HoMM3 HD Mod's question

HD mod only changed world map screen, combat screen is a square window, looks odd.

Can this be changed? Any settings about combat window's size or resolution?

I just want the combat screen be wildscreen, not square.

No, you can't change that. Is a bit frustrating for a while, then you eventually will find it natural, like all others.

If can't change combat screen's resolution, at least give a setting which makes combat use full screen instead of window. Currently the square window is so ...

So you want an option to be able to stretch the combat screen to full screen? The price of during so would obviously be that you'd mess up the aspect completely. The only way of achieving this currently would probably be to run the game at an 4:3 resolution and then stretch the whole game with either your GPU or your monitor. But I wouldn't recommend it.

The problem with the HD version's implementation is that borders makes you feel visually restricted, even claustrophobic in a sense. The way that Baratorch's HD mod deal with this makes a lot more sense to me sense since you can see the adventure map underneath which feels visually 'open'.

No, it has nothing to do with border or full screen.

I just want a rectangle, not a square. Because computer screen is not a square, currently the battlefield and models in square window give me a "squeezed" feeling.

So, what should go in the extra space when you move to a rectangle? As said, with the current window, you'd stretch all the graphics if you want to restrict yourself to that. Apparently you don't, judging by your answer, so the other question is: what should go in the extra space?

No, i just mean: Rectangle window looks better than square.

Currently the best solution is: combat screen resolution setting possible. seems no such function

Original Homm3's screen is not a square when played on a computer.

Um... it's a rectangle, not a square. Pretty sure it's 4:3, same aspect ratio as the original.

Oh, I was like you, I played the game with streched graphics for a few years believing they were the actual aspect ratio. When I switched from XP to 7, everything felt squeezed. Trying to find a solution and not realizing why people dont get my problem on forums, I was finally convinced the "squeezed" graphics were actually the real deal when someone posted me screenshots from the game's printed, official manual.

Dont know why but some computers have that stretched ratio on some settings and they can seem like the actual ratio if you are used to it. Give the "squeezed" ratio a week to get used to, you'll see it's actually much better and it's the originally intented ratio.

The old days H3 only can run in full screen, even can't switch to window mode. Game displayed on computer as a rectangle and looks good. Now HD mod restore it to square, looks realy terrible, i can't like it.

The possibility of switching Heroes III from fullscreen to window by pressing F4 ingame (in case of 16-bit color desktop mode) has existed since the release of the game in February 1999. What are you talking about?

Pardon me, but it seems you don't fully understand the technicality about how games are displayed on your monitor. And secondly, 'HD mod' actually refers to Baratorch HD mod, not to be confused with Ubisoft's 'HD Edition'.

Again, if either your GPU or monitor stretches non-native aspects to match your monitor's native aspect then this is the reason why running the original HMM3 fills out your entire screen (without borders). HMM3 runs at 800x600. A 4:3 aspect.

Ubisoft's HD Edition probably runs at you desktop resolution and scales the internal graphics accordingly. There's no stretching done here, unless you for example set a 4:3 resolution on your desktop, though, the game itself wont do any stretching by itself, mind you. So, again, if you want to run the HD Edition stretched to fullscreen on your widescreen monitor then try changing your desktop resolution, if that's the result you truly desire.

Currently, i know there's no setting and can't do anything to change, this information is enough.

Thx everybody.

I seriously still don't understand what you're trying to ask. People have asked questions in reply to yours to get more clarity, but you're not very forthcoming with more detailed explanations as to what you really want. You only brush off the questions instead. How can we help you if you can't tell us what it is you're actually looking for? Your initial question simply isn't clear.

Basically, to get rid of the borders (the brown banners on the right and left side of the screen), you either need to replace it with something else:

The question is: replace it with what?
Do you want to extend the battlefield on either side by drawing it in those areas too, even if you can't ever reach those parts?
Do you want to see the adventure map on either side, as if the battlefield map is an overlay?
Do you want to see your desktop on either side?
Something else?

Or you need to stretch what you already have:

In my opinion, this looks horrible, so realistically, it's only the first option. It's just not clear to anyone here in this topic what you want to see on your monitor in the questionmarked areas.

By the way, the actual frame holding the battlefield overview isn't a square, it's a rectangle. On a resolution of 1920x1080, the actual battlefield without the UI has a dimension of 1440x1000. With the UI elements at the bottom, it's of course 1440x1080.

So simple question and so easy to understand. Actually i'm explaining all the time on every posts except Salamandre's reply. No one's talking HD Mod.

Read my third reply, i said so clearly then you ask me again. Any value for futher discuss?

Maurice, i dont like a square or a "more like square" combat screen. At first, i found no options or settings about custum combat screen window. So post here and want to know other's experience. Then i found exactly this mod has no such function. Then this question is not a scope players can talk any more.

And again you brush off my questions about it.

The only thing I'm gathering now is that you simply want a larger battlefield, but I am not sure if you really mean that as it's not clear.

The default battlefield ingame has 15 hexagons on a line, 11 lines in total. Am I understanding you correctly then than you want something like 21 x 11 hexagons instead? So that it better covers the full width of the monitor? Like this:

I hope you do realise that such a setup alters the way battles are fought, due to when creatures can reach the other side of the battlefield. It changes the fundamental dynamic of the battles being fought.

If not, then I am giving up on understanding what you mean.

I don't understand what he means either. All I know is it looks horrible when stretched out like that.

A bigger battlefield could perhaps be interesting, but it would change the gameplay big time and I don't know if it would be for the better.
