My idea is quite simple and not too risky: if you lack knowledge or inspiration to build a entirely new Heroes game, go for a generic one but overall moddable. In the end, if you feel you have a better idea, you buy the game then implement it, instead of daily garbage, or just skip it and keep your adrenaline at safe levels.

Pretty much this. Also I pretty much agree with everything else said in the OP of the thread

Was it in HoMM IV you could have a battle with an easy win, but because your own units thought the battle was a sure loss, you'd get negative morale one round after the other?

Edit: Btw. large creatures aren't all bad. Taking up more squares can be a really good thing, as it can allow for easier terrain exploit, block more resurrection targets, block dragon breath, and more as well I'm sure.
The question isn't what good THE HUMAN PLAYERS can do with it, the question is how guarding stacks fare under the command of the AI.

Am I the only one who thinks that a good starter would be taking 3d graphics and throwing it in the trash can?

Nah, Heroes 4 shows it can work very well.

Heroes 4 had not the sparkling & shiny morbid obsession Heroes 6 had for lush graphics.

I can understand and I actually endorse re-imagining the factions to make them cooler  - I actually endorsed mayan orcs and egyptian undeads, you may dislike them but I think you can see the logic. No one would be happy if the next HOMM vampire is a copypaste version of the HOMM3 one. But re imagining the flavour, looks and visuals doesn't make necessary to go 3D. You could change the flavour as many times you want and still keep a wholly 2D game.

And the point is - HOMM5 and HOMM6 were sluggish as hell. I'd do anything to spare the engine some unnecessary work if I had the option to do so, and going 2D seems the most immediate idea to me.

Yeah, the 3D of the last "M&M:H" games need to go away. Not only because it makes the game go sluggish and makes map overview a living hell (both were already the case in H5) - but because it encourages more Warcraftization of the content as well. Seems like a decision made only because Erwan and his gangsters didn't think that the segment of young teens they where targeting could ever appreciate strategy, it all had to be about cool battle animations that got outdated in a few years anyway.

A modern version of H4:s graphics is actually pretty much what I imagine would work well: isometric 3D. There are several pretty gorgeous looking games being developed in that projection.

Yeah, you see, you nailed it.

Honestly sometimes I launch HOMM3 just because I don't feel like playing a game that takes minutes to load a screen. Seeing how smoothly it runs is like balm after trying a HOMM6 campaign.

The mindset of copying popular contemporary series to stay hip and current has not exactly worked wonders for heroes. Maybe because it always comes up short by comparison. For once it would have been nice if they tried to surpass their source of inspiration. But the one point where they try to stand apart is ironically their poorly designed lore.

The whole direction gives an impression of hacks and wannabes ..

There's nothing wrong with having a 3D environment rendered in real time, it's more about the camera's perspective. While it's true that translating everything into 2d sprites will lower the requirements and rendering time, a 3d environment will offer more realism with features such as dynamic lighting, better perception of depth, better particle effects and of course easy object rotations which nonetheless would prove a great map-making tool.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Yep. Isometric 3D. Looks nice but still easy to get an overview. No need to zoom in on everything when playing a strategy game for the Ancient's sake. Would be perfect for any future Heroes game.

There are many things that could work greatly, mind you, but I'm trying to consider what hasn't been done and could be (and could've been) with little effort. There are certainly producers out there who could dish a fully 3d HOMM without torturing you with endless rendering time, and it is certainly legitimate to ask for it, but my point is how easily and with relatively less resources and efforts they could lessen the burden on the engine and still deliver quality products.

For how much I love Ashan's aesthetic (and I do) I still prefer looking at HOMM3 because it runs smoothly and doesn't make my heart bleed with glow.

Maybe ditching 3d could be seen as a weak compromise solution, but to me it would be a lot less damaging on the game than HOMM6 loading times and uncertain system requirements. And I've heard that HOMM7 doesn't fare much better.
