If so, this is the problem. Giving something as dangerous as a shotgun to somebody who has never used a firearm of this type (or any type) before and leaving him/her unsupervised without even explaining the basics is grossly irresponsible. I'd close the shooting range before blaming the woman (not that she's incredibly bright by the looks of it but that's no excuse for the lack of fundamental safety measures).

Yeah, that's pretty much basic common sense, even if a beginner knows about the recoil and tries to hold the gun properly, I heard that holding it the wrong way could cause you to dislocate your shoulder and that alone calls for a mandatory supervisor.

the best ranges are the ones up north. they consist of open field with a secure backdrop, and firing lanes, and that's it. anyone who ever shoots firearms better know what they're doing beforehand. if that lady didn't have anyone teaching her(and she didn't do any research on her own beforehand), then she shouldn't have held a gun, period. like i said, i think there oughta be laws against stupid people doing anything that could endanger others. that there aren't, just shows you how flawed the system is, to deal with idiots.

when you buy a gun new, it comes with safe usage instructions. if she was in a shop and only renting one, then she should have done her homework beforehand. range instructors are only there when there's classes being held. she could have attended any firearm training class beforehand; it's easily apparent that she didn't. which is why she's to blame. regular indoor ranges don't have any real supervision. they have rules and guidelines posted(what to do if your weapon jams, etc), and any mistakes are the sole responsibility of the firearm user, by law.

guns aren't toys. they're to be treated with respect. if someone doesn't respect them enough to LEARN about them before use, it's THEIR fault if anything happens. luckily, no one was harmed when that idiot mishandled a shotgun. it could have been a REAL darwin award, had that been a different weapon she had dropped due to her misuse.

edits: man, screwed up a lot of their/there/they're(s).

exactly. many people shouldn't have those either. there should be levels to the amount of rights people have(especially when it comes to dangerous things like cars and guns). if you can't show common sense or you suck at something that could be dangerous for others, you shouldn't be allowed the same rights as others. just like with mental patients. anyone without a working brain shouldn't be allowed dangerous things.

Okay, this also makes perfect sense but it still wouldn't hurt to put a supervisor in ranges. I mean, you can not know beforehand who will do something stupid, not every kind of stupid is testable like in IQ tests or diagnosed like mental disorders. It would be like putting a life guard tower on a beach, it wouldn't be someone else's fault if you go way out in deep water despite being a bad swimmer but you shouldn't die for being reckless either. In case of guns you may also put others in danger.

i'm more for keeping guns out of dumbass's hands. lifeguards are there because there are many things that can go wrong in water(cramps, undertow, weak swimmers, sharks, rockfish, etc). when it comes to guns, if you don't know how to handle them(especially in an environment DESIGNED for their safe use), you shouldn't be allowed access to them. period. might as well hand a monkey a gun and say, "go for it, champ".

Problem is, Frederick, that you have no reliable method to classify somebody as a "dumbass" in a shooting range. Yeah, not letting stupid people do stupid things which put other people in danger sounds nice, how do you implement that in practice however? Especially in the US where everybody, from room temperature IQ to Einstein's mental peer, thinks that it's his fundamental right to wave guns around whenever he feels like it. Instructors in the shooting ranges not only show people how to shoot, they also ensure that nobody will get hurt in the process. At least where I live.
