Tactics - Please Help

Ok, I just couldn't scroll though all the strategy threads, since I am looking forward to learning things slower, but on-place. (For example talking about spells and I am asking which effects are working)
I just got Heroes III, I mean, it didn't work on my brother's laptop, and now that I got my laptop back I can play it.
Sooooo, I'll start with simple things.
I am looking forward to learn:

1.Spells
2.Tactics for specific towns (such as the skeleton trick with the Necromancers' faction)
3.And most importantly, if you can clarify what is up with stats such as attack/defense points so I can understand them better.

Of course, I am playing with friends, and I seem to get how things work, but for example, when I am getting in battles, opening my spell book, even when I right-click the spells, I still do not know which ones are better to use first, (I get how the artifacts work) and on which creatures shall I use them.

If any of you can please explain the following things, please take your time, I will be checking, I am really looking forward to learning as much as possible about Heroes III as I can.

Well for what it worths :

Spells :

Stay with the classics : slow, haste, bless, curse. Thes four are great, especially at expert level. Mass slow when facing wandering creatures, mass haste when facing enemy heroes or humans. Bless and curse depend on the situation. Don't bother using them with creatures which have constant damage lige nagas and angels.

Another great spell is Blind, blinding an enemy stack will just remove it from the equation of the battle, it's that simple. And that's why it's so useful.

For higher levels, it depends. Would you like a list of all spells and what's their effects? You should check the heroes 3 site, it lists everything about the spells.

For the tactics specific to towns there are great threads in the library, I advice you to take a look at them.

I'll write you more when I have time, promised.

Yeah, that's important and took me some time to understand but if you download the HD Mod (the free one) it already presents the calculations for you. Either way, each point of attack/deffense is 5% more/less over the base damage.

To learn to play watch other players on Twitch or look in this threads:
Favorite Let's Plays/Walkthroughs of Heroes III;
HoMM 3 (Small tricks vs AI);
Empire of the World;
Metataxer.

Some of these are quite expert but you will get some ideas.
This guy had some interesting streams too, much more basic gameplay tough.

Thanks bro, the link to the small tricks VS AI was really helpful.

Edit: Ok I made a copy of the scene with the map editor. All the spells for the hero you play as, knowledge and spell power also at maximum, and the exact number of creatures for both parties. If the guy in the ,,Small tricks VS Ai'' could do that, and I can't do it, that's just not cool
The terrain is the exact same, BUT, it's kind of hard
I mean can someone tell me what town for example I should play as first, and the best tricks with spells ? Or at least explain to me what did I do wrong, becus I hate copying the exact moves and spells.

I recommend playing with rampart if you're just starting out.

For fairly rich random maps, build order would be something like:
Day 1:
2nd Hero
3rd Hero (if there's still lot to discover without fighting)
4th Hero (if there's still lot to discover without fighting)
Elves Dwelling

Day 2:
Upgrade elves dwelling
5th hero (if there's still lot to discover without fighting)

Day 3:
Dendroid guard dwelling / Pegasi dwelling (doesnt matter which one as it's unlikely you will use any of them early on)

Day 4:
Dendroid guard dwelling / Pegasi dwelling (which ever is missing)

Day 5: Unicorn dwelling

Day 6: Citadel (fort upgrade)

Day 7: Castle (fort upgrade)

Week 2, Day 1:
+1 Hero. Buy elves, unicorns, centaurs. If you're rich and your existing centaur stack is very close then upgrade centaurs.

Overall building strategy: Don't build city hall or capital in any town unless you have tens of thousands of gold or it's super poor map with nothing to conquer (8XM8 random map template for example is exception).

Don't go crazy about getting those level 7 units. Some may say that it's most important but in reality you need to know what is important in what town. For rampart it's not crucial to get dragons and they are super expensive to get started with. Rampart is about centaur captains + grand elves + unicorns.

* Try to do fights without losing any units. Losing 1-2 centaurs may be ok too but if you have like 50 centaurs and you lose 10 in battle then you need to improve battle skills. Watch small battles in youtube.
* Fill your army with stacks of 1 unit and use them as living walls and for taking retaliation from enemies (the ability to hit back once per battle round). Your army should be something like:
15 Grand elves, 60 Centaur captains, 1 pixy, 1 pixy, 1 pixy, 1 pixy, 1 pixy. Replace pixy with anything else that's available and moves fast enough.

Good, but, why shouldn't I build a capitol or such, because, let's say, how else am I going to get money to get troops or stuff. Except that, ok.
Thanks

That's the general idea, you take the money from the map with the creatures you buy from the dwellings you built, that's why you can't lose too many units.
First week is all about taking money from the map with very scarse army.

You get your income from the map objects. Once you are faster at cleaning the map than your friends you'll win every time.

To be better than your friends versus the map, you need to be able to defeat larger to equal army than what they can with you having equal or less units than your friends.

But to be honest, I think you should do what you find fun, then if you need help with something specific you can come and ask. Info about what the spells do and similar is plentiful on the net and you can work through them at your own leisure.

Notice the damage and health pr. growth from low level units isn't always that far behind higher level units. What really sets them apart is the att/def values, meaning if your hero have e.g. high attack, your low level units may hit as hard as high level units. So it'd be a good idea to choose a hero who tends to get a higher attack stat, such as a Barbarian.

Why not use Pegasi? Yes, it's weak, but fast aswell. Upgraded one even better. Speed 12. You can take care of some enemy level 1-3 shooters or other low level units. The only problem with them is, that they cost additional crystal. Availability of crystal on the map determines, whether to build it or not imo. Or even if u build, whether to upgrade it...

Normally you shouldn't have time for upgrading pegasi in the build order of week 1. It's kind of hard to use unupgraded ones effectively. So it's unlikely that buying pegasi will be a better idea than buying other units or more heroes. In some situations it can be of course. Or if you know how to use them skillfully.

The most important considerations in that order:

1. Is diplomacy allowed? If it is pick rampart and Ryland (starts with diplomacy)

2. Is Necropolis allowed? If it is always pick necropolis, get vampire lords and abuse necromancy skill. If the map allows you to assemble Cloak of the Undead King then it is auto-victory.

3. Is conflux allowed? If it is then always pick conflux.

4. Otherwise play a normal tactic with e.g. rampart. If you're just playing with friends, chances are these things are not banned. But they will be soon if you keep abusing them.

Your advice is good if he's to win at all cost. That's not the sentiment I get from his post though.

E.g. is necro only banned because it's OP or is it banned because it's boring to wait for your opponents 25+ min. turns?

This is why I don't like multiplayer. I started the map I'm playing Friday afternoon and I'm on week six.

Well if it's not for max victory then you just need to make sure you don't get outclassed by overpowered things E.g. if someone goes necropolis you should go either diplomacy or conflux. Etc. But if everyone plays normally you can also play normally.

Usually 4 minutes turns are the optimal thing. Then HD mod greatly decreases both clicks and turns duration, what it took a lot of time and energy before is transferring 7 stacks, one by one, several times during same turn. Then now HD mod also has much faster battle speed so indeed the multiplayer was never so friendly and fluid, imo.

@Salamandre I guess you didn't understood, I'm taking two or three hours per turn, it was more weeks 2 and 3, and I'm playing HotA, if it was WoG with my usual settings each turn takes several hours and the 1st and last days of the week I have to sleep in the middle. No one wants to play if it has to wait for this, it would be better play by mail.

In case of equal level players...

I have won with Tower played against Necropolis. Oh, and btw, the Necro player wasn't my grandmom or auntie
Was about my level player at the time.
Actually Necro with certain limitations (No Armor of the Damned, no Cloak of the Undead King, no Isra, Vidomina, Galthran and Thant, no Necrom. amplifier, creature quantity average on map, not strong, as it almost always happen to be chosen) really is not that overpowered.

Sure thing is:

If you want to improve, the best way is to see how. I prefer watching than reading posts, and also you can see how to play in particular example. That's how I learned how to play in Multiplayer. Channels I can recommend?

I am starting my career on YouTube, so I can recommend you myself, try one of my "Toturials". Search for "tyranuxus" in Yt. In my mind is to do a video about how Attack/Defend works with Offence, Armor, everything, but that's quest for next Sunday I think.

Also, for more videos, I want to recommend "Meridian", he's not the best, but his commentary is very enjoyable and he know, what he's doing. Also MeKick = TheKnownWorld and huanito are worth to watch on Yt. All the Rusians with 100+ vievers too, but I prefer engish than russian.

Hope, you'll improve very fast, maybe someday, we'll meet each other on the BattleField.

Well yes that pretty much cuts out all the good things about necropolis
