The .rar is a standalone (you still need the original HoMM3 data files. Read the further description or readme.txt file if you're new with the mod), although you can just unpack it over the previous version.

We present to you a unique modification for Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Although we call it a mod, we haven't actually modified the HoMM3 source code. The relation between the original game occurs only at a level of visual and auditory resources. That means the graphics, sounds, music, and the whole Heroes of Might&Magic 3 theme of course!
The only relation to the classic game modding concept is the fact, that our project is just an overlay for HoMM3, and will never be a standalone program!
You can't run the mod if you are not owning the original Heroes of might & magic files.

You can call it a Mod, or just a fan tribute project.
(If you have any questions regarding the concept itself, feel free to ask).


Unlike battles of huge armies, where proper tactics and military training are everything, surviving in post-reckoning world requires equal amount of dexterity, strength and courage. Acquiring psychological advantage and thinking several steps ahead are also crucial when fighting a single opponent and we've put a lot of effort to create such an experience ;P.


The game is in its alpha stage. Engine is mostly finished, although several new mechanics must be implemented along with the rest of HoMM3 creatures. For now we've got 3 playable characters:
- Goblin - close combat melee fighter
- Troglodyte - long distance melee fighter
- Lizardman - shooter/rogue.


At the moment there are two game modes: duel against human opponent and duel against goblin AI with 3 difficulty levels.
Although our AI is doing its best to Beat'you up, we recommend trying a Player vs Player mode, which is a core part of the game.
We are planning to add castle defense coop, 2v2 battles and an option of online game, although it is a long term plan.

To run the mod you need to copy the HoMM 3 data folder to HoMM 3 CR directory.

We hope you'll have great time playing our mod.

To clear up some of the controversy.

1. WE HAVE NEVER CLAIMED AN NEVER WILL CLAIM ANY RIGHTS TO CONTENT PRESESENTED IN THE GAME.
2. YOU CANT PLAY THE GAME IF YOU DONT HAVE AN ORIGINAL HOMM3 DATA FILES. THE GAME WILL NEVER RUN WITHOUT THOSE.
3. WE GREATLY (!!) RESPECT THE FATHERS CREATORS FROM 3DO AND NWC (THEY'VE CREATED A GAMES THAT WE LOVE AND ADORE SINCE OUR CHILDHOOD) ALONG WITH UBISOFT - A COMPANY WHICH OWN THE RIGHTS FOR THE HOMM3 GAME, INCLUDING ALL THE VISUAL AND AUDITORY ASSETS.

It is a completely freeware blend of content made by fans for fans

That's interesting. Though people would appreciate some photos and videos first, I think, to see the real deal.

But, honestly, I doubt anything survived. The earth trembled, towns and villages got burned and everyone had to go through the portal or died trying.

it doesn't recognize the mouse? I can't get in game, and every time I move between options it asks me if I want to format my HD.

No, the mouse is not used by the game (it's designed this way so you can use a gamepad only if you want). The drive C: format is a joke ofc, you must've hit esc.

it requires a gamepad only? I don't have one so I am stuck at that mage guild screen, no key press responds.

OP claims this is a mod but this is a blatant lie. For starters it does not modify anything in any way, it is a standalone game created from scratch. The real problem is that even if we were to describe a program that uses the original graphic etc assets from the Data folder of HoMM3 as a "mod" (even though it's not), that still does not include this program. The program linked to here does not make any use of that data other than possibly checking if it's there. It instead loads its assets from the data.win file distributed in the download, which contains sprites owned by Ubisoft amongst other things.

To OP & friends:
Stop this nonsense. Labeling a standalone Game Maker game as a "unique mod" for attention is already bad, but distributing something with copyrighted material while also asking for donations for it is really bad.

Still, your concept itself is not bad. Just do it right if you are serious about this project. If you do want to make a mod it's also not impossible, have a look at h3msnake for a proof of concept of keyboard control mechanics modified into H3 and its editor.

As long as you distribute your game with these copyrighted resources and use these distributed files instead of any files from the original game, it is still standalone. Whether you have a check to see whether files that you are not using are present or not does not change that.

Potmdehex, you're absolutely right, and by no means we wanted to do any harm to ubisoft or any copyright owners.
The concept of HoMM3 fighting/hack'n'slash game originated years ago when we were kids. Now the moment came that we realised our ability to make it real.

We were NEVER ever trying to mislead anybody, we are just quite fresh in modding and game dev environment. We've mentioned that the game isn't a mod at our webpage.

The issue that the game needs the original data file is dictated by the fact that we didn't want the game to do any harm to the copyright owners (you literaly can't run the game if you don't own the HoMM3 files), and were looking for the way to show the game to the community

Despite everything, you have noticed the simple fact which was overlooked by us so far.
We're including the graphics ripped by Cyrus Anihilator in our .exe
and we possibly are not allow to to that.

We would really want to see a Beat'em up X Fighting X Hack'n'Slash game exist, with all the original HoMM3 creatures on board.
But achieving it through the original .lod files.

Thanks for your feedback,
I think we might have not paid enough attention to that.
The fact that original resources included in our .exe are encrypted, may not be enough.

Although you can find such non-commercial tribute games and remakes (which use original assets) in the web.

What do you think about the Heroes of Might and Magic 3: In The Wake of Gods?
That mod, which is undoubtfull a great piece of work, distrubutes the original decrypted Heroes of Might and Magic 4 graphics, which are included in the WoG files.

hey that looks awesome mate,
please get rid of the patreon and the patreon link mate, you absolutely can't do that that's illegal lol

other than that I think it's who cares no big deal, it's similar to the Conquests of Might and Magic for Civilization which is fine, plus WoG and many custom WoG maps are full of illegal ripped assets from other games which nobody cares lol

Of course, and half of Era mods also distribute copyright material, as assets from other games. So we are all guilty of something, but when you are not capable to design graphics from scratch, you do what you can. However none of those mods is generating -or trying to- any revenue.

To some degree mods always are in the gray area of legality. Companies tolerate them because they do more good than harm - as long as the mod still requires you own a paid-for copy of the game. From the opening text it appears this is still the case here, so I'll allow the thread.

(I did not download the mod, however, so if a legal copy of the game is not required, someone let me know.)

Heroes III is 17 years old game. There is HD edition by Ubi. Creator firm was bancruted. So it is abandonware. All NWC games are very old in fact...
