A different setting

The heroes series have a history of being set in more or less classical medieval fantasy settings, with kngihhts, elves, and what not. Though imaging if it was set during classic area?

The knight faction would be replaced by a greek/roman imperial faction, possibly with units like legionaries and hoplites.

The wizard faction could be based of ancient egypt with anubites and sphinxs to spice up the mix of the classic mages and golems. It could also be set in the oracle of delphi.

The nature faction would obvious take it's inspiration from the drudic/celtic culture, though rather than elves there could be a bigger focus on fairies.

The barbarian faction could be based of norse tribes, perahbs with a little viking in it.

For sanctuary, I have only one word. Atlantis.

Well this would not be that much different than what we currently have, except for changing a few races/cultures around.

Though now I kinda want a asian-themed Necropolis

Here's an idea, instead of trying to (sort of) base towns on past cultures, why not try, say, inventing some cultures. F.E. I've got an idea for a matriarchal culture with mixed Roman/Medieval Europe architecture and their top tier unit is a phoenix.

I'm actually a fan of this idea, it may have a rather interesting things if done right.

They dipped their toes in h6/h7 with praetorian/leggionaire, but the execution was rather dissapointing, they were Roman only with the names and the design was still medieval high fantasy. Griffins are from Greek mythology too, so they could add more greek mythic beings too, Pegasus riders, wise centaurs that are more like Charon, Greek sphinxes could work too.

Sumerian/Babylonian wizard faction all the way, Egypt should be saved for necropolis. The way they executed the Sumerian theme for h6/h7 necropolis was atrocious, but it could work better for wizards (however, knowing ubi they will just fail at it regardless). You have genies, animated lamasu statues (with a more mythological accurate design, not the ugly wannabe undead manticore). Even hindu themes could work for a wizard faction. For Egyptian necropolis you got a lot of creatures too, I would love to see an Ammit for necro, it would fit the death theme very well. Anubites, mummies (maybe even mummified animals ) as well as some generic undead but Egyptian themed (skeletal chariots ) would also work well.

H1 and H2 had a celtic spin in the sorceress faction with sprites and druids (including the druid's dwelling). I'm all for it, also let's not forget that elves in Norse myths are more like fairies/wisps than Tolkien elves.

You could also have germanic tribes, nomadic Turkic people, maybe even Thracians/Dacians. But the Roman/Greek faction would consider anyone but themselves, barbarians , so you can have a Carthage inspired "barbarian" faction with elephants.

Ancient China could work too, even Phoenicia.

To be honest, I prefer current (not only Ashan) setting in fantasy.

Nevertheless, as an idea, it sounds interesting.
Japan empire would be also possible for Sanctuary.

Hmm, you got some fair points, especially about the egyptian being saved for necropolis (TOMB KINGS! ) and wizards being Sumerian/Babylonian. Though I would still stick with the vikings, because trolls.

Hmm, would be logical. Though I would probably keep of the far east until I can figure out a good concept for atleast two factions.

Regardless, I shall get to work a bit on this, probably using the classic 7 tier system.

I don't think it's necessary for factions with a certain theme to be limited to creatures of the same theme. Trolls don't HAVE to be in the viking faction for example and neither do Centaurs HAVE to be in the greek faction.

But it would make a lot of sense for a troll to be in a viking faction and a centaur in a greek faction. Do consider the whole idea is that each faction is based more around a certain ancient culture and their mythology than anything else.

IF the theme is that of the original culture, sure. But i don't find that to be a fitting approach for heroes. Instead I prefer factions to be based around concepts or more intangible themes such as Life, chaos, Order etc. Where the creature's original theme or purpose is more important than it's culture of origin. What does the troll stand for? Or another example: what is the Jotun supposed to be really? It's easy to say it's just a giant or a powerful warrior but the truth is noticeably more complex than that: Jotun are personifications nature.

Specifically untouched and wild nature. Wild forests, vast oceans and unused stone. From a thematic standpoint, Jotun fits better together with Sylvan or a nature faction.

So if you want to have specifically a VIKING stronghold, ask what the theme for that will be. If it is still "might makes right", what creatures fit that mindset and how would they work with a viking aesthetic? Only using norse myth creatures is not necessarily wrong per se but I feel it misses what made past factions so memorable.

Alternatively you could have the nature town be Viking inspired as nature was very important in norse myths.

See this is a very good point, though I will allow myself to add a few things.

Saying the jotunn fits the nature faction is like adding a cerberus to the warlock faction by the logic "it's a dark and nasty creature". While on the surface that is true, it is not taking into account the mythology and origin. Back to the Jotunn, they are creatures of the wild and untamed aspects of the world, yes. However, when taken the general role of the creatures, that of the brustish, uncivilised arch-enemies of the gods, it makes more sense for them to be placed in alliance with an barbarian faction, especially with a norse theme.
A sidenote to the jotunn thing, I perfer this interpretation of the Jotunn, with three subtypes:
The jotunn, connected to frost and storms
The bergrisi, connected to stone and mountains
The Muspell, connected to fire and very hot things.

Thematicly, what I have in mind for the viking/barbarian faction is the idea of "raiders from the north". A faction of "barbarian" and warriors from the north infamous for raiding the southern lands and coasts. A bit of trading once in a while too. Though mainly their creatures follow the same theme as the classical barbarian, with consideration of the norse theme (no cavalry)

As for a viking inspired nature town, lets say that is partially something I'm working on in another sideproject.

The cerberus is not so much "dark and nasty" as much as it's "A loyal guardian and companion" so the warlock faction is indeed not a good fit It's a actually a pretty interesting example. As a guard it needs something to guard and that should preferably be something we don't want to face, hence why it works so well with evil factions despite not being an evil creature. It also didn't end up in dungeon which it would have (and might suit better at first glance) if factions were primarily based on specific cultures but instead with the Demon/hell faction as a guard dog. It'd be easy to put it in dungeon as another experiment but it's thematic ideals mattered more and it found a more fitting home for it (though it's a shame it's "evil" despite probably being the nicest character in greek myth).

man, I just want a stave church.

Well it was just an comparison of what I meant with the jotunn might seem to fit the nature faction taken the "wild and untamed nature" thing, without considering that they were generally pretty brutal and nasty guys. Generally. Though Cerberus would actually fit well in necropolis.

Yeah, a stave church would be pretty epic. Wanna incorprate it into the formentioned sideproject of mine, though still debatable under which role. Regardless, not the place to debate that.
