[Allmir Saga] Blood on the Border (IC)

Port town Connin, east Svad region, Kingdom of Karston

Here begins the story that shaped the political map of east Cordell...

                                    ***

The long winter is finally gone.  Peasants put up their stands on the roads' edges to sell whatever produce they can.  Commoners can be heard whispering, talking silently: "War is coming".
Mud splats under the boots on the streets - soldier boots.  Karstonian regulars are milling around, enjoying their last moments of peace.  Who knows whether they'll live to return home.  With their king's blessing they march upon this soil for the glory of their kingdom.  "For Karston", they exclaimed after the king's speech back at the capital city of Faron.  On them they have a shirt, covered by a mail tunic and a sky blue coat with a golden hand holding a sword on their chests, representing Karston, pants, and pair of leather or hide boots.  Every man was supplied with an iron arm of his choice, or a bow.  Those that could afford it, had steel weapons, maybe even a side arm, a helmet or a coif.

There are ships sailing in at least four times a day.  The docks themselves have been expanded - five new piers have been built in the last week.  The mayor sits in his chair, up in his villa on the hill, uncomfortably.  Connin is in an excellent spot for a port town, but the low ground around his home is an easy target for an enemy attacker.  He can only hope that the first offensive will succeed and that the Grand General Athard Gerey will take over the island like a storm.  Athard is a veteran tactician, having fought the wildfolk in the open and forcing them back into their mountains - "Surely a group of Mebruan pawns will prove no challenge for him", the mayor keeps saying to himself.
He stands up from his chair and paces around the room, then proceeds to look through the window.  More ships have landed;  these, however, have no Karstonian soldiers on them.  Instead a colorful group of individuals, sellswords, mercenaries, all of them have been disembarking.  All pursuing their goals, all here for the war, to take advantage of it.  Some young, some old;  some human, some not.  "No matter who they are, as long as they die, and not me", he says.

The recruitment offices are busy both day and night.  Even the elders cannot remember a time when there were as many people on Svad as there are now.  Not that it's a good thing always.  An old woman, probably in her late eighties sits on a bench in front of her run down house, yelling "Blood!  Blood!  Is that what you want?!  Is that what this world has come to?!"  She is visibly shaken, maybe even demented, but the truth isn't far off.  It was only a matter of time before a small skirmish broke out.  Then, a full fledged battle, and after that...  Who knows?

                                    ***

Gulston had just gotten off a ship, but already knew where he was heading.  A newly built stone structure, maybe a hundred meters from the docks, stood out among the wooden houses.  There was a line in front of it, spanning all over to the pier he was on.  The recruitment office.
Gulston fastened his buckle, checking his sword in the process, adjusted his helmet and looked around him.  Dozens of people, mostly soldiers and mercenaries were in his sight.
"Now would be a smart idea to find a place to sleep", he said as he started heading for the inn.

Amanda has nearly boarded off a ship, coming all the way from Avalen. Just as she stepped foot on the land, she was somewhat sad she couldn't explore the lands around Avalen and wasn't glad to see so many soldiers around, either. She writes in her book: "Note 1: Become a mercenary. Adventure starts here and now, in Karston."

With the matter settled, Amanda knew she had to find some allies first, and there is no other place than the tavern. Once the locals gave directions to the tavern, Amanda went there to relax after sailing for so long.

There, she sat on at a table. She went through her purse and was embarrassed she didn't have any money.

"Shoot, I knew I forgot something before I sailed off."

A man approached her.

"Ooh, my lady, let this man buy you a drink." He even had a faint smell of wine.
Amanda studied the man a bit and said: "I'll give you some *pleasure* if you give me that money and a bonus."

The man was excited and gave a lot of coins to Amanda, then he started winking at her. Amanda, however, simply kissed him on the cheek, making the man even more excited.

"Now, get out of here, I gave you enough pleasure as it is." Amanda used a candle and her finger produced fire, which lit the candle. "If you don't leave, I could do the same to you. I am not that dumb."

The man was seemingly terrified and left, while Amanda was glad she earned her first cash.

"This is the finest establishment in town?" Narsila thought out loud as she studied the front of what to her looked like a ramshackle and weak wooden building. Is this where they expected her to spend the night? Thin wooden walls that wouldn't shut out a sound, probably no fireplace in the room, A straw bed without a silk spread and no wine from Symg Peninsula?! And the ruckus that could be heard outside! Laughing, shouting, whistling and whatever that noise some might(with a delusional amount of imagination) call "music" was. No, this would hardly do to someone as magnificent as her. Yet it might be her only option...

She grimaced and walked away. She would have to look for another place first as this was simply unacceptable for someone of her stature.

"Collected as instructed?"
"Yes", the tall mercenary answered irritated, "He was f$cking terrified, probably more than he has ever been in his worthless life."

The mercenary put some tobacco in his mouth, "Never even knew humans could get that wet" he reminisced before chuckling cruelly. Lucy twirled the vial of clear liquid around in front of her face and smiled.

"Thirty pence as promised."

The mercenary seized the bag and counted every last pence, he would not be fooled by a Poppitot again. Satisfied, he closed the bag.

"Well, if you have any more business I MAY be willing to help."
"I will keep that in mind."

Smiling one last time she pocketed her vial and departed. The mercenary turned around and began to leave.

"Sweat of a desperate man", he mumbled, "What the f%ck is wrong with this island?"

Lucy merrily made her way back into town humming her favorite violin tune her father used to play for her. Oh, the days before she was an asset, those were truly divine. Snuggling with her uncle as he told one of his utterly ludicrous stories, she smiled to think of it. Family almost meant something! But every Poppitot grows into assethood eventually, twas just the way of things. Besides, they had grown into a hindrance. Research! Precious research, all destroyed by her father, oh, the horror of it all! But they were not here, not this time, not here to interrupt her work. That was good, quite good. Yes, and best keep interruptions to a minimum on all fronts that woul-Oh, I'm here.

The inn was not the best inn, but this town was not the best town so it would to do. She scurried up to her room. By now the sliver of cow heart had been stewing for a few hours, enough time to get the broth she needed. She up ended the alembic into a vile, then plucked the cow heart out with pliers. Her stomach growled at the sight of it. She had not eaten for a day now, and while it had certainly provided insight into the affects of hunger on the mind, it was time to eat. She finished cleaning her equipment and returned it and the vile of heart broth to her satchel, before heading for dinner. She found herself a spot at the bar.

"A cut and make it big, also greens and ale to wash it down", she demanded, "And make it snappy, I do not pay you to glare at me." She began to snap her fingers.

"C*nt", the bartender grumbled before leaving to fetch her order.

Resting her head on her hand, she began to flip through the mental pages of her coming plans as she waited.

As soon as the Hestan ship docked in Connin a crowd formed in front of the pier, the owner of the ship, a merchant from Carmage, called for the porters to unload the cargo, to prepare the transfer to his warehouse in the town.

Titus took a moment to talk with the merchant:
"Do you not worry of this? The town seems overrun with warriors, sellswords and other of dubious character, isn't this going to ruin your business?" He asked

"Maybe, but taking risks is part of my job, wars can be a great way to make profits, especially considering what I sell..." the merchant answered

Titus saw the barrels of salt, oil and other wares that could survive for long, then said: "Very well then, I think I'll be leaving now, but first, I need you to gather the crew."

The merchant didn't reply, and called his men.

Titus began: "I'm sorry to interrupt your work, but a moment stolen to Avalaya is a moment closer to spiritual and bodily death." after a brief pause he raised his hands and proclaimed: "Blessed are thou Avalaya, for thine gifts to mankind, and for thine mercy upon our souls, deliver us from the suffering of evil, and grant these men your holy peace."

He then allowed the crew to return to work, the merchant approached him and thanked him for his spiritual guidance.

After Titus had left the ship he found the townsfolk eyeing eerily at him, some were muttering something between their lips, others made some subtle gestures, nevertheless Titus approached a beggar on the street, he offered him some money and offered a blessing, but the man replied: "I ain't needin' yer goddess' blessing ya liar, bring yer religious blabbering to somebody else!".
Stunned, Titus wondered why the man was so hostile to the faith, and blamed this on a bad education from the local temple, then, understanding that the people were as hostile as they seemed he went in a inn, hoping to learn something about the populace, and maybe, find a way to approach these irreligious miscreants.

However, he was met with a loud: "GO AWAY YE HOLY OAF!" from all the patrons, the only thing that allowed him to enter was the tingling of money, but that wasn't enough to grant him a good service.
Before eating he tried to start praying, only to be stopped, yet again, by the crowd, he resorted to pray much more tacitly, then started eating his meal.

Zayl inhaled the air of the port town, then immediatly regretted taking off his headscarf. The air reeked of salt, fish, sweaty men-at-arms and horse dung. Frowning, Zayl covered his face again.
The town was bustling with the king's army, ranging from hardened veterans, to fresh recruits, as well as sellswords of all scales and statures.
Zayl made it past all the ruckus into the one inn that looked at least half decent in this town.
The inside was buzzing, but Zayl found a seat by the bar. He ordered a lamprey pie and a jug of wine to go with it.
The typical noise of the inn surrounded him. some were gambling, some were singing, although that sounded like a flock of roosters with sore throats, and some were trying to get lucky with the tavern wenches.
There were even advertisements from brothels with signs such as: "Soldier! F£$k today, for tomorrow you may not have the tool for it", amongst a few others.
Zayl was delighted when his food and drink arrived, he removed his headscarf and began to eat.

Much to her repulsed chagrin a quick ask-around did confirm Marons worst fears: that was indeed the only Inn in town. This wouldn't have been muck of a problem if there was also some noble houses in the area: she could've easily gotten a bed there by sheer family name value but no. The most prestigious building was the mayors Villa and that was not only too far away to negotiate a visit at this time, but also too far down the social ladder to even be aware of her. As much as it pained her, only the elite of the elite would be aware of a noble house from far-off Symg. Even one of such high esteem and far-reaching influence as Victoalia. She steeled her resolve as she once again returned to the Inn.

The noise, much like before, was sickening even outside but she didn't let that faze her as she opened the door and stepped inside.

The first thing she notices was the smell. The god-awful smell of way too many humans in way too small an area. Second was the heat. Again a result of way too many humans in way too small an area. These were both bearable if uncomfortable but the worst was the noise. The infernal, ear-shattering noise of shouting and "singing" and "music" and all kinds of sounds that should not have to be tolerated by anyone. But she had to, as much as it pained her. The Inn was however marginally larger than she had feared.

She turned quite a few heads as she walked up to the bar and a number of low-lives attempted to catch her attention which she promptly ignored. Some boy did however get up in front of her but she pushed him back, down on the floor and stepped over the vermin. Frankly, touching the thing was giving it too much attention.

"I would like your finest room for the night and as good a meal as this... establishment can put together"

The bartender looked up for a second and upon seeing her clearly superior status and purse removed the sour look from his face.

"Oh yes, of course, of course! Right this way!" he said, showing her the stairs and shouting back to the staff to prepare something. Maron didn't listen. Hearing what she was going to get beforehand was probably just going to spoil her appetite.

The room was... adequate and she returned with the barkeep down after settling some minor details about payment (the bill was to be sent to her father and the price agreed upon was more than he ever thought possible). To her dismay she discovered there were no empty tables available. There was a small glint of hope however as she discovered to notable figures: Lucy of house Poppitot sitting for herself in one end and Sir David of Dornburg a few tables over. While David was of actual nobility, he was also socially dishonored and a renegade. Not fitting company to one such as her. Besides, the rumors that might spread would be of little use to her. Miss Poppitot on the other hand was not of noble birth and the Poppitots were hardly seen as honourable. But her history with using certain magics intrigued Maron and her presence would not start unbecoming rumors. It wasn't much of a choice she realized and she made her way to the white-haired girl sitting down on the opposite side. The girl didn't seem notice her at first, seemingly entrenched in though. Just as well, as the last thing she needed now was "pleasant conversation".

There is someone near me. Looks noble, perhaps even rich. Hmmm, perhaps-oh, no, you rubbed off too far on me daddy. Still, this could bear fruit, perhaps.

She smiled visibly.

"Your food", the bartender said bitterly.
"Well, you took your bloody time with it."

She winged a few coins at him. He caught them all in one fist, gritting his teeth, he growled lowly.

"Forgive me for saying so, but poor choice in company", he said quietly as he walked away past Maron.

Lucy reached into her pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. She shook it out twice then stuffed the edges in her collar. She wasted no time in devouring her food all the while staring unflinchingly at Maron.

The innkeeper of "The Gilded Horseshoe" was a man in his late forties, balding, sporting a goatee.  His face was wrinkled and a scar was going down his right cheek.  While not overly muscular, the man gave off a "don't mess with me" vibe.
Gulston made his way to the bar where he took a seat and ordered a roast chicken and a tankard of ale.  He offered the coin and then proceeded to eat his meal.

"Say, you look familiar, mercenary", the innkeep said, "Haven't I seen you before?"
Gulston shrugged, "Maybe, I've been all over Karston these past fifteen years."
"I remember the days when I used to be a sellsword;  had a whole group with me, actually", he said, "There was a young lad, who had just arrived to the kingdom.  From the west, if I recall correctly."

The innkeeper was then interrupted by a dark, hooded figure.  After serving his customer, he continued his story, "Where was I...  Oh, yes, the lad!  He said he was from Tribilia, came seeking fortune and glory.  That was about a month before I retired from that ruckus."
"Tribilia, you say?" Gulston asked amusedly, "I'm from Tribilia, and I also came to Karston to make a name for myself.  Was 'Bloody Blade' the name of that particular band?"
"Aye, how did you know?" the barkeep asked, visibly surprised.
"Turns out I was that lad, old man", Gulston smirked, "Small world, eh?"
The man laughed, "By Zhardirs beard!  What happened with the group in the meantime?"
Gulston took a bite of his meal, then replied: "Disbanded after two moons, Jehrey and Stolpes had an argument about how loot should be split.  I went my own way after that."
"That's a shame...  Your name - I cannot recall it-"
"Gulston, Gulston Jarrett", the mercenary quickly said.
"If you need a room, Gulston, I'd be happy to offer one for an old brother-in-arms.  And if anyone in town's giving you trouble - just tell them you're with Walkos."
"Sure thing", Gulston said cheerfully, then finished eating the roast.

After having a glass water (since she does not drink alcohol, nor does she trust much in the dark sludge), Amanda approached the barkeep. She turned around and noticed a lot of folks around, some of which could be her potential allies. She also notices a priest outside the tavern. While she was godless, Amanda knew priests kept the team alive and well.

Just as she was thinking about her plan, she sensed something wrong, for something dark was coming, yet took a form of something very young.

Regardless, she approaches the barkeep: "I'd like to request something. Give that grey man, the swordsman, the woman wearing the large hat and the short woman in green clothes some, ah, milk."

The barkeep is suspicious, but Amanda didn't had that much money to buy some better drink and also didn't want to offend them with that black grunge.

"Er, they seem like interesting people. Anyway, here's your money. (whispers) Hopefully they aren't allergic to lactose.", explained Amanda, as she gave some of her gold away. "Tell them they are sent by a dancing woman."

She steps outside and hopes to convince the bald Hestan priest for a dance.

Besides-" she leaned in just a bit and lowered her voice so only the two of them could hear "-Your, let's say activities, intrigue me. There are not many who can do that sort of thing to entire villages."

She leaned back into the chair. Backrest doesn't even reach my shoulders. How annoying she thought.

She drank some ale.

"I suppose, I should be more disturbed with how well versed you are in my dealings.", she said shrugging. Stabbing another slice of meat she put in her mouth.

The glass of milk was placed right by Zayl.
- What is this?- He asked the barkeep.
- Cow's milk. Some woman ordered it for you, and a few other fellas.
Zayl chuckled.
- Say my good man, how about a little switch? Instead of this, you open us some of your better wine, instead of this half aged vinegar you served us- He reached for his coinpurse and placed some of the local coinage to conpensate the difference in price. The barkeep looked at the milk glass, the small jug of wine, the half eaten lamprey pie, Zayl's serpentine, ice blue eyes and then the coins placed on the bar. Mumbling something under his nose, he went down to the cellar, where the inn kept it's stockpile of drinks. Moments later, he returned with a bottle. The barkeep popped the cork and placed the bottle right besides Zayl, and removed the glass of milk.
Zayl examined the bottle.
- Ah, good old Giselle.- He said while pouring some wine to his goblet. - That wasn't so hard, now was it?- He said with a slight smile.
- Anything else you need? - the Barkeep asked.
- No, not now. - Zayl replied after taking a sip of the wine. He seemed to be enjoying the drink very, very much.

"What's this here?" he asked.
"Milk", Walkos said, "Some young lass told me to get you some.  Said something about a dancing woman."
"I am not amused", Gulston replied, "Tell me, where's my room?"
"Wait, let me check which one is unoccupied...  Right, second floor, down the hallway on the left side.  For you - forty gold coins", the barkeep said.
Gulston took the money out, counted it and put it on the counter.  He then got up and exited the inn.

(( ))

Some fresh air was welcome after that crowded establishment.  The line in front of the recruitment office has shortened, and Gulston thought he should take a place in the row.

Amanda did not believe that of all the people she could make an alliance with, nobody replied and everyone ignored.

"Dang, I did not see this coming. This would've been easier if I was to use potions back home. Was hoping to make at least some impression, but that backfired. *sigh* Maybe some other time, then. I just hope I get to see the next day - alive."

After eating an apple she got after leaving the boat, Amanda noticed a sign about some "rats in a house". She came to the house, where she was approached by an old woman.

"Hello child. You here to take care of the rat problem?"
"Yes, but can you tell me anything specific?" Amanda asked.

"Here's the key to the cellar, where the rats are being found. They came here about weeks ago; the soldiers here are too occupied about the incoming war and nobody here wants to help an old woman. Do not touch anything, child." With that, the old woman shows the door to the cellar.

Inside, Amanda sees a few rats, which she manages to easily burn by casting a few sparks. More rats start arriving, which seem to be bigger by the minute, but all get burned up. Just as Amanda thought everything was fine, the largest, meanest rat appears, who even has white fur and red eyes. Amanda tries to slice it with her longsword, but misses and the rat jumps, slashing her robe. While the robe manages to sew itself, Amanda runs and climbs on a pile of barrels. The rat starts climbing down, but Amanda pushes the barrels down, which squishes the rat. To make sure it is dead, Amanda stabs it with her sword.

Amanda returns to the old woman and reports the task is done.

"Marvellous, child. When I was your age, I was also a spell caster and learned a lot through the ages. But I abandoned my ways and settled here. I do not have the money, but I can give you this." the old woman takes off her bracelet and gives it to Amanda. "Whenever you feel in danger, concentrate on the bracelet and an ally will appear to you. The stronger you get, the greater the ally becomes."
"But don't you need it? It is your bracelet, after all, and you must've mastered its powers already and could've defeated the rats on your own." Amanda states her worries.
"Aye, my child. But I am too old for this world; soon I will depart from this earthly realm. You, however, are quite young and have proven an adventurer. May the bracelet protect you in your travels." With that, the old woman goes back into her house, leaving Amanda confused.

After the brief encounter with the woman, the priest decided to go to the local temple with three objectives, the first being introducing himself to the local clergy, the second gathering some informations on the plight of the land and the third understanding if the locals' irreverence to the faith had something to do with a bad behaviour of the priests there.

Getting there was, once again, not easy, having to deal with uncorteous folk, but in the end Titus finally managed to reach his destination and entered the shrine.
Much to his dismay he found the place in a terrible state, he was starting to fear that his suspicions were well founded.

He talked for long with the head of the temple,  a priest named Podrick who seemed actually very trustworthy and kind, maybe too much, on the line to be mistaken to be a pushover.
During his conversation Titus couldn't learn too much that he already knew about the situation in the island, but understood a crucial thing regarding the behaviour of the townsfolk.
The reason why they mistrusted priests, as Podrick explained, was due to the previous head of the temple, a wicked man, that misused charity money and generally lacked the powers required to do his job as a priest. As such at one point the people burned down the temple while he was still there.
After his death Podrick was sent to take over, but due to his weak will he couldn't convince the populace to return to the temple.

At the end of their conversation Podrick explained that the army needed a priest in the field, and asked Titus to fill in, hoping that he could instill some trust in the townsfolk by doing so.
While initially reclutant Titus accepted, knnowing that moving with the army he would have to deal with more than one terrorized villager needing comfort, and that he could try to stop an eventual marauding action of the army.

As such he left the temple for the recruitment office, with renewed purpose in mind.

Is that what they told her?

"And I dare hazard a guess that that does not answer my question. No matter, I suppose these things will be unveiled in time. Then again, maybe not, who is to say?"

She drank the last of her ale and pushed the milk away from her. She wiped her mouth clean with her handkerchief, returned it to her pocket, and stood up.

"A pleasure making your acquaintance Lady Victoalia, I believe we will get along swimmingly" she said with a big smile. She put her hat on her head and began to head back to her room.
