Some H3 discussions

Hi everyone,

I would like to point some things (they may be different topics, so i apologise for that):


1. One would be about the randomness of the Refugee Camp item. Is there any formula or is it complete randomness... i was making a map that had 2 of those, and i find that one of the refugee camps always give the same creatures on the first time of purchase, and the other is always random.

2. Another thing is, i have the H3 complete version of the game and it often shutsdown in midle of the games. I've seem other people complain in other forums, but no solution mentioned. I have downloaded from other sources but is all the same... Is it a general thing or is there something that could be done?

3. Third would be a bug that i found while making a map... it seems that you can't call an event fight above a Favorable Winds object, making the game shutsdown when you step it in the game. It happened to me while using water walk.(btw, there would be great creating a thread of all known bugs of H3)

4. Last thing, i think is just a glitch that can happen. While testing a map over and over, sometimes happened that you are able to cross a border gate or open a border guard without visiting the tend. I wasn't able to figure out the main reason for that to happen. It hapened on the very first "in game days", so i just close the game and open again.

(one more thing)5. what is the factor that determinate the starting hero to show up on the Advanced Options? If you have just one, there's no problem, but if you have more than one, sometimes i can manage for it to show the one that i want, sometimes it shows none.

About points 2-4. We are talking about 20 years old game, where last patch came out 15 years ago. It's not strange that game works 'not fine' with new OSes and modern drives. Some bugs were fixed in HotA and this fan made expansion with fan made HD Mod is our last hope :]

1. I think it's random don't know the formula, probably gives lower tiers more often than highest.

2. Played hundreads of games with no crash, could be so combatibility problem with today windows systems. Some mods tends to shutdown more often than the reqular game, hellou VCMI!


I have always hated Cartographer in heroes but what you guys think about travelling two-way monolith with no hero moment penalty? Now, if I remember correctly first release did not have that option as well the option to buy unupgraded units from upgraded dwelling. First, I loved that you could hit space in Cave entrance and monoliths but then got little annoyed by the fact ai used it constantly for no good reason. Still, random maps against other human players it's the most unfair imo. I know, I have used it a lot but is it fair always select where you want to go from 10 different monoliths with no moment loss, I find it little too much.

The only crashes I had with this game is when I tried to wog beyond my knowledge, otherwise either is bad/corrupt install, or you didn't do necessarily tweakings if you use Win 8 or higher (compatibility mode etc).

I've recently been digging into the code of the game, I'll see if I can figure this one out for you when I am at home.

As it is, there's a bug in SoD which causes Refugee Camps to provide Pikemen the first time around. I am not sure if this is intended (to avoid players from getting powerful creatures directly from the start) or simply an oversight that forgets to seed the Refugee Camps with a proper creature type. HD Mod tried to fix it as well as HotA, but it only did so partially as far as I remember (they're still Pikemen, but have quantities that vary as if they're supposed to be another creature type) - or maybe it's because both tried to fix it and this is a result of them combined .

That's exactly it, pikemen who shows on the first time, so it seems it is a known bug after all (or intended).

You may be right, i remember when i had the original H3 Restoration of Erathia and never had problens. Later i instaled the complete version, and even so i don't recall if i start to have this problem right away or it came later on, but probably is about the computer OS updates. All i can say is that it happened in win 7 and still does in 10. I've seem people claim to have same problem in win 8. I've tried to mess around with the compatibility mode but no results, also run in administrator mode, same thing.

I may give it a try to HotA, HC don't show many info about it, but it seems to be just another expansion of H3. I may not be ready for MOD still, as i like to keep things simples . HD mod seems to have its flaws, as i read about it, hope it gets better later on.

Hota is not a mod, it's expansion like AB and SoD. Fan made but still expansion.

Yeah i called it expansion, of mod i meant the HD with the complete expansions (and Wog).

Things are simple nowadays, almost everything comes with installer and Hota is no exception.

Do not go install Era mods into Hota folder though.

I never had any issues on Win7, I would suggest you do a clean install. If you still have issues after this, try to find a log and google the error.

Keep in mind that when you use HotA, it has its own campaigns. In the current version of HotA, it's not possible to play the game's original campaigns.

1. In 1st week Pikeman, then random.

2. I am playing H3 Complete + HD Mod + Hota and there were 0 bugs, crash (Win 8.1). Only some of them appears when playing Multiplayer via Hamtchi, but steal only 2 per 8 hours ...

Try to play other templates than the original one, Jebus Cross can be good, Mini-Nostalgia, but you can search for more less rich. There are no stupid monolits, zones are kinda fair, and you know, what to expect from a map.

I have made a bit of progress and I think I have found the subroutine that handles this one; I just had very little time the past few days and I really need to interpret what's happening in the subroutine to understand how they coded it. Will update once I have more info .

As far as I remember, the reason for pikemen showing up in a refugee camp first week is wether there is a neutral guard located nearby the camp.
If there isn't any creature placed in a specific distance around the camp, different creatures are showing up in the camp

Does this apply to hd mod? I placed a camp and centaurs in front of it and got arch devils day 1. After removing centaurs from the map there were no neutral creatures. It still gave random creatures.


After some testing it seems that getting level 1 creatures is less likely or impossible. Anything between level 2 and 7 seemed to have similar chance to be available in the camp.
