HoMM1?!

How old is your PC or is it a legacy type of a single core PC from the mid-90's?

I don't think that HoMM1 would work on my Win. 10 PC. Maybe HoMM3 HD with ERAII mod. on it. HoMM3 complete does not have an installer program that works on my way too recent PC system(very good reason to not even consider HoMM3 of any version of it all).

HoMM5:T.o.t.E. + many game experience enhancing mods = one hell of an enjoyable game that works like a charm on Win. 10 Home Edition(version 1511).

I somewhat enjoyed HoMM6:Shades of Darkness v.2.1 but, disliked the ever complex and large array of Skills to invest your bonus skill points. Just plain love the graphics and the visual growth and status of your town that actually show on the adventure map.

GoG version (for all old games btw) is constantly updated to remain compatible with the newest win version.

I hate that you can chose the skills yourself rather than getting a random choice. This makes me always chose the very same skills over and over again.

It's not even a year old. The answer is GoG again. The GoG version has some build in version of DosBox which makes it run on my Win10.

Heroes VI is actually by far the best Heroes game in my opinion (And i've played them all - including I and II)

First you can recruit creatures/ troops from any town you control to any town you control - which speeds up play massively. And since the AI can do the same it doesn't make it any easier.

There are also basic town portal buildings you can build which let a hero teleport back to them if it's the nearest town - and an Advanced Town Portal ugraded building which lets a hero teleport from that town to another town you control.

The character skills trees are much more interesting and varied than in other Heroes games, with different factions and classes of characters able to get completely different skills from one another.

The only downside is that if you don't play online via uplay then you can't get the starting bonuses that you can build up on your account. Eventually you can choose up to 4 starting bonuses at once out of dozens on any mission or campaign.

You can buy programmes like VMware that allow you to run a "virtual machine"  on your PC or laptop with a different operating system, separate from your main one. You have to buy a copy of windows XP or 98 or whatever you want to use thought and install it on the virtual machine.

You mix up the effects of both Town Portals . If one town has a Basic Town Portal, you can use that to teleport to a Fort or Town that you own. It is the Advanced Town Portal that allows a hero to portal back to a town from anywhere on the map, in which case the closest town with an ATP is the default destination. This cannot be changed, unlike in H3 where Expert Earth Magic allows you to pick the town you want to go to as soon as you have the Town Portal spell in your spellbook. If your hero is in a town without any portal built, you can only use ATP to return to a town that has both.

If it's the Dynasty Traits you're talking about, you can get 5 slots in the end. New players start with three and can unlock one through the Altar of Wishes and one through spending Uplay units. It's fun how walkthroughs on CelestialHeavens only take into account that the player has three slots available.

It also takes away tactical depth, to be honest, since individual Towns and Forts have a reduced strategic value; whether you capture them or not, the troops accumulated in them are still available for recruitment by your opponent after capturing them.

Except that with the free-pick style and the normal tendency of most people to min-max their Heroes, you end up picking the same skills all the time. The spell school differences can't make up for that tendency.

Not playing through the Conflux also meant that you can't use any mainhand weapon artifacts, as they're all Legacy bound - and Legacy only works when you're online. In fact, if your internet connection botches on you during play, you get kicked back to the main menu without a chance to save the game.

Troop count is of course one factor in the gameplay of H6, but one must not forget that owning a Fort also earns you a sum of Gold each day. A non-native Fort is worth 250 per day, one belonging to your faction earns you 500 a day. Also, Forts provide a good way to manage your kingdom, as mines in the area cannot be captured unless the enemy takes the fort. You can teleport a hero from a town to a Fort for defensive purposes or to just skip a whole lot of traveling (when the distance between your town and destination takes days to cover). Sadly, the AI barely has the wits to also do that. Yea, it goes for your forts and converts stuff to their faction, but as far as I recall I only saw an AI portal away from a Fort rather than towards one.

Picking roughly the same skills is in fact true for me, I have a certain build in mind for my Might and Magic-oriented heroes. However, sometimes I like to experiment with stuff I didn't choose before, like that one skill that gives your units extra movement in siege battles. It's usually the passive abilities that you should pick, as they don't consume a hero's turn. Of course, most if not all of the spells are active by default (except the Spell Power buffs etc). This is where Dynasty Weapons come in handy, because some provide access to spells that a Hero can't always have. Stronghold lacks Prime Magic, for instance. But with the help of the Soulreaver Staff you can still create a Time Stasis-like trap on the battlefield. Every school has a DW based around it, some provide a spell from that school or an ability associated with it (like Will of Urgash and Heartrending Song).

I have been interested in trying H6 for a while now and after reading through a couple of threads here I have to say I have been put off. I think the change that sounds the worst is the online connection requirement. It sounds awful I've got to be honest, I don't think it is worth wasting my time or money. Shame really

I would say H6 has the worst AI out of all HOMM versions I have played (everything from H3 to H6). The skillwheel makes heroes development paths very similar and almost independent on the faction. Some ideas in H6 are interesting, but after some play I have came back to earlier versions, especially H5 AI mod and MMH55.

Yeah it's a shame they screwed it up so bad. I think I will be better off trying H5.5 instead. Might sort that out while I wait for the succession wars V0.8 to be released.

H6 is different. It's one of my favourite games but some of the features have been chosen in a strange way. However it is a very unique game with many interesting features. It just offers you different things to enjoy than the rest of the Heroes games. It is more about building your dynasty than about the missions/maps themselves.

P.S: Internet connection is not required /just for activation/, but you will lose many interesting bonuses offline.

You forget one of the most important aspects: you can't have Dynasty weapons. You have no main hand artifacts as a result in any of your games.

Don't really care about that but considering they are an important part of the campaigns, getting one and being unable to use it is rubbing it in your face. I mean you can only find them in single player but you can only use them if you play online, this is an outrageous design. You paid for it? Don't care, you must play online suckers!

Why do they do this online authentication snow it's so annoying when you've already paid for the game, Blizzard always pulls these kind of tricks as well

This is not just authentication, it requires constant internet access. Back in the day online saves were not compatible with offline ones so if the servers went down or you lost access the game would exit to main menu and you'd be unable to load since your earlier saves were online!

Naturally, it happened to me and it was not amusing.

It is funny.. While H7 corrected many of the flaws of H6(rare resources, factions on release, town trees, skill system, spells back in mage guilds, colour-coded lineups etc), H6 still left a better taste. Battles at least were fun, graphics looked good and there was more synergy between units.

Oh I'm not the only one who has this lingering feeling, then.

I honestly think a good 30% of the fanrage can be blamed on the Conflux. I really cannot think a more horrid, insulting and nonsensical way to manage the game's memory.
