Looking for some map recomendations

Hi guys. I'm looking for some HoMM3 map recommendations. I've played a bunch of those I found in 'recommendation threads' before, but they're all rather old, so maybe something new is up, but is skipping my radar? HotA preferred, but anything goes.

Also, if you know of any Let's Plays of difficult maps, do link! Me likes. And me cannot find. Only poor lonely Metataxer with narration ;(

What sort of maps I'm looking for:

1. maps with some gimmicks and original thought/concept would be awesome. I love those and that's what I'm primarily looking for. Riddles etc = awesome.

2. not too much text, unless it's funny. Some is more than fine, I like roleplaying maps, but not an in-game book, please. I'm too impatient for that when I'm playing a game.

3. no RNG-reliant battles. Challenging can be very nice, but reloading 10-80 times to get morale/no fear/whatever is REALLY not for me.

4. no time limit defeat setting, too much pressure D:

5. unless it's some original, quirky concept, then not too easy. I want to think a little and have a reason to do my best.

Also, I had an odd problem with a nice map I played lately - Ringing for Victory. I couldn't reach some places with water walking because of signs/objects blocking the shores. What's up with that? Could anyone tell me what could be the problem? I had to take a bonus hero and cheat all spells onto her just to complete some of the necessary quests

THANK YOU!!

I know that feeling, when you cannot reach some place with water walk, especially when you are 2 much advanced in the map, and there's nothing you can do, besides start the map from scratch, or, if you lucky, have a saved game before the place get obstructed.

Happened to me on the map "Empire of the World II". That's something the author should be careful when making the map, leave at least 2 or more squares free to land.

In relation to the maps... you got pretty restricted demands ^^
All i know is the good old maps considered the very best of user made maps, but you probably know them already.

I think is more easy for you to tell the list of what you played, rather than wait for people to tell you maps that you might not know.

But old map are the best. When H3 was a his peak of popularity (20 - 15 years ago), there were best mapmaker. It's no use to snooze nose that something is old.

About new map: HotA's Trillion Isle's Ultimate Edit has good reviews.

Hey, very interesting post. I want to see some nice challanging maps with those 1-5 rules same as you!
I can recommend you Wayfarer, but there's some better options. Try also Lord of the Rings, very intresting map, not that challanging, but awesome, if you like LotR!

Kurgadako's Apocalypse looks fine for me too, but I am steal playing (High Level) and even publishing it on Yt with commentary (english). So feel free to check it out, maybe you'll enjoy. Also, I am playing without ANY restarts, reloads, even when I lost 60% of my army ..., but map looks intresting. Please write your favourites maps, I am looking for some good same as you !

Hey, thanks for the replies (though so few! ;( )

@krakken
The bug I got didn't have to do with creatures spawning though, it was more like an invisible block that I simply couldn't click on the hex of free ground where I ought to go.

Feel free to list you favorite maps that fit those points anyhow

@avatar
I don't discard old maps instantly, but I really like some HotA innovations and WoG shenanigans SoD maps are obviously fine, but for instance I played the Eternal Love campaign and it did feel like it aged quite a bit compared to the newer maps that utilize similar tricks but in refined ways. Not saying all old maps fall behind though, obviously

@tyranuxus
I've seen a playthrough of Wayfarer on-line actually and it seems that the map can be pretty difficult or stupidly easy. The playthrough showed the latter. All you gotta do is wait around to gather a big enough army to move forward and there's no challenge in anything.

After playing HoMM for a while I really appreciate maps that don't rely on blind-resurrection and/or archangels. There's only so many times that can be enticing Which is why I'm going around asking in hopes of hearing about some fun-concept original kind of map

Last map I played and liked a whole bunch was "Running with the Devil". It wasn't very difficult, but I liked the design and the story a lot. Had a blast. "Ringing of Victory" was pleasant, there's a fun and quite original map for WoG "Art War: Heroes Charge". And then of course "The Empire of the World 4", but that's half-HoMM half-something else, way too much new stuff for me I fear. Maybe one day

I seem to recall playing a nice map "Dragon in My Heart" long long time ago. But I remember having huge issue with some necromancer or whatever coming out of the underground at some day and totally rekking me. I don't know if I played that bad or if it bugged or anything. But I think I liked it? Unsure anymore.

I actually went ahead and played "Sander's Folly", though it's quite plot heavy. It was worth it, really nice map, so I can heartily recommend it. Together with a friend we also just finished "Last Hope" and "THUNK" for WoG. First one very difficult on 200%, the second awesomely scripted and well-thought out, though rather easy. "The Empire of the World 2 ERA edition" is fun if you challenge yourself to defeat enemies on higher level and now we're slowly starting the "Ice Arrow". Will see how it goes.

And I'm still looking for recommendations

Just gonna toss in some random maps

Unleashing the bloodthirsty (SoD)

http://www.maps4heroes.com/forum/opinions.php?game=3&map_id=1408
This is Legion 9 (Hota)

http://www.maps4heroes.com/forum/opinions.php?game=3&map_id=1387
The Imp (Armageddons blade, puzzle map)

http://www.maps4heroes.com/forum/opinions.php?game=3&map_id=1227
Castle Dracula (Hota)

http://www.maps4heroes.com/forum/opinions.php?game=3&map_id=1256
From the depths of hell (Hota)

Personally i'm no fan of enormous huge long maps so most maps i share are not that big (except the first two).

Each of the maps have a completely different scenario so at least one of them is bound to be what you like :-)

For more great challenging maps (like a few you already mentioned) I'm sure a lot of people around here are more experienced then I am with those maps. in Maps for heroes like from maps made by
Valery
Nautilus
Auquas Marine (do i wrote that correctly).

I also know community members from here like Salamandre and Biobob (and others) made some great pieces....You can always try to send them a private message (sorry if you get spammed now guys .

Have fun!

Hey, thanks for posting. I'll take a look at these maps. I actually recall playing "The Imp" map, and I think I also played one "The Imp" map for HoMM4 Or maybe that HoMM4 just started with an imp. Either way, I liked both.

I do not want maps like those Nautilus makes, from what I've seen they're the epitome of "reroll till RNGesus is on your side" and battles that last forever while you have to kite stuff around/reload bajillion times to figure out one pixel movement. I've read through a bunch of the Metataxer's Revenge walkthrough, and while it's fun to see someone explain the mechanics and tricks in there, the only way for me to experience such maps would be a Let's Play while I sit back and munch on something while someone else is playing

From the Depths of Hell is a tiny map, no? About constant invasions from underground and having to defend one's castle. Not so much for me, tiny maps gotta have puzzles/fun plots/tons of Erm scripts etc. Guess we've different tastes here I don't even browse S-M sized maps unless some fancy shenanigans are ahead. I want to explore, grow, pimp up my hero and all

As a side note, I believe Valery is actually Salamandre.

Thanks for sharing once more

Hi, I can't make a new thread so I'm hijacking this one, hope you don't mind. Also looking for map recommendations. I want a challenge, but not an absurd one (like hour-long battles consisting of making forcefields over and over).

For example, I found "From the Depths of Hell" very enjoyable, with both combat and and logistics requiring some effort to get right, but no gimmicks or mechanics-abuse required to succeed.

HotA, ERA, SoD all fine.

Thanks!
