Grim dawn

Well, after years of development, it has been released a couple days ago. I've already clocked 80 hours playing this game and I have to say that if you like mindless aRPGs and Path of Exile is not for you (for various reasons - I don't like it myself), you should try this one.

Essentially it's Titan Quest 2.0 with some necessary improvements. The mechanics stayed largely the same but the game no longer feels like mass murder of helpless mobs (that gets insanely boring after a while). it's more akin to PoE in terms of combat scale and speed now, which is a change for the better.

Recommended.

Is it any different from the other "click them all" ARPGs around? I mean, is there anything else to do apart from mindlessly clicking on monsters of all sizes and hopefully enjoying the animations?

Seems something on the lines of Divinity Original Sin. Unfortunately I really don't have the time to play such extensive games at the moment. I would've given it a try otherwise.

Its not at all like Divinity Original Sin. This is a standard diablo like game, with very little rpg elements (when it comes to interaction to NPCs).

But still its very good game. I did not have time to play it that much after the release, as at the moment the new path of exile expansion is out, so it consumed me totally. But after I get bored of it, will get back to grim dawn

I have had it for quite some time and love it.  The atmosphere is great, the action is a blast, and the skill system is excellent.  I strongly recommend it to fans of Diablo 2 and Titan Quest.

For comparisons sake (because it is always compared), I enjoy it more than Path of Exile and Diablo 3.  You can actually see more than 10' in front of you (unlike Path of Exile) and there are also meaningful choices when it comes to class builds (unlike Diablo 3).

So more like hack and slash? Man, I really tried liking Diablo but it just didn't connect with me.

Very much so.  If you are looking for an RPG with a lot of depth and meaningful choices, Grim Dawn is not for you.  There are some choices to be made but their impact on the game and story are minimal.

Basically, it's a revamped Titan Quest, downscaled (the battles are more meaningful and less about killing 9001 Satyrs at once with an AoE spell), bugfixed and rebalanced, in a whole new setting.

it's not an RPG, obviously.

However, it IMHO is the best aRPG ever made, right next to Diablo2. If it enjoys constant content upgrades like Diablo2 did, it can become a legend.

It's not a trade sim like PoE, which makes it a whole lot more fun.

Oh yes.  There are 6 masteries:

Soldier - Your standard sword & board/2-handed weapon skills with great passives.  My go-to for when I need to add some staying power to a character; very hard to take down.

Demolitionist - Fire-based, primarily ranged class with access to molotov cocktails, grenades, canister bombs, and mortars.  My favorite class in the game for sheer destructive capabilities.

Nightblade - Dual-wielding class that specializes in rapid take down, with some immbolization, poison, bleeding, and teleporting attacks.  Playing purely, it's a glass cannon, but few things live long enough for that to be an issue.

Occultist - Has access to debilitating attacks like a spreading pox, poison orbs, debuffs, and sigils.  Can summon a hellhound and a raven to attack enemies.

Arcanist - Typical magic user that has access to a couple of nova attacks, a replicating missile, an aether ray (this laser beam), meteors, etc.  Another powerful glass-cannon.

Shaman - Specializes in 2-handed weapons, lighting damage, totems, and summoning beasts.  Very tough, very versatile.  Right now I have a 2-handed, lightning-focuses Shaman who is a beast.  Lots of fun to play.

You can mix and match, so right now I have a Pyromancer (Occutlist+Demo), Battle Mage (Arcanist+Soldier), Witch Hunter (Nightblade+Occultist), and a Conjurer (Occultist+Shaman}.

Another nice thing about the game is the Devotion system.  You can find shrines during the game that require purification.  Doing so awards you with a devotion point you can spend on constellations.  Constellations add to your passive abilities/defensives/pet perks and can also add special attacks to your abilities.  For example, I have a skill that is assigned to my canister bomb, so there's a chance when a canister bomb detonates, a mini-volcano erupts.  Another skill tags an enemy with a nasty debuff, while another allows me to summon a pet.

Even better, you can respec skill points and devotion points.  Just be forewarned, you can not reselect your masteries.  So if you pick a Soldier/Demo combo, you will be stuck with that combo.

My general issue with ARPGs is that their entire core gameplay is usually exhausted after 30 minutes in game, after that it's just new skills and enemies to kill. Quests are identical, the only way to complete them is always "kill everything", the creeps become more numerous but hardly more interesting to fight, tons of junk loot, merchants sell either scrap or everything worth buying is overpriced, the first several hours in the game are always some boring tutorial where everything dies in 1-2 hits all the while your character can't do more than a few low-end attacks with nothing special about them... Does Grim Dawn deviate from that "formula"? If yes, I might give it a try.

If that bores you, don't play Grim Dawn, because it's essentially like every other aRPG when it comes to type of action. You mow down mobs. That's about it.

For me, it's very relaxing. 170 hours in, not bored at all, still trying new builds and things.

Some thoughts:

1. Crafting system and money acquired/spent is up to level 40 at least well balanced. We'll see how stuff goes later. Stuff is expensive, so you're actually interested in selling stuff. In Titan Quest, crafting was much easier, and money had zero value. I didn't even bother picking up items, I ignored picking up money as well.
2. The classes do suffer from slight imbalances (Arcanist Frost nova is OP as hell, but his other skills are pretty underwhelming), however, the dual-class system is very pleasant, it allows a lot of creative freedom. Except Arcanist, I find the classes to be equally interesting and rewarding to play, which is rare for an ARPG of that type. Epics aren't frustratingly rare, their drop rate seems about right, and they are almost never "junk". Unlike Titan Quest, where they were in 99% cases total junk.
3. Epics are actually very useful, but rare ('green') items can be very powerful as well. That makes a balanced itemization where many items offer competitive value.
4. Not too many bugs, but there are some: those "floating eyes" sometimes die without any death animation (they just disappear); music refuses to start at all randomly, characters can go through small obstacles.
5. Killing stuff is wildly satisfying. The "super flying bodies" from TQ are back and as fun as always. Lightning bolting a zombie to see it fly in a wide arc 15 feet in the air... priceless.
6. There's a bit too much elements, IMHO. Do we really need poison AND acid as separate elements, for example? There's also many elements that are under-developed, hardly having any skills and celestial powers that use them, for instance Chaos element appears in only a couple skills, and almost always as an additional damage element.

sounds interesting. Been back to the good ol Diablo 2 myself lately.

I enjoyed Titan Quest mainly for the setting.

Seeing the responses on the game makes me wanna try it out.

I guess it's pirating time. Arr.

it kinda feels like old Diablo. To me it's an arpg that finally got it right. Killing stuff is satisfiying, there's plenty of options, and itemization feels good enough. That's literally all that I need. It took ~15 years...

Well, despite my ingame record, I didn't get very far. Because trying new builds is just too much fun No major annoyances so far. Watch out for those earth elemental thingies, tho. While their meteors fall slowly, it's really easy to die to those if two hit you at the same time. In general, my advice to enjoy earlygame (I'm playing on Veteran of course*) is to stack bristly fur (a very common component). +90 HP and +25% constitution, on each armor piece, really makes a difference if your class and build is not big on healing.

Similarly, I recommend putting ectoplasm everywhere it fits (for characters of levels 20-40). Each grants +2 energy regen and +20% energy. Five of those make even dumb melee classes regen energy fast, with a huge mana pool.

*You can pick between Normal and Veteran for 1st difficulty setting. Good thing, Veteran does add a bit of a challenge. normal is a faceroll. The game follows the "normal, nightmare, hell" difficulty settings where finishing one unlocks the other, but normal gives you also an option to spice things up from the scratch (recommended)

Going back to Titan Quest, I remember that shooters of act IV were a nasty suprise, doing 500+ damage per shot with high attack speed (a common character had 2000-4000 HP at that point). I wonder if same thing happens here.

All right, maybe I'll try some mindless fun for relaxation, it's not like that there are any good RPGs after The Witcher 3 and Tides of Numenera is still beyond the horizon. You now officially have a subconscious burden on your former game forum moderating ass if it turns out that you're misleading the honest Internet folk.
