And after my very favorable last match up I now got the other end of the luck scale by having to play with Stronghold against Necro again which Lord Michal got. I went into every Shatter, weaken, detain dark skill possible while giving my creatures 30% magic resistance, expecting that he would go for dark and summoning and I hoped that he would only go for summoning spells then so that I could, ideally, overrun him with my army despite the summoned creatures. Anyway, Puppet Master still struck very hard in addition to his summons, leading him to a very well-played victory in the old art of grim necromantic evocation magic (somehow I got no war machine skills in my skill tree. Those could have helped a bit):

So that I wouldn't end the night in a state of complete.. pissness, Elvin and I went at it the good old fashioned way, with pure, unfiltered and unadulterated might and magic brutality. The bloody aftermath on the battlefield quenched my raging thirst for savagery, probably because I had contributed to killing half of my troops myself. It felt great.

Here are some thoughts on my first games yesterday.

1. Haven Marksman precise shot range is too strong. It is 5 squares range! basically with one shot against t5, t6,t7 unit in that range you make more damage than the no range penalty one bonus you will get through the whole battle. This should be reduced to 3 squares.

2. What is the A/D/S/K distribution of faction heroes when they level up? I noticed that it is the same per faction (inferno A + K), Haven (A+D), Academy (K+?), Sylvan (D+?).  This way you can play only one or two strategies at most (inferno 3 because of the channeling. I did not try it but I find it OP). I would advise making 2 classes of heroes Magic and Might so you can have some variation. Also this means that opponents should not see each other heroes so they would not know what hero the opponent has picked and pick counter skills.

3. Light is OK but mana goes down the drain pretty fast. This is school for non magic heroes.

4. Dark is hell of an op. at one point you can have 2 frenzied units, 1 with puppet, 1 blinded and I got Magic resistance which did not help much. Your army just eat itself from inside and there is just no tactics in this. THere is almost no counter to frenzy on round 1 if you know how to place it right. I strongly suggest to alter berserk as it is in HoMM5.5 which brings much greater strategy and lowers down the luck factor.


Any opinions on those?

The easy answer would be that, while your first impression is appreciated (although nothing different from what I imagine everyone's been through), you cannot seriously pretend to be knowledgeable enough about the map after one day of play to suggest balance changes. The elaborate answer would be to take each of your examples above and explain why they're in their current state, the pros and cons, their situational viability, the counters, but that would take quite a while and it's frankly better understood in time with more experience. But if Elvin wants to provide more insight then that would be just fine.

My experience tells me..

1) That nobody will ever pick precise shot with 3 tiles and if they do it will probably not see play. Tele assault helps but then the unit gets ganged upon and dies.

2) You can use a lot more builds than you give the map credit for. But I agree that dual classes would have been more fun. Too much work to implement though.

3) Maybe mana cost could be reduced, considering that they are currently 4x4. Though I never really had mana issues and knowledge points have received a buff (11 mana instead of 10).

4) I'd say that if someone finds their army with 1 puppet, 2 frenzy and 1 blind they are a) out of mana b) doing something wrong. There are good odds for cleansing, anti-magic or vampirism and then there are other indirect solutions. Frenzy would have been better with 1 duration(hardcoded crap) but I don't see why it's such a big deal. Early on hero atb is a coin toss but then so is its target. If the defender plays first, he can play around with initiative, unit placement or protections. If he plays second he can potentially counter it. From the moment of casting till the unit acts it might or not be interrupted, it might hit the intended target or not, its damage may be good or negligible. So I'd say situationally good. At least it cannot be cleansed.

Agree or disagree, I am open to impressions and feedback. And testing matches ofc

Im not even sure if ppl are using the marksmans right. You are not supposed to put them in the corner. Its better to put the zealots/inquistors in the corner and the marksmans right next to them. Like that:

Simply a great game, gripping from beginning to end. No shatter dark for the orcs, just resistance with basic shatter summoning while necro had summoning and dark.

Very nice match indeed! He used the regeneration of the Wyvern very intelligently in combination with the wait command while occupying the other necro units. It seems to me that it might actually be better not to pick shatter dark at all and invest into other skills instead. When I picked all the shatter dark skills, puppet master and frenzy were still devastating, maybe because those don't require a lot of spellpower to be effective.

Depends how you feel about puppeted cyclopes Also note that in this game first two puppets were resisted which is pretty uncommon. Normally lack of shatter would have hurt orcs a lot more.

Not many games remain, time to wrap this up. Deadline is 20/11 but we can extend by a few days if necessary.

It is also time to tell me what the cup of the fallen should be about. Do you want the same version? Same with proper mass spells? No spell/artifact bans? Perhaps 3.1 balance? Bigger or smaller armies? That really depends on what you want to see. I could even make a 'might' round where all factions have might stats/skills or even a 'bloodrage' round where all factions have bloodrage. I can't guarantee that it will be balanced ofc (Obviously the main round balance will not be affected by what happens to the cup of the fallen)

I have a suggestion for the next round of this tourney. Make it BO3 matches + final match and boss fight BO5.

For Cup of the fallen I would suggest the latest version of your map. It will offer something new for the players and also some feedback for you. Also BO3 matches and BO5 finals.

For those who don't know, the new version has week 6 armies(+1 week) and proper mass spells. Also some puppet rebalancing that I am thinking to also apply to the main tourney.
