When working for 8 hours in a warehouse listening to over a hundred tracks a day most just go right by without even being notices few stick out (for me), these two especially:

LeAnn Rimes - Can't Fight The Moonlight I love what she does with her voice, she hits both high and low notes simultaneously creating this sensational segments (2:33 on the vid, there is a few earlier too just for reference).

And this: P!nk - What About Us Amazing.

He is more imaginative when it comes to the blues in this one. The thing about Peterson is, he swings so hard, sometimes he gets lost in it. Live at Ronnie Scott's performence of Boogie Blues Etude above is one of those, I think. On the other hand, this version of C Jam also has Ray Brown on bass, Peterson and Brown are practically "married" when it comes to swinging.

While at it, one of my favorite versions of Gershwin's It Aint Necessarily So from him and the Big Band favorite Topsy. The original Topsy from 1930's Count Basie Orchestra has Lester Young on tenor sax and I think it is such a significant example of why Young is considered one of the greatest sax players of that era.

Interesting. Because strangely enough, I listened to a lot of Yes lately. Stuff like Roundabout, Yours is no Disgrace, I've seen all good people or Starship Trooper

And, Gershwin - I seem to remember that I mentioned him as - for me - being one on par with the "classics".
It's kust him having more - or different - instruments available to arrange compositions with.
The thing with Gershwin is that virtually every great has done a version of, say, Summertime - even Iggy Pop, sorry, Maria Callas paid her dues to that one -, and it seems it's a lot about the mood it's done in. Listen to Nina Simone's version and compare it with Norah Jones. Or Janis Joplin.

A keyboard player friend of mine was obsessed with Yes, used to play it all the time. I was never much into them though.

When it comes to Summertime, among dozens of versions I heard, a live one with Willie Dixon on vocal and Memphis Slim on piano captures me the most. The overwhelmingly calm, even lazy singing and the thing they do with the loose whistling matches the sentiment and the lyrics of the song so perfectly, it's just amazing: Summertime

I don't think, that will become my favorite version, but I also don't think I'll ever have a favorite version.

For me, listening to Yes was revisiting the past. At a certain stage of my life I've been listening to them and others, like Peter Gabriel's Genesis, Gentle Giant, even Emerson, Lake and Palmer and other reasons why Punk has been as successful as it was.
However, they also led me to give Frank Zappa a try, and that was, ultimately, what made it worth it. I had listened to some Zappa before. A friend of mine had "Weasels Ripped My Flesh", and while My Guitar wants to Kill your Mama, followed by the duo of Oh No/Orange County Lumber Truck had left QUITE a favorable impression, the rest was more like, hm? What?
So eventually, me and two friends of mine decided to each buy a Zappa album, to look what Zappa was all about and then compare notes.
One bought Overnite Sensation, the other One Size Fits All, and me, I bought Zoot Allures. I thought it at least. When I put the record on, I couldn't believe it was Zappa - and it wasn't. The label said so, but side A had only 3 songs, while the label said it should be 4. In fact it was a false pressing; what I got was a George Benson record, probably Breezin', can't remember anymore. I got a replacement. And when I put that on, it hit me with Wind Up Workin in a Gas Station, followed by Black Napkins, and by the time that became The Torture Never Stops, I was completely enraptured.
The other two were as well, mind you.

As a footnote, I still think, that The Yes Album is a pretty good record with pretty good music

I've acquired a peculiar taste in music.  Here I am listening to Yes at the moment, then, just like that, I'm blasting Children of Bodom the next.  Then I switch to something like Epic Fantasy Ambient music, and after that I go on an Alice In Chains run starting with We Die Young.

I guess it comes down to me being more accepting of different music, as opposed to how I was three years ago when the most of the music I listened to was basically Slipknot, Nirvana and the Guitar Hero 4 playlist
