No, don't. Ever. Do. The. Update.
Or you will find yourself upgrading back to Win 7 later.

That is Microsoft's aggressive policy, you can disable it by following these steps I guess: http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-stop-windows-10-upgrade-downloading-your-system, or here https://techjourney.net/disable-remove-get-windows-10-upgrade-reservation-notification-system-tray-icon/.

I suggest you read some documentation, here is one of first links from a quick google search: http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2015/07/29/wind-nos/. As an example:

Quote:
We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.

I don't know if you are fine by this, but Win 7 works perfectly well on any system (even laptops shipping with secure-boots), so unless you have an actual reason to go Win10 I highly recommend you stick with 7, the latest good Windows and the best to date from Microsoft IMO

Let alone privacy issues, Win10 has been reported by countless users as non-stable, with slowdowns, automatic updates you never ask for thus you need to wait when you computer boots up, intrusive ads in the freaking start menu etc. Just check some users reviews, again, 2 seconds google give this: http://windows-10.en.softonic.com/comments, or this: http://www.cnet.com/products/microsoft-windows-10/user-reviews/

Avoid the trouble, Win 7 is stable and neat, a good anti-virus is all you need.

If your computer is old, I would stick with Windows 7. If it's relatively new, Windows 10 isn't bad. You get used to it eventually. It's certainly better than Windows 8.

If it's relatively new you keep Windows 7. My laptop is from 2015 and I have a partition for Win 7, everything works just great. The "your hardware is new so you must have Windows 10" argument is BS you shouldn't trust.

My hardware is about 4 years old, personal build. I will probably start updating the hardware later this year, but actually I haven't felt a need yet. Computer runs smooth as butter still.

I like Windows 7, but thought I'd solicit some opinions from others. I have read professional reviews but trust you guys more.

I have Windows 10 and it took some setting up to get it to an acceptable state, but it's fine now. It boots faster than 7 did, which is a plus. I've also heard that Windows 8 had some improvements on SSDs, which presumably carry into 10, so it may be worth upgrading for that.

Yeah sure, nevermind the spyware and overall mess but you gain a few seconds at boot, really worth it.

Ps. SSDs have nothing to do with the OS you're using.

Windows 7 is currently at the state of Windows XP a decade back - the only acceptable Windows available. For me it makes no sense to "upgrade" when the current best Microsoft OS works just fine and you don't really know how many legitimate Trojans you install along with the "free" upgrade.

I love my Windows 10. When that's said, I also loved Windows 7. But my old PC had completely ****ed-up it's W7 and when I tried to re-install W7, it failed when upgrading and went back to crashing all the time. Now I run W10 and everything runs perfectly.

My laptop was Windows 8 and I hate W8 with a vengeance, so if you have W8, don't hesitate for a moment to upgrade to W10.

I was asking myself the same question about their free upgrade to Windows 10, and it seems I was right to hesitate. I'll stick to Windows 7 then.

When I get a new PC it will probably be unavoidable anyway.

Windows 7 is more or less dead and will not support new DirectX, either.

I'd grab Win10, because it is supposed to be (for now, at least) the last Windows. Getting it for free may mean getting an up-to-date system for a couple years at least.

I think Galaad does raise a good point about built-in tracking, but there are multiple ways to disable Win10 connecting to telemetry servers. it won't change the way Win10 works, but will remove the "spyware within", or at least neutralize it. If you're actually bothered by that.

Stability issues are almost always caused by users upgrading old devices. Always do a clean install of Windows 10, don't upgrade, because it's an imperfect procedure that may end up with you having BSODs from time to time afterwards.

Win10, contrary to what Galaad implies, is MUCH faster than Win7, and boots up around 3-4 times faster than Win7 on my rig.

He did not imply that at all tho. And I agree with him actually, Win10 intrusive policies are not worth the faster start-up. If you have no regards for privacy then be my guest. I on the other hand don't wanna be an open book to the feds or the highest corporate bidder or anyone else for that matter. I'm not a number on someone's statistics or entry history, I'm a real human being. If you want to know more about me than I let through then you'd better meet me, not spy me.

Nothing currently makes it "dead" and new DirectX support or lack of such will have some visible impact after years except if you are graphics junkie who gets every new interactive eye-candy on the market. It WILL die at some point like any aging OS but that won't happen overnight, nor it has to.

The faster boot up time with Win8, Win10 is about the only thing that I have noticed which is truly better compared to Win7. But it's a big plus for sure.

However, Win 7 has much better support for older games made before 2000, so if that's important I'd stick to Win7.

If I were ever to have enough reasons to use Win10 then I'd take my time to remove as much of the malicious code that Microsoft has implanted that's not beneficial to the end user. However, I don't think we can ever remove all of the code that's spying on us, just the most obvious code. I'd also install Classic Shell simply because I don't like the tiles. Even if you like them, they're basically ads boxes before you configure them yourself.

Another worrying thing about Win10 is that you cannot disable automatic updating. You can only postpone it. Well, you can disable it group policy, I heard, but at some point you might not even be able to do that any more. Who knows.

Windows 10 is too new, we need to wait for it to stabilize, and it's not even guaranteed to be a good system.
Windows 8 is just totally gay.

I used XP, 7, 8.1(only used 8 for a short while), 10 all extensively, and I personally prefer 8.1. Reason? No Windows(excluding 10) has the easiness of troubleshooting when your PC won't boot or you can't go past login screen. Although 7 is a winner too, but I'm part of the 0.0000000001% of the users who prefer 8.1, the performance is also nice to have(boots in like 10 seconds, faster than 10 for some reason).

There's also a very annoying bug each time an update gets installed(a by-product of not having to reboot when you install updates, from my guess), which is that the start menu(or for that matter, the whole explorer.exe process(btw, it's the one for the menus and stuff. there is another explorer.exe for browsing files, but that's seperate, but it has the same process name) won't work, along with Cortana(which I believe is a part of it) and your sound drivers.

And I will vouch for how annoying that occurrance is when you are playing a game, especially an online one.

Now, here's more about this bug: the ONE AND ONLY solution is to restart. Due to the way shutting down is done in windows 10, a shut down will not resolve the problem, neither will signing off(which is proposed by the prompt titled "Critical error" notifying you about this anomaly, and by the way, this prompt only actually shows up if you signed out/shut down then went back, and not when the error happens in real-time).

Why is the shut down function implemented, in, say, a weird way you may ask? To make Windows shut down faster, which, in my opinion, is kind of stupid, since you just shut it down and walk away. But, to be precise, it acts a bit similar to the "Hibernate" function familiar to Windows 7 users.

Basically, don't. Upgrade to 7 or 8.1(the original 8 sucks by the way) and leave it that. I used 10 a lot, and I know that it really is inferior to 7 and 8.1.

Also, the other downside to Windows 10 is the beyond-CIA-level of invasive privacy policy. Although I personally never did mind, because I never kept stuff I didn't want people to see. For that, I either kept a physical copy or didn't keep any at all(well technically, there's always one in my memory )

Also, if you(by you I'm not talking to thread-maker anymore, talking to people who "upgraded" to Windows 10) still  did upgrade, setting your connection to Metered will drastically reduce the amount of "stealth-updates".

Spoiler: DirectX 12 is only a performance update. It does not improve graphics or anything.

I agree.

Anyway, I see so many people care about fast boot or just a fast OS, well my primary OS is Debian Linux and I can tell you the boot time beats Win10 easily, it's super fast, it's stable, there is support for old games with lgogdownloader and playonlinux (a user-friendly wine), it's free, there is no virus, nothing is more stable. Oh, more and more games have Linux support nowadays btw, AoW3 in example works on it, Witcher 2 works on it, Witcher 3 is TBA I think.

I also have Win 7 on my partition living alongside it that I use for some other games and a few Windows-exclusive softwares I still use from time to time.

With all due respect I think anyone being okay with Microsoft's policy should seriously reconsider their POV.

MS has done nothing with any new OS but steadily move to complete Command and Control of Consumer PCs. If the above is true there can be no clearer example.

And Ads at start-up on my own PC? Wow, you 10 users must be rolling in cash and love buying something every few seconds to accept such invasion.

I have win 7 only because my XP burned and how many years now it still has CRITICAL UPDATE. Yeah and that's why with every one, more ADS work. And...Critical for Steam?...yes.

Microsoft desires to be the next Wal-Mart...of the Inter->net. Doesn't actually make anything but controls everything...including all actions on your PC. It's in the billion word fine print.

In the near future: Instead of HC's "get some sleep" the PC user will hear "Your bank account is out of cash...get some cash...fast or your PC will self-destruct at a convenient time of our choosing"<g>
