And I already asked you why does London have 54 times less gun victims than NY although it has almost the same amount of crime and robberies. Millions of immigrants from everywhere, Irish Mob, Muslim extremists, Hindus, Pakistanis, Eastern Eropeans with mafia connections, drug trade, London has all of those...

The difference is the gun culture and I already said you cant change that only by legal restrictions, you have to deal with the social fabric as well, stop idealizing the cowboy mentality.

And there is a difference between simplifying and oversimplifying, if you want to read actual in-depth stuff, read the research and learn why it isnt as simple as "if one wants to kill himself..." and learn abot how suicidal tendencies are not black and white. It would be a better investment of your time than ranting non-sense in capitilized letters.

Oh, and I already said safe-zones are not the answer and they are like trying to wash away cancer with a soap.

now, did you know that, in new york city, they have highly restrictive gun laws(like the kind people are pushing for in this thread).

Jokes on you, crime is at an all time low in New York. It doesn't reach top 30 cities in murder statistics in USA. New York City's crime rate has fallen to levels not seen since the 1950s.

so it's safe to say, that you don't know how a hoodlum works, internally; because you have never been a part of them, and because you have never been one yourself. so how do you think you can understand the nature of a hoodlum, and consequently, what it takes to protect yourself or your family from one(or more, because they tend to work in groups, specifically)?

and that's not even getting into the darker side of things, artu. there are much worse than simple opportunistic and immoral hoodlums, in the u.s.

are you familiar with street gangs at all? how about the mexican cartels? have any people over THERE that are a part of that?

people who want to commit suicide are going to commit suicide, artu. demonizing HOW they do it, is retarded.

The ease with which you can do it does lower the threshold to really do it, though. A gun is quick, just put it on/in a vital spot and pull the trigger. Cutting your arteries or an overdose, or jumping off of something high all take a bit more effort or time to accomplish and/or time to die. I can see artu's point on this particular aspect, how guns do increase suicide rates.

As for the general topic at hand: the main source of the arguments and counter-arguments are simply the fact that we all originate from different backgrounds and are used to different social structures in our everyday lives.

For me personally, the idea of holding a loaded weapon (with live ammo) seems ... awkward, if not even a bit terrifying, as pulling the trigger can mean serious harm to another individual - regardless of whether it's justified or not. My personal experience is restricted to firing an airgun at a shooting range once as a young teenager; while funny to do, it didn't really appeal to me in a broader sense. But then again, we have a very strict gun law here in the Netherlands and when I walk down the street, I have (very near-) zero fear of anyone else just going berserk, pulling a gun and starting a killing spree.

On the other hand, I can understand that a society which has rather deep trust issues with itself, coupled with a liberal gun law has lead to a poisonous social brew where you might actually need a gun to have the (maybe false) sense of security that when something bad happens, you can act against it. Many people might not hold on to a gun out of status or prestige, but more out of fear. Fear will untimately backfire, though. But the only way out of such a mess that I see is if the nation as a whole starts working on those trust issues - and that's not something I see happen anytime soon. What I do know, however, is that piling even more guns into the equation to level the playing field will not do much to alleviate the trust issues, but rather the opposite.

@ maurice: as i've said, gun owners aren't afraid, and they don't have to be; because they're armed. people who know what there is out there to deal with, WOULD be, if they were unarmed. they'd find it hard to sleep at night, actually.

which is why certain people here in the states want them gone. because they don't own any, and are AFRAID of what might happen to them.

This is a xenophobic generalization, using mongoloid with such pejorative connotation is actually beyond xenophobic but we go back a long way so I'll just leave it at that.

No, the pejorative meaning of "mongoloid" is retarded, and was not used as defining a race, a nationality or a religion, but a group of people which were caught in fraud then kept denying it - I was talking about a specific video that you could have asked the link then make your final opinion.

I'm disappointed how you guys both declined to such stereotypical snowflakes and became incapable of sharing ideas without using personal attacks. Since the beginning of this discussion, I had to handle with "those who believe this are moronic", "your mental capacities are affected", now "xenophobic", "hateful", "obsessed" while nothing in my comments was toward you, being civilized is too hard maybe?

Just because you two are the bland echo of the most conventional and biased medias - who just can't admit they failed at everything - does not give you some sort of free pass where you can invective the other as much as you like then have him still willing to continue. I am not,  but is not like I care anymore about, when you need to mix contempt to your opinions to pass, you reduce your audience to your alike, the uneducated.

Some interesting news on BBC.
Dicks Sporting Goods backs common sense gun reform

The retailer, which has more than 600 shops, said it was committing itself to:

- No longer selling assault-style rifles
- Banning the sale of high-capacity magazines that allow more shots to be fired without reloading
- Not selling firearms to anyone under the age of 21

Sadly the corporations need to show the lead when politicians do nothing.

@fred

I did answer to your valid questions, which you replied "blah blah." However,"if you havent been in a hoodlum, you cant know" is a too non-sensical argument to reply seriously and if you cant see that, I'm not a magician who can make you see. Besides, I'm really tired (as in starting to get sleepy), so, you just keep on believing what you believe.

@Sal

I read all kinds of media, and not everything you disagree with is leftist propoganda. And I didnt attack you personally either, just evaluated your statements. I dont think you realize how obsessed you really sound about this immigration issue, which btw, I'm not in perfect sync with liberals either. But you take your reaction to a level of animosity whether you are aware of it or not.

I see that as quite the contrary . They are afraid something might happen, hence they bought a gun.

The crux here is that no one should be so afraid that they feel the need to have a gun at hand. Which brings me back to the trust issues that are prevalent in American society.
