How YOU can save the HoMM series

Since we all (well most of us anyway...) to some degree hate what Ubi and their henchmen have done with our game, I'd like to share a few thoughts of how YOU can help save the series. Yes - it is up to YOU to be the Hero this time, not the pixels on your screen. You can accomplish this by following a few relatively simple steps:

- Be persistent in your disapproval and write about it a lot. Persistently mention the three or four things you don't like about the game(s). Like: Ashan, race-based towns, loads of bugs and Uplay. I guarantee you: there ARE staff people reading this at Ubi or whatever underlings they work with right now. Especially the designers. Think of a director guy with a huge ego, say a guy named after a certain ethnic group in France for example. Such a fellow is prone to be searching forums such as ours regularly for mentions of his own name. Let's reward him with a veritable shock!

- The big business people Ubi might not know much about making games, but they do think a lot about consumer reactions and polls. Because that's how they think they're gonna earn money. Write negative reviews whenever you can, on as many web sites as possible. This can be done on Steam for example. They don't have to be long or particularly thoughtful or in depth as long as they're not completely devoid of it. The message needs to be clear though: Ubi - stop ruining the Heroes series!

- Boycott, boycott, boycott. Don't buy the Ubi games. Especially not the DLC:s. Play them on an internet café or at a friend's computer who have them to get an impression of what they are like so you can write negative reviews. If desperate - you can buy the game, write a negative review and then refund it on Steam.

- Don't fall for their B. S. They can hire legendary fans like Marzhin for show for all they want, they can create "shadow councils" of fans to vote for one of Erwin's ideas or another. We all know what it means in the end: nothing. Erwin is going to get what he wants anyway. They show the ideas that these "fan councils" rejected will be showed down out throats in the expansions instead.

- Expose their lies. We all know that Ubi and their underlings often like to lie a lot, sound like they care about the fans when they don't, promise stuff that they're never going to deliver. Unfortunately, they often talk so much crap that it's hard to find sources for what's been said and where. Record their lies, save them to a document on your computer and share with like minded fellows. verriker did a terrific job with this recently.

- Buy other games. There are many terrific strategy games and fantasy-themed mods to such, like Endless Legend, Civ, Ck2, ESO, TW: Warhammer, Stellaris to name a few. Use the "vote" you have as a consumer. This is the kind of language Ubi listens too.

- Introduce younger fans to the real M&M world. HoMM 3 is still one of the best turn-based strategy games ever made, which Ubi obviously knows as shown by their lousy HD edition. We who played the game(s) around the time when they where still kind of fresh are growing older, and we need to guide the younger generation into realizing the genius of JVC and the universe he built. And for the Dragon Father's sake, don't forget about the older M&M games, who reveal a lot about the lore behind the old world. They can be tricky to run on newer machines, but there are a few relatively easy workarounds (compatibility mode has worked for me at least).

- Make alternative HoMM games. This will require some skill, a lot of time and perhaps an investment on people's behalf. Making successful mods based on the real M&M universe is certainly not impossible, it has already been done with Civ 3. This will be a way to keep the real M&M universe alive while HoMM and M&M is suffering under Green Spider Vampire Dragon-occupation. Contact the original NWC people and remind them that we still love them. Perhaps dare ask them for ideas or inspiration. There are still many mysteries to be resolved regarding the true M&M universe, where the real H5 would take place, for example. And what happened to all the characters we so loved?

great post man, very much agreed with every single point,
albeit I would say most of the forum members came to these same conclusions independently by now and are already doing several of these things, also it looks very unlikely Team Erwin will continue in any event because of Vivendi buyout lol

Thanks man! I really hope that's the case.

Can we be sure that this is really happening though? Last thing I read, it sounded like Ubi (sadly) will manage to stop it?

there are mixed opinions on that, sounds like Vivendi would still have the ability to price them out unless it's really big, so I think the next update we hear will be decisive lol

I'd like to add that for those who want to learn more about the old world(s) and introduce younger fans to them, http://ancienthomeofdragon.homestead.com/ is a great site to catch a scent of the real M&M thing. Hope it continues to stay online.

Think about it, back then HoMM actually had a fanbase who wrote short stories and had passionate discussions about the game world. While obviously no one feels passionately about Green Spider Goddess Dragons - except how much we hate them of course...

Good site. See it.
I think we can build new games and repair old like eg. MMIX and Heroes IV.
We have MMEditor by Grayface and we can do new MMVI-VII style games.
Xeen Editor give us chamce build in III-V style.
Modding HII,III is still continued. Maybe HI style?
We have mods for other games with use MM World.
Good thing will be building freeware game based on MM but another styles.
Thats are some options...

You don't say, the h6 and h7 foras are both dead, there is not one single strategy thread, not a tournament, no maps that gathered attention, only a few Namtaru apologists dropping by from time to time trying to recommend this wreck of a game to random people.

Heroes III now has plenty of fanmade towns, countless scenarios and mods, a top quality Forge Town finally saw the day, there is several motivated and competent fan teams still working on this game, and that is stronger than mere nostalgia.

I wish Ubi had realized when it was still time the game was not about what they thought it was. Now it's dead, peace to its soul, may it be not get raped any further.

Sorry for the bump.

I hate to say it, but I agree.
I rather have more expansions/chronicles to HoMM 3, 4 or even 2, than the current versions being produced. Anything past H4 does not look, feel or sound like Heroes to me. H4 was the expansion that stood on the knife's edge, but efter that I lost interest.

The only thing that is great in V are the mechanics -allegedly TotE has the best mechanics of the series- the rest (aside townscreens I guess) is a miss. It doesn't show much ten years later, but many weren't appealed by V. For some because of the awful implementation of the 3D, others because of optimization making single-play tedious with over-exaggerated AI turns lengths, others like me  because of the art direction, etc.

You already heard me say it multiple times back in the Shadow Council, that game was saved by its mechanics, the rest is alien to the series.

One could argue against what you say, but one where young and inexperienced with the world when V came out. Though considering V was the first Heroes game developed by the new developers, one could suppose that the initial flaws where understandable.

However, the point still stands. V was flawed, but in the end (and with the expansions) it still stands as one of the greatest entries in the series. You certainly can't claim it to be a bad game.

Heroes 5 may be a fine Heroes now with the fan mods, Quantomas patch and next gen hardware but let's not retcon it, that was a travesty nearly as bad as the Erwin stuff on release and still way subpar performance with memory leaks and bad AI even with TotE, plus the bad graphics world and campaign were never patched to be good and all continue to suck lol

everyone was ready to move on and hyped for Heroes 6 to take series to the next level, alas unfortunately as we all know that was a big smelly train wreck of poo lol
