I'm disappointed

So disappointed, in fact, that I don't even feel like making those old "I'm disappoint" joke (feel free, mvass). And for once I'm not joking either.

Most of you know as the grumpy oldtimer carrying a torch for the old days (and Pandora). And that is accurate. I don't know most of you as well as I knew guys from my generation and its harder for me to enjoy this place as much as I used to back then. But there was something else too. I noticed that the Tavern looks different than it used to. Today it's mostly comprised of themed threads like soccer and manga or compilation threads - comics, funny vids etc. All fine threads by themselves, but none of them help us interact as the community which is what the Tavern is for in my eyes. I thought complaining about it while shaking my stick at the younglings, but then I remembered that every couple of years there is a dry spell in the community, a sort of winter if you would, that usually takes place between the releases of Heroes games. Each time that happened someone would say how the place isn't what it used to be and others would rightfully berate them for talking about it and doing anything to change it themselves. So I decided to shut up and do something.

I knew there are tons of good community games buried in the past, so I started going through the archives to see what's worth of reviving. My best find was the "What do you see in the picture" thread. So I dug it up and ran it again. Once it was well on its way I also got out the "Don't tell the truth" thread. The idea was to revive a thread and keep it running enough time to gain momentum, pass the reigns to someone else and revive another thread. Repeat until the Tavern becomes a center of activity. Except this is where I hit a snag. When I finally had enough of the picture thread no one stepped up. That thread had been going on and off for years and while it sometimes died of inactivity or the judge having no time, I can't recall a time when it was at its peak and died abruptly because no one would run it. There were about ten people each round and judging by the final score many were there for most of the season which lasted 20 rounds. And while I understand that some people have too much on their plate as it is, I find it hard to believe that out of all of the participants no one could devote half an hour a week to judge the entries and find a new pic (bonus point to celf for at least trying making another round, even he made it clear he won't be making more and he still haven't judged the entries).

I was going to revive the Mafia thread and possibly the HC Member competition and maybe even something new, but now I just don't feel like doing any work if I'm the only one willing to do it.

*sigh*

I can't believe I got myself out of my elderly semi-slumber for this.
Peace out.

No doubt HC was doing better during h3 and tote, two poo titles in a row will of course have a negative impact on the community. Considering how bad h7 is after h6 fiasco, I'm happy some nice and respectable folks from the past are still around.

Ps. I thought of reviving the picture thread but have no idea how to judge, I would need more rounds to get more familiar with it.

Well, for what's worth, I already attempted a thread about RL funny/silly/amazing moments which I thought would catch on quickly, but it just didn't. Admittedly it was in the OSM, but it could've as well fit in the Tavern. It's just that people aren't interested.

Looks like the bad games releases have a bad impact on the community as well. Hope things will get better, even if it's not the way it looks.

pretty much mate, unfortunately the low activity (and bad activity) is just an inevitable consequence of getting crappy games, bear in mind this is a forum for Heroes and traffic for the irrelevant boards still has to be lured through that lol

it's a bit like one of those twisted cynical fairy tales you might see,
where all the happy fuzzlers or tellytubs or whatever are all frolicking in peace and fun in their fields of gold, wouldn't harm a fly, until the Dark Erwin comes along and abuses their good nature, banishes and kills them, or turns them into trolls, drunkards and warped cocaine abusers lol

Oh! Tell me more about that fairy land that was the forum before it became a drugs addicts squat lol.

Maybe it's just phases. Sometimes people have time and passion for participation, where the activity flourishes, and somtimes it's the reverse.

Seriously? Friggin' seriously?!
No, you are not putting this on Ubi. Not this. This is a community matter and has nothing to do with them.

If there were no members or no participation, then you would be correct. Like I said, there are dry spells like these every couple of years where people hardly post anything. But this is different. There are a lot of active members, a lot of posting, a lot of general participation. Just very little responsibility, very little effort, very little willingness to actually contribute and do something for the community instead of just floating about.

You, verriker, are more active than myself. As is Galaad. Even AlHazin is on my level of activity, even though he's just joined. You're all here, you're all participating. The new games did not take that away from you. The question is: how are choosing to participate? And that is not up to Ubi, that is up to you.

Well sure, but I think that those who have joined the community for the game advice, tactics... etc. may have left, and only those who really valorize it stay, and enjoy participating cause they created ties with members that go beyond the game itself.

aye but well you see mate I was never like yourself, I am a bad member, a piece of collateral damage from Ubisoft's screw ups, similar to Nigel Farage if the games weren't bad I wouldn't even exist here to complain about them lol

unlike yourself who probably came here in a positive spirit when the game was good or had much promise, and thus you stuck around, I have come along at a very opposite and cynical moment when the series was close to dying and is now dead,
thus it's not really in my nature as a user to prop up the community all sunshine and rainbows, especially when that would feel a bit artificial now that Heroes is officially dead, well not to mention that I'm also busy enough with contributing to actual playable mods for the old games as well instead of posting the throwaway memes, chit chat and crossword puzzles on the side forum lol

I think it is very difficult to ignore Ubi who not only drastically divided the fandom but also killed enthusiasm thus things are less likely to be cheerful and light-hearted when our favorite franchise suffers a horrible fate. The community is responsible for itself? Sure. Ubi has nothing to do with its current state? Na-ah, that is like thinking politics has no impact on population. We even had movements, like the Great Sandro Revolt.

You have a point here, but you also seem to be picky, it's not like I see you engaging in new threads, for instance remember Fred's Lie Detector game that went pretty well, I seem to recall you commenting you couldn't care about any of us to be interested in participating so there.

Geny, I believe you're under the impression that you hold some kind of moral high ground on how people are supposed to participate to the forums, but I think you're just seeing your own side of the picture. For one thing, the people you just mentioned do have a contribution which is far more significant to the game this forum is about than idle chatter in the tavern will ever be, and I would know because I've been there with them for the most part. Secondly, it's not for you to decide how people should spend their time here, no matter how strongly you feel that "it would be better if..", it just doesn't work that way. No one's obligated to fulfill any entertainment needs your or I or anyone else might have, although it wold be nice if that just happened naturally, but the point is you just can't force it. There's no need for words like responsibility or effort or any feeling of self-sacrifice for the betterment of the forum, no one signed up for those when they joined. People do those on their own accord and if they don't, they don't. But claiming that they should is just presumptuous.

I never doubted that people contribute to the game. I know how many people work on mods and maps and simply trying to better the game through thoughtful discussion. It was never my purpose to demean their work in any way. However, there is a reason why this thread is placed in the Tavern, why the opening post speaks about the situation in the Tavern. I came to HC for the game, but I stayed for the community. I can count on my fingers the number of times I read something in the game sections in the last 5 years. Therefore, when I speak about contribution, I don't mean contribution to the game, I mean contribution to Heroes Community. And I feel like the spirit of HC has always been in the Tavern. So all my old geezer whining is about the off-topic forums and them alone.

And you're right of course, I shouldn't, can't and won't force anyone to contribute. Everyone should do what they want. But that doesn't mean that I have to be happy about how things are. And therefore - I'm disappointed.

@Galaad
Politics never defined me as a person nor did they affect the way I spend time with my friends. Which is what the Tavern is all about, spending time with people, having fun and getting to know each other.

And yes, I remember leaving fred's Lie Detector. I participated in it for a bit until I decided it wasn't for me. And yes I couldn't care less about all you newbies... until I realized I became too detached from the forum I loved so much and decided to make a change. But to my dismay I found it being harder than I expected.

Unfortunately, that Tavern is located somewhere in Ashan these days and we all know how well Ashan has been received.

What I mean to say - and it's probably what Verriker and Galaad also tried to convey - is that popularity of the game has been dwindling ever since UbiSoft took over. H5 might still have been a good entry, but if you look at H6 and H7, sales are at an all-time low. With less public passing through the street every day, there's hardly any fresh blood that wants to make a stop at the Tavern too. Couple that with the fact that old timers gradually give a salute and move on, and the crowd that can be found at the Tavern also dwindles.
