they are ignorant enough. i.e. "Champagne tastes on a water budget" or like buying "have to have" shoes for a one kid that would feed the whole family for a week or more if spent correctly.

Believe me Markkur, your problems are our problems. I had some toys when I was a youngling, but kids today ... they're like little kings, and they won't be so in the real world. And we are a poor country by comparison, second world.

Santa is not real. Parents are.

Hollywood Jesus or the Christmas Spirit may not be true. But the real King of Kings is. That is the essential.

As for the rest who refuse our faith, I turn the other cheek. Don't be hypocrites. If I leave you alone, you please do the same for me.
