Ah. Well, since I don't know your Intelligence, I can't say if mine is higher . What level is it at? Basic, Advanced or Expert?

Such tests are hard to run because, depending on the difficulty level, AI will recruit more or no heroes at all. Then it depends also on map, immediate threats, monsters strength and probably other factors we don't know.

I had such test run 20 times within same results, then when I was ready to shout "this is the truth", AI did a different move.

I think there is a patern to this and it introduces (again) AI deliberate limitations, even at impossible level. In the map I'm making you get View Air from a shirine three days away from starting town. I use it often. Playing against 7 allied, I'm giving each one, one modified staring hero plus other 4 (or more) in prisons near by. While some of them free all 4 heroes most of them don't free more them 2 and one will not free anyone. While castle and necropolis seam to be more frequently the one freeing several heroes they have all been in both rolls from time to time.
I think that while it is said AI will hire more heroes at hardest difficulties they still forced it not to pursue more then a certain army power (all these heroes are prim wise above level 30).

One thing I've been noticing and I think it should be the opposite is how artifacts are better then powerups and these are better then leveling up, prim wise.
At least in WoG with henchmen, commander artifacts and mods like Usain-Bolt one hero value is rewarded differently then being the lucky guy who got a helmet, a shiled and a black orb from the first tope he took, as it just happened to me right now.

On the subject of A.I, are there any improved A.I profile mods?

I'm getting a bit annoyed at the stupid things A.I (both enemy and ally) do. Like retreating after casting Magic Arrow even if they could put a good dent in my troops by fighting a bit longer and blocking pathways and wasting a turn. By far the worst is when they get spooked by a strong hero and run away, then end up blocking another of their heroes in, so they just sit stuck in the passageway unable to pass each other until I kill them or move away.

I'm aware there are A.I mods for WOG, but I'm sticking to HotA at the moment, are A.I mods possible for the base game??

What you ask is impossible with HotA and only slightly more possible with ERA. You can give them spells, skills and specialties but AI will behave stupidly any how. As far as I know the only project that has a scope so wide it may involve that is VCMI but I doubt most of it is done yet.

I really recommend playing the game without Town Portal, it will make the game harder. As a bonus it makes skills like Intelligence, Mysticism, Scholar and Eagle Eye more important.
But the problem with ai hit and run is always there and it will often waste a lot of units doing that, I guess it's terrified of losing a hero.

If you're playing a custom map I see several ways to avoid that.
The easiest one is to put an event somewhere, say it triggers everytime and make it give a pair of shackles. But then make the compromise of never take them out.

Shackles also makes the game too easy imo, but it is a way to prevent hit and run.

Yeah, they make the game easier BECAUSE they prevent hit and run.
Sal is right about you, you just want to complain. If you want to prevent hit and run use shackles, if you won't don't use them but stop complainning cause this one can't have it both ways.

I like maps where you got to achieve a goal before X amount of days has passed.

I can't imagine such a map wiothout town portal

I'm not complaining, I'm just saying I prefer the game without Shackles and Town Portal, makes it harder and more interesting.

Okay another example of a not too bright ai:
I just found a pair of free Angel Wings on a map. I know it was guarded by level 7 units and ai has defeated them, but for some reason it left the Angel Wings behind! I don't complain about a pair of free Angel Wings, but why would it ever leave them behind?

Cause it has the backpack full so can't pick it, dough . Fortunatly it has that safety-guard, imagine if artifacts, namelly quest ones, felt in to oblivion when heroes have no place in backpack, like it happens when you take a tope with the backpack full.

I told you this before, you have to stop thinking like AI is a human being. It is coded objective after objective, it will not test the backback before doing a battle (it's not the objective) but it may not waste movement trying to pick it if backpack is full.

Yes I know the ai is'nt thinking. (Do I have to post that every time?) But then let's call it dumb coding, for leaving a relic behind.
