An unusual adventure map

Hello everyone!

Recently I have begun and am continuing the construction of a map that is not your regular H3 map at all. It is kind of a role playing map with a storyline, where the player has to work their way through a series of challenges. These challenges will not only test your knowledge of the game, but your general all-round logic as well. Now, it is still far from finished, I intend to include 20-30 challenges, and so far only 4 is ready. But having said that, it is already playable so I decided to share it with the community, so that you can provide useful ideas, corrections, suggestions and a lot more. All the information you'll need is provided for you in the map, just start playing and read every message that pops up. This is a Shadow of Death map, no HoTA is required. The map is still in pre-alpha stage, but can already provide a good 15-20 minutes of entertainment. Just to be doubly sure, I'll present the basic rules and attributes of the map here:

-This is an adventure map with a roleplay-style background story, designed to test the player's problem solving ability and knowledge on Heroes 3 gameplay, rules and mechanics.
-You cannot save the game when in a challenge. If you die or unable to continue, you have to reload at the beginning of that particular challenge. You can save the game after succesfully completing a challenge.
-After completing the currently existing 4 challenges, be sure to write a post here; any suggestions, constructive criticism, ideas, etc. are welcome. Also, any feedback on how much you liked or disliked it is much appreciated too.

Note: This is my first custom map that I'm making, so probably you'll find some amateur mistakes in the design, but some details are still under construction. These things include the object placement on the map, the exact details of the background storyline and some minor other things.

The download link to the map: https://www.dropbox.com/s/u5l5a3div1gnjd4/challenge%20map.h3m?dl=0

Thank you and enjoy

EDIT: IMPORTANT! Do not open the file in the map editor, it will most likely spoil your fun. Just copy it into the maps directory and start toplay it.

Oh yeah, sorry my bad. It is more about game mechanics, basic and not so basic rules that govern the game, and facts that a player should know to properly play the game. I shouldn't have put lore there at all

Got it. I might stand a chance then, but should you ask me what bearded dude took the throne after a previous bearded dude I'd be donezo.

EDIT: Playing Challenge 1. Good to see a nice English and neat formatting. I'll add any typos found since I'm already reading through.

#1: first text - typo in word 'chance'. [your only chane]

#2: nooo! time limit! my ultimate HoMM Nemesis D: I fail maps just because I KNOW the time limit is there and glaring at me each time I click the hourglass... D:<

#3: you a word -> "If you die or unable to continue"
#4: successfully missing 1 s
#5: DARKNESS missing a K, and LabYrinth, I believe

#6: it's a little bit difficult to tell which parts of the labyrinth can be crossed simply due to some objects being more obviously blocks and some stones/cracks looking rather passable on View Earth (and some grass marks looking like obstacles actually)
^ this caused me to reload 1 time [and count on my guesswork being right a few times more]

Question: How do you intent to keep the player from saving/loading? I checked, I could load mid-maze normally. Is it just telling the player how to play this fairly? Or is there some fancy trick to it?

<onto challenge 2>

Thank you Nightshine, I am already taking notes I didn't even notice those typos, yet I've carefully looked for errors in the spelling, clearly haven't found all
And, no, that save game rule can be broken no problem, no fancy tricks involved, it's up to the player's sense of honour to play by that rule

x) typo, "you have heared" [heard]

Hmm...

First thought:
the monster grid is showing what monster sits in which pandora's box since they both seem to be similar rectangles. I tried to open the halfling one, but found an Arch Devil inside it. Caused me to reload.

Thoughts to follow:
- no Arch Devils in the monster box so can't just treat it as another edge
- checked if any of the monsters had smaller stack - no.
- the clue said Snake Slithers, Panther Sneaks, Dove ?. No idea what it means for now. No snakes, panthers, or doves in sight.

Then:
- dove flies, gargoyle flies: ok
- serpent fly = snake: ok
- panther?? nothing sneaky around either
- panther and boar have 4 legs and fur...: not ok
reload

So:
- idk, is harpy sneaky, because it goes back? unconvinced, but: ok
- no more clues? should I go from the start? then sprite, because it flies: ok
- dragon is not a snake, but hey...: ok
- cerberi panther?: not ok
reload

And so:
- is it all above the damn dove?? everything I picked still flew, did the snake troll me? is it just fliers? >>SERPENT<< FLY Y U DO DIS, Y U TRICK ME: ok
I feel dumb

Challenge #3:
x) Antag[a]rich typo I think? I'm not sure that 'a' should be there.

OH NO, GUARDIANS OF >LORE<. IM DOOM :9

Hmmm..........
Hmm........
I know beholders take 1 of each.
I know dragons are sulfur based.
I know gems are the domain of Castle and Tower both of which are good-oriented towns.
Mercury is Inferno and Necropolis = evil, duh.
Crystal... meh, it's crystal.
I'm going with gems.
AYAYAYAY.
Reload

Damn crystal. My logic failed me.

Bah, I know Angels grow in size. They decimated my archers-behind-forcefield just last week by squeezing in with their surprisingly narrow very un-archangely butts!

Uhm. Either Griffin or the Fire Elemental. Conflux is all jumbled up with their elemental upgrades, but I'm gonna go with Griffin, because I seem to recall you need 3 of those human towers before Griffins. Haven't played Castle with brain in a long time though.

D:<
Is this...
...is this..
for real
...MATH?!
Why

Ergh. Expert armorer... I know archery goes 10-20-30, offense goes 5-10-15... 20 level Tazar with Expert Armorer...
20, 25 or 30
I think Armorer goes 5-10-15 as well since it applies to all creatures. He'd get 3 or 5% per level. so 15+20x3or5? What do I even...
I'm sorry, I can't into math!

Hmm. Sacrifice is more likely to appear in Evil towns, I think? Or is it just can/can't situation and no chance % involved?
But then again I'm pretty sure Sacrifice can't appear in good-aligned towns at all. Tower is one of them.
Also, that'd be a cruel piece of math otherwise.

I don't believe hero specialties hastening their creatures apply to the movement speed. Just creature's basic speed+terrain preference.
WRONG. Reload.
So then Mullich if I stand by what I think I know.
WRONG. I know nothing, confirmed!

I think it's the tile you step on that counts since it makes the sound. Yes, that's my way of thinking!
Yes, that's the wrong way of thinking!
Reload

Test ground for question 8? What's that? Hm.
OH OH OH! I know this one! I saw this in Metataxer Revenge! It goes from the top, right?
RIGHT. YES. I'M SO GOOD.

Hm. I'd say just one works, but then again, mom's spaghetti. I'm going with the bug version.
Wow. Damn, well kudos to HoMM3 makers then. Not the bug.
Second guess was supposed to be the wrong one again, but random pathing saved me so I didn't have to reload again (even though I deserved to).

Visiting hero does not sit behind the walls so I believe it's just a normal combat where you can escape/surrender.
Oky.

x) typo-ish thingie, "staying here with me and becom[ing]", since we're inging.

CHALLENGE #4

x) messenger missing 1 s

Ayyy... Lizardman Apocalypse! I really need the Safe-SoD thingie. Might want to mention it in the starting text for other scrubs like me who don't have it.

The monolith maze seems rather easy/not requiring any movement from gray cells. Maybe because some portals are inactive.

Well either way, it looks like a fun beginning to a fun map. I'll sure give the full thing a go when it's up!

Take care, hope my notes will be of some use

Once again, your points are much appreciated You have pointed out some major flaws in the design and spelling, so I thank you for that Absolutely useful, I'll definitely implement the changes you've suggested. Yes, I agree, challenge 4 isn't really difficult, mainly because there are many one-way portal exits. I'll see what I'll do about it, maybe it's good as it is, you know, the player deserves a breeze of fresh air after 3 daunting challenges

Oh by the way, if you have an idea for a challenge, please send me a HCM with the description and details. I'd rather you don't make a post about it here in this thread, because it would serve as a future spoiler to any reader. Also, feel free to keep the feedback coming

New version available

Hi everyone!

A new, second version of the map is now available at this link. The map now features 8 challenges, several problems have also been corrected, altough some typos might still be out there

If you are unfamiliar with the history of this map, please read trough this thread.

As always, any feedback, suggestions, or perhaps even new challenge ideas are much appreciated. I know I'm being slow with the mapmaking, but my PhD studies don't really allow me to be any faster, so I'd like to apologise to anyone who have read this thread and is looking forward to the release, I promise it's coming.

Also, I'd like to point out, this is my first attempt at mapmaking, there is no fancy stuff involved, just vanilla map editor with Shadow of Death, no scripting, no extra objects, no fancy graphics modifications, no nothing. Still, I'd say the map is capable of providing you with about an hour of entertainment. The storyline and the map objects (trees, rocks, mountains) are still being developed.

When the map is finished, I'll make a post about it in the MapHaven forums.

Thank you in advance for anyone willing to try it, or providing any feedback. Enjoy

EDIT: The link has been edited to direct you to the correct map file, sorry for the inconvenience, my bad

<(^0^)>

On it!

EDIT: as I go, once more. The Sprite I got should have a name and a story. Did she? I don't recall, didn't re-read the first challenges. But if she doesn't then she should! She's on this journey with me

#5
Akh, the Shrouds. Hate the Shrouds. But not more than math, no. Let's go!

There's talk about my "army" and "troops" before the tower. I only got the Sprite. Should I have more? If not that seems a little silly

Spotted one Scholar instantly, he said he's the 2nd one. Looking for first (though not necessary anymore I guess, since I got 3 castles... but I'm sleepy and I forgot what I was getting the castles for actually )

Left the Necro maze. I think it could use some time pressure here, else it's very easy. I guess that's why there's the time-loss victory condition Makes sense. For this and for the portal part too.

#6
text - there's a ninja " inside the word "well".

Gold Golem fight:
- started with magic arrow doing 6 dmg
- strategy first thought: wait-hit without counter-kite away-wait rinse and repeat with arrows.
- well, so much for the arrows xD Got whole two in!
- it worked, obviously, but it took a while with my amazing 1-2 damage per turn

I will try to avoid clues now before the following battles (won't read any text) and see what happens.

Sharpshooter said something, but I skipped afraid of clues. He joined. Not touching the signpost.

Sharpshooters:
Attempt 1: killed one with Magic Arrow, shot at another, the other two rekt my guy. Thought to block one of them with Sprite after waiting, but didn't get the change before my guy died. Obviously I don't want to lose either him or the Sprite. Let's think.

Attempt 2: flew with the Sprite forward, having to count on RNG letting her survive one hit, but they didn't want to shoot her. I'm using the Spirit of Opression, obviously, don't like RNG (still got some since SShooter can deal 10 damage and Sprite has 9 hp with elixir).

Attempt 3: examining stuff. I don't see a way not to die without Shooters getting crap damage RNG and letting mine live. Will check the signpost in a moment.

Oh, there are no clues in the text or the plaque Just the items. Well, I'm not sure how I can win this without losing anyone. But he's a dirty bandit so I guess I will let him die. Not much choice!

Still lost though. Two magic arrows, sprite got killed in melee by the 3rd guy. Let's try defending instead? Nah, our bandit gets rekt during defense too. And so does sprite. With 5 HP she cannot survive anything there.

Going back to Necro territory. Maybe I missed something.
...doesn't seem so. Can't find the second scouting scholar either, by the way.

I do not know how to win this battle D: Shame on me. Grand shame, but I seem to be missing something. My shooter has 17 hp, cannot withstand two shots, my sprite cannot withstand even one. There's no morale to speak of for us since we've got 2 types of creatures. No idea. I will need a hint if I am to progress another day

Hmm, interesting. Your sharpshooter should be able to withstand 2 shots, I've paid close attention to this, it shouldn't be RNG-based. Maybe I'll add an extra Ring of Health to be doubly sure.

You say the second scholar was too easy to spot? OK, maybe I'll rethink their position (SPOILER ALERT: the first scholar is in the very first challenge, once you are at the very bottom of the correct path,  try going towards the upper-right corener instead of the lower.)

Also, I've just now noticed an error in challenge 7. This error makes it unplayable unfortunately You can open it in map editor to see what it's all about, you can get an idea of what will happen there While you are there, you can place a random red hero after challenge 7 and restart the map, that way you can at least properly try challenge 8, it won't need the original hero don't worry

Ah, I actually skipped the first challenge this time. Others were easy to redo so I didn't want to risk having 'unprepared' hero, but I placed him at start beside the gate that takes away the tome.

Shooter wise, that's strange, because even ring of health wouldn't help mine. I was playing on HotA, but I don't think they changed that? He has base 15 health, 17 with the ring. He gets shot by 8-10 damage each time he's smacked, the shooters in my game hit him twice with 9 which gives 18 damage and he's rip. Would need to roll two times 8 damage, but that's RNG and I think HD mod doesn't allow it (it's set to keep the same rolls/morale etc I heard).

I don't want to spoil myself a challenge, I'll just wait for a corrected version of the map and start from after the gold golem
