Improved Sanctuary

Introduction: Sanctuary is probably my favorite faction. Although it was added late and in the most hated "heroes" game, I do believe it could possibly add to a bigger diversity in themes and gameplay. Therefor I decided to create my own version based of the original Sanctuary from heroes 6 together with some new concepts and ideas. Primarily I will develop it toward an ocean based faction with major influence from Japanese culture and history.

Themes: Honor, balance, Water

Lore: WIP

Design: The faction is native to tropical coasts and islands.

Gameplay: WIP

Units:
Note that I will be using the system proposed by Articun and Minastir

Tier 1.
Kappa
Kurage

Tier 2.

Tier 3.
Mishibishiw

Tier 4.
Mermaid
Nereid

Tier 5.
Karkinos

Tier 6.
Naga

Tier 7.
Dragon king
Coral golem

Before anybody mentions it, I know that it does appear to be very similar to the "current" sanctuary faction, but remember it's still work in progress

Naga? Dragon King?

You probably forget Mermaid and a water-hating Kitsune.

You know, the only creatures I have is the most basic and a single new idea. You could come with some constructive ideas instead of just bashing everything I do.

I will just say that i cannot help before Minastir and I publish our own Sanctuary/Abyss/Reef or whatever we are gonna call it because we are also going for a more oceanic look to it.

Doesn't matter, I'll do fine myself. Although I hope some of my ideas can be of inspiration to you though.

(you misspelled "improved")

Ok, seriously though, for now it feels a bit too H6. Like, full ocean, very east-asian (except the mermaid I guess but all I can think of is H6 mermaid anyway so it still stands). I 'm not really a fan of that sanctuary since i feel the continuous tries from you to recreate or reinvent it to be detrimental to your stuff in general and I quite like your stuff

I dunno, I'll wait and see. So far it doesn't really strike me as very new or exciting is all. I'll keep an eye on it though.

Edit: with the creatures now mostly in I can say that I like that. Especially intersted in the" dragon king". Theme of "honour and balance" with the tropical island stuff still feel like not enough change but whatever, you got my attention.

I'm really torn on a Water-based town, but my obvious choices linger among the following mythological monsters.

The obvious choices: Kappa, Siren

Now it starts to get less obvious.

Santelmo, much like a oceanic, less evil variant of the Will o Wisp, they lure ships to their doom or sometimes help a ship through thick fog.

Shellycoat come from scottish mythology, they live on beaches or near streams, everywhere their shells can be found. They create shell-like golems to be their guardians and practice magic. They are much like sea/water bogeymen that aren't all evil more neutral, they dress themselves in shells and use big variants as suitable shields and weapons, much cool stuff can be done with shellycoats. (they also live in giant shells.)
Sorry for the black/white picture, but people aren't fond of drawing this awesome monster, they rather draw like 10.000 uninspired werewolves.

Shen, the illusion dragon from China. These water dragons are sometimes gentle and sometimes evil, they are said to be giant clams that cast illusions of great dragons, but at other time look like many chinese dragons and have powers over illusions, great for high end use.

Kurage-no-hinotama, or just Kurage to make it somewhat less impossible to pronounce are Jellyfish like creatures made from fire. They can swim in lava, water and in air and are as beautiful as they are deadly. I love the thought of land-flying jellyfish creatures.

Mishibizhiw or the Underwater Panther is an awesome Native American myth about a panther that lives underwater, in other myths there are also underwater tigers named Lenapizka and underwater lions named orobon. Their looks are enough for me, they don't even need special powers to be cool.

Nguruvilu, the water fox-snake from Chilean myths, these create whirlpools and are an agressive lot, but in HOMM they can be tamed maybe and also slither on land, they can be switched with Mishibizhiw.

Heikegani or the Samurai Crab, these tortured beings are the souls of suicidal samurai who possessed crabs, now their tortured faces decorate the shells of the crabs and the samurai's angry and lonely spirit slashes at anyone who comes near the crabs.

This can be turned in quite a cool unit, there is a chance that a spirit samurai slashes the attacker of the heikegani for example, giving both a cool ability and a cool visual.

Adaro, these could be just like the Sharkmen from previous homm-games, but I like the name Adaro more as they are from myth, they use poisonous starfish and flying fish as ranged weapons, how cool is that?

Undine are Water Elementals taking the form of pretty ladies, I'd rather see this than a Mermaid, but then again I hate mermaids.

Pua Tu Tahi is a cool sea demon, but I would call them Coral Golems in HOMM.

I'm sick and tired of Iron and Stone Golems so a original Coral Golem is always awesome, their sharpness makes for great retaliation defense and their colors shine on screen.

Others are:

Tritons, which are scaled sea giants which fight with triton weapons.

Nargun/Planctae, which are crab-like stone golems which crush other creatures.

Rakshasa, thank you. While some of those ideas are meh, there are those I agree could be really awesome! (flying jellyfish and coral golems..? I'm in!)
Although, mermaids are among my favorite fantasy creatures, so they will stay no matter what. Beside, initially have enough female creatures for now anyway. BTW, any thoughts on tiers..?

I mostly post this for everyone that wants to do a water-based town in the future. So you don't have to like all of it.

Tiers could be

Low tier: Kappa, Santelmo, Undine, Kurage, Mishibishiw, Coral Golem (Small), Shellycoat (warrior), Heikegani/karkinos

Mid tier: Coral Golem (normal variant, normal size), Mishibizhiw, Nguruvilu, Heikegani/Karkinos, Kurage, Shellycoat (mage, spellcaster), Adaro

Hight tier: Shen, Coral Golem (enormous living reef), Triton, Orobon or Sea Lion, Nargun

The real problem with water-based creatures is that the best and coolest ones are eighter VERY evil or VERY unable to move on land.

My favorite mythological water creatures can't live on land: Cecaelia the octopus-mermaids, Scylla, Charybdis, Caspilly, Hrokkall, the Icelandic Evil Whales, Echeneis with their time-controlling powers, Sazae-Oni, Abaia, Stella (burning fire starfish), Bakunawa the Shadow Sea Serpent and many more don't have the ability to move on land, so using them is impossible.

Actually, in theory I could add the cecaelia since they shouldn't be a bigger problem than the mermaids. In same way the Sazae-Oni and Scylla shouldn't be a problem either.
Also, really love the idea of a giant moving reef...

Well then you love the Zaratan/Aspidochelone, which are turtles/fish/whales/crabs with small islands on their back, a bit too big for HOMM in my opinion.

I turned the Zaratan into a different creature in my own project, one Coastal Zaratan with a reef/beach on its shell, one Bog Zaratan which is a Snapping Alligator Turtle with a rocky/tree island on its back, and a Oasis Zaratan which has a small Oasis on its shell luring thirsty creature toward their doom.

Also Sazae-Oni is a very evil and vile creature, putting it in a town with gentle mermaids doesn't make sense, so I left it out of my list, I think it is a bit too bizarre to be in a HOMM game as well, I don't think the people that create HOMM can do a good thing with Sazae-Oni.

Well I agree with the Sazae-Oni thing. Both the evil thang and I'm confused of how to make head and tail of them. None the matter anyway.

Also, I do like the idea of the Zaratan. BTW, mind if I burrow the idea of the coastal zaratan for something else..?

Nope, all my ideas and thought are without copyright, the more it spreads over the internet the happier i'll become.

This is my favorite Sazae-Oni design and something like that I use for my own game, but in HOMM I don't see it happen anytime soon, rather see the other Mythological Slug in HOMM, the Lou Carcolh.

Knuckers are small (but long) water drakes that live in water holes and caves, they are extremely fast and hard to hit because they never stand still, they are very hyper in behavior, giving other creatures the nerves. They have frills like Frilled Lizards they use to confuse their attacks.

The similar Drac is also a drake (small wingless dragon) that lives in water, it uses greed (in the form of treasure illusions) to lure prey to the edge of the water, their frills are made from kelp.

Kelpie is another creature that suits in a water-based town.

And the Agloolik are Inuit helpfull spirits appearing much like humanoid seals, they help people catch more fish.

Also I think Mermaid should be Level 1 units, Kappa and especially mishibizhiw are 10.000 as strong as a mermaid, which lower with zombies as weakest mythological creatures of all time. Even carbuncles, baku and leprechauns can easily beat a mermaid to the pulp they deserve to be.

That only makes sense if you go by the logic that mermaids are helpless little girls. Guess what, freaking magic! They are a magical ranged unit capable of casting a hypnosis spell upon attacking. That places them way up in the mid tier.
All your doing is a useless attemp on downgrading a unit you have yourself admitly said you dislike. Sorry I guess.

Mermaids are the happy little helpless girls.

You are after Siyokoy, Sirens, Adaro and other such evil hostile mermen, those are high level, mermaids are the combined name of the group and the weakest link of all.
