the odds of a group of medusas stoning another group is dependant on:
- number of medusas (obviously)
- medusas attack skill (quite low)
- defense skill of defending creature

a hero with grandmaster combat will rarely ever get stoned, even against 200 medusas.  Medusas will stone many more level 1 or 2 units, stone a few level 3 units, and once in a while stone a level 4 unit.

I find it definitely balancing this way.

I don't think the defense does much, because my heroes had plenty of that (upwards of 100) and still got stoned by 40 medusas.  And when I had all my spells on them, their defense could soar as high as 150 (mass blur is soooo cool)... where did you get that information?  Maybe I'll create a scenario and run some tests tonight...

interesting .... hmm, maybe I'm wrong

I just remember when going against big stacks of medusas, they'd never stone my high level warriors.  And rarely stone my level 4's

If what you're saying is true (which I have no reason to doubt), I think you guys complaining play the Lysander campaign using a weird (read: crappy) strategy. And it also makes the special more balanced.

Play smart

I rarely lost heroes once I was careful, but I don't see why that amount of care is necessary.  I can pit my level 24 hero (alone, no creatures or other heroes) against any other group of 30-50 level 2 creatures and use no spells, just GM combat, expert melee and expert archery.  Usually the hero will win.  Against medusas, it's not at all uncommon to simply have bad luck and have a stack of 30 medusas do very minimal damage (10 or so), but still stone my hero.  I don't see how any strategy will ever change that fact.

The only strategy that I found useful was to put my heroes behind my "sacrificial" stacks for the medusa fights, and again, this wasn't necessary for other level 2 fights.

wiggy_wam, I'll try and remember to test it tonight.  If it turns out that higher defense lowers stoning rate, I'll retract most of what I've said

It's just that I seem to recall losing heroes way too much at first, but as I know, the human mind tends to remember bad things more than good...

Probably a high magic resistance can prevent stoning too...

another good test idea.  I must go home soon (I work wacky hours) and test this out... high defense, high magic res... what else could make a difference?

Magic resistance could indeed have some effect on the stoning, as it also resists other creature abilities, not just spells.

I mean 'some' in the sence that with medusas the hero will not have fi a 50% if he has Adv. Resistance to ignore the stoning on a hero.
That is mainly the problem of the hero, he has only a stack size 1, if only 1 gaze comes trough, hes gone, while if Dwarves where targeted, they would resist half the gazes and the rest would die from them, having at least some effect.

So if a 50% hero gets 2 gazes against, there should be a 25% chance he resists them both. This can be testplayed only by using creatures for reason mentioned above (with a hero you could never tell how many gazes he would exactly have had against him, w/ or w/o resistance)

It would also mean that a hero with GM resistance would be immune to the gaze, im going to testplay this soon.

I've done extensive testing and posted the results: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=4&TID=4286

a brief synopsis: a level 40 hero can be killed by 50 medusas, though it's definitely not a guarantee.  Get up to 200 medusas, and the level 40 is toast.  Defense does seem to help against gazing, but not by much.  And magic res seems to be key.  100% magic res means medusas cannot kill your hero with a gaze.  Never.  They can hit you hard and knock your HP down, but they never ever can gaze you.

My conclusion is that gazing is still too powerful, but not nearly as bad against heroes as I thought previously.  However, against level 4 creatures, 50 medusas are still quite powerful.  Check out my post for full details.  Be warned, it's long.

Good to hear that! Good job brody.

btw, anyone know how that magic dampening structure (which grants 10% magic resistance) in barbarian town works exactly? Is the effect cumulative?

Well, of course you can't defend your hero for 100% (I mean the situations in which you can't ), but..

In the Life camapign, on scenario 1 you get three towns to begin with, and conquer more, so it's hard to believe that you won't get Song of Peace. Your magician will propably be faster that the medusa, so.. you get the idea

Besides that, every alignment (except for might) has her kind of a disturber - Wasp Swarm, Confusion, Song of Peace, etc' .. order even has forgetfulness.

About attacking a medusa - you have 1st strike spells and abilities, and, on M and GM, your hero will get them in Melee/Archery.
