Weather and night

Once I was thinking how weather and night should affect the gameplay and there are few ideas that struck me.

There should be several types of weather events like rain, wind, sandstorms, blizzards, droughts plus night.

Each of these event should occur randomly (approximately once a week, but the random factor would be customizable either in map settings in game or map editor) and should last one day (or sometimes more). Here arises a question if night should last whole day – answer is yes, it is fantasy world and occurrence of such long nights could be easily explained in some lore.
Events could affect hero movement, creatures’ stats and abilities and so on.

Here are few particular ideas I have:

Night
Hero’s movement is slightly decreased. Creatures connected with night/darkness (e.g. undead, pixies, cave creatures) have increased morale/intiative during battles. For all shooters there is low of missed attack.

Rain
Creatures connected with water and plants (e.g. treants, water elementals) have increased luck/intiative. Hero’s movement is rapidly decreased (maybe even to half). Also movement on the battlefield is slightly decreased. Creatures connected with fire has decreased luck.

Wind
Shooters who use arrows have relatively high chance to miss an attack. Flying creatures have slightly decreased movement/intiative.

Droughts
Movement of all heroes and creatures is slowed except for constructs. Due to exhaustion, you cannot build in town during this day.

These are only few ideas that came on my mind. If you like it, you can also add some and expand this.
I am looking forward for each opinion on this

Wouldn't it make more sense if hero's vision was decreased during the night?

Weather effects work in Real-Time Strategy, I wonder if it's possible to have something of the sort in a Turn-Based game. Does anyone know of such games with weather effects?

I do like your ideas! However, I think that during a rain-event, fire-based creatures should suffer from reduced health rather than reduced luck. Or they should inflict less damage. Or maybe they take minor damage each turn?

Sandstorms would damage or slow down constructs such as golems. I can imagine that not only droughts have an effect on town building. And you need to consider in what quantity rain, wind etc appears. Heavy rain, light rain, strong wind, hurricane, etc? The RTS game Empire Earth II has these various weather types and of varying intensity. A full blizzard is much worse than random snowfall . In that game you can construct roads to make sure your troops are (relatively) unaffected from these weather conditions. I think a Heroes game with these things should include skills or abilities that will help a hero/army move in bad weather conditions.

Total war has some of these in its battles if you're interested to see how it works (though it was removed for Total warhammer)

In general though I'm torn. On the one hand it could add quite a lot of variation and interesting scenarios if handled right. If not it could potentially just add a bunch of mechanics that only serves to confuse and add complexity for complexities sake, which is never a good thing. still, it's not a bad idea and i wouldn't mind seeing it realized in some way. Perhaps through magic? Divinity: original sin comes to mind with it's elemental effects.

Here are the reminders of how the game works according to your suggestions.

Night: Heroes and armies are forced to camp it out and, therefore do not do anything from sunset until dawn.

Rain: Only Necropolis and Inferno could see their troops killed off if not sheltered properly in a serious downpour of a shower. Crops would benefit greatly right after a serious drought and, help boost the number of level one creatures for Haven and Orcs alike(only). Would slow down the movement points of an army when using dirt roads and savanna fields. Could create flash flooding and damage the non-fortified towns that are right next to a large river or lake.

Wind: Only bad for the matter based shooters(bows and crossbows using units) during combat onto a non tree line based battlefield. Create bad visibility in a desert like territory thus slowing down the army that is not native to such terrain(sand-storm bad for all non Wizards bound troops). Could create events such as the sinking of a vessel that you were on or not and, a large tree that fell on that day on a bricked road that you are stuck using your army for a whole day at clearing it out.

Droughts: Would only do the opposite of the Rainy events. Benefitting the evil factions and, damages greatly troop building of both Haven and Orc alike(Thirst and shipyards have no water to christen the newly made ships-hence no pop-up window stating that no ships can be purchased at this time). Plus, the wood could have dried out too much to be of any use at all.

How's that for an improvement onto your previous proposal?

It would, thanks for good observation

That's why I think, that these events should occur rarely. If it happened quite often, the game should be unplayable imo

I am not sure if we understand each other, but this would mean, that all you can do is to pass the turn, when it's night.

This sounds pretty good. Rest seems to me rather complicated to implement it into game.

Well, I'm not sure about this. The basic idea seems to be complex itself. Expanding it this way should do it more complex therefore confusing.

Thank you for your feedback

I am not sure that a drought could be considered a day long event.

Well, in case you think, it should last longer, I think that living longer period of time in such "severe" conditions should make the game rather unplayable. Or?

It is not that it should last longer I just find the name "drought" unfitting as a drought is a large amount of time without rain. Perhaps just calling it a hot day or humid would work better?

Forgot about the snowy territory of the Dwarves.

In the weekly event of very strong winds, a strong Blizzard is affecting all valleys and mountainous natural environments of the whole Grimheim region of the world of Ashan.

I think that these eventful weeks could be implemented via a hard-coded modding. Should be tried onto Heroes 5(new feature of the current mod. of Heroes 5.5) to see if the whole thing could be implemented as a modding possibility through Heroes 7.

Very good example, Maurice.

Hero army usually rests and sleeps at night, let's say 10pm-6am, so maybe in summer time whole day as day exept last 2 hours; in winter some more night in the morning and in the evening; polar night and polar day in northernmost/southernmost regions...but we have turn-based game what if our hero fight with hero who didn't move...so maybe turn should last not the whole day but for example 3 hours

Not bad, but have to see it when all dwellings on map too. If you have to set your desktop to max light to avoid traps or missing things, then is not worth. Should remain aesthetically only.
