Politics of Might and Magic

Whatever one might think about Sanders or Trump as politicians, the reason they rose to prominence was the fact that politics had become too stagnant and too uniform. Both parties pursed kinda the same policies (wars, globalization), and many ordinary folks across the spectrum felt that they had no connection to the people who elected them, that they were ruled by corporate interests and lobbyists. The same applies to left- and right-wing populists in European countries like Greece, France, Spain, UK, Sweden, Hungary, Germany and other parts of the world as well.

This is a global trend that can be seen in our dear M&M-franchise as well. With NWC:s destruction and Ashan's introduction, M&M lost its integrity and originality and was turned into a cliché clone of other series, Warcraft, Warhammer, DnD to name a few. My favourite town, the keeper of a grand and unique culture, was turned into a kinky sex dungeon for S&M elves. I've played Baldur's Gate 2 many times and the dark elves and their underworld was presented with some originality there (ahem...) and that's fine but I wanted HoMM to stay HoMM. The same applies to Naga (Warcraft) instead of the Fortress town, Dwarves as their own faction - yes, the very fact that the M&M idea of having factions that are "themes" rather than the stereotype races wasn't respected or simply not even thought about because of greed and global corporate interests. Ubi and their henchmen bulldozed our world, part of our lives, mine at least.

The similarities to RL politics can clearly be seen in our case. So... the question remains, who is our Trump/Sanders person?

H2 Sorceress remains the supreme faction,  but it was a casualty of war to see a great faction like Dungeon transformed into a knock off of Forgotten Realms.

Sorceress was glorious and the H5 & 7 Sylvan are definitely not its successors or even proper HoMM towns. Sorceress/Rampart/Nature wasn't the town of elves - it was the town of nature-aligned creatures. The fact that Ubisoft thought they could just replace it with some bland dull cliché elves was about as respectful of our M&M culture as the Taliban were as they blew up those 1500-year old Buddha statues.

Dungeon, Stronghold, and my beloved Rampart definitely took the biggest beating. The only faction Ubi did right is H5 inferno.

Not sure about Inferno. First of all, all the units look warcraftized. Making the Devil evolve into an "Arch Demon" is just a lack of imagination that makes NWC:s Rust Dragons look imaginative.

Secondly, with the introduction of the Succubus, Olivier Ledroit's apparent obsession for kinky sex fantasies became even more obvious. In Dark Messiah (yeah I confess, I played it...) you could even see you succubi gf's ******.  They replaced a fully viable and original entire race taken from ancient mythology (Gog/Magog, who like efreeti actually weren't kreegans) with demon dominatrixes that exist in every single mainstream fantasy game to make boys going to puberty wanna play. Maybe they used same kind of reasoning as when they blew up Dungeon?

The old Dungeon faction has not totally disappeared; it was just reorganized and now has a unique idea[...] Classical Dark Elves worship spiders, but we replaced spiders with dragons...()

Academy is the only town that was sorta spared by Ubi in H5, and the only town I can play in that game without wanting to shot myself after 5 minutes. Wouldn't be surprised if our favourite Breton actually planned to remove or squash it too. After all it hasn't got an "unique idea" that isn't featured in 10 different other fantasy games, nor is it a race which kids need to have to play something since vague things like "themes" or "philosophies" are to mature for the segment of the market Ubi is aiming for with the fake M&M products.

Ubisoft twisted it into a racial thing. Guess they want to stay with the times

I could never play h5 academy because their units looked absolutely ridiculous to me. The Titans were the worst of it, the Djinns had giant hands but no face...? The mages looked like Jasmine's father from Aladdin and the Gargs...

H5 inferno I liked because of the pit lord, the nightmare, and I thought the succubus was a good addition. It actually looked like a creature unlike the h6&7 version. If the second tier demon was dropped, every unit moved down a tier, and an effreet was put in the 6 tier slot...it would have been perfect.

But everything in h5 looked warcrafty in one way or another.

H5 Djinns are awesome. I love the giant hands and the hat for a face. It showed that they are purely magical creatures and that their anatomy is irrelevant.

I like all of the artwork of H5 Academy really. The Rajas are especially gorgeous. Princess Jasmine's father is cool looking too. I'm still waiting for the day when those giant Sikh hats go into fashion and I can walk down the street in one of them, covered in LED lights and having a speaker hidden in the top to play my jams. Sometime in the late 2030's it is going to happen.

Wasn't excited about the Arabian Nights-theme, but not necessary against it either. On one hand: it felt a bit cliché, on the other the games need variety. The alternate upgrades (always played with those) looked a bit better too, especially the mage. The music was nice too - but that's because they had the same composer as in the real HoMM games, of course.
