A Museum of Might and Magic VIII – Day of the Destroyer

I am part of the people who started playing the RPGs late, after Heroes. When I started discovering the wonderful experience they are, I was particularly amazed by the overwhelming quality and amount of pre-rendered scenes. Everytime you enter a dungeon, a home, a location. I could find nowhere in the internet where such beautiful and impressive art (game was out in 2000!) was showcased so I decided to extract each and everyone of them and convert them to gif (aside a few that couldn't convert properly) because I genuinely think they deserve it, especially in this time and age where most don't play these old gems, so I am more than happy to showcase the beauty, the insane dedication of former artists of Might and Magic.

Please discover or re-discover the beauty that is Jadame!

Warning There is around 120 animated gifs, long time loading, but worth the wait.
Zip download (gifs)

Some of the general screens such as eg houses overlap with areas, so I chose according to filename.

Yes, yes, very nice... (although to me takes forever to load with 20 Kb internet )

I always wondered, if they (NWC) could do such nice scenes for H3 and M&M series (and in great quantities, not just 1 or two), why bad H4 cinematics sometimes, and/or inexistent H4 expansions 3D cinematics?

Furthermore, their actual 3D titles don't even use these assets, which are more advanced...

Probably they lost the artist/s responsible for this beatuty, or it became to expensive, or went to work with another studio...

Does anyone have any info on that?
PRobably we will never know...

Yes Jadame my love :-):-):-) The best graphic in all NWC games.
I suggest download pack because hard to save one by one all. Its 124!
This page has 1gb to load!
And 4 unused Seer, Inn, regnan spellshop.
For gif you can optimalize graphic in gimp eg. Smallest size. This page has 1gb to load!
Thanks a lot :-)

Too heavy to load even for high connections. I played the game probably 20 times, graphics are not particularly good (imo MM6 beats them) and MM7 has better mechanics too. What I like is movement freedom and simplicity, you just move where you want, few potions, few weapons. Good to relax, as every game should be for.

You're welcome.

But alas there is a few I couldn't convert for some obscure reasons, hopefully I can fix it and add them sometime.

Thanks a lot. I suggest smk pack too because you have sound too in gif no sound. Rad Video Tool is free. You can see it with RVT with sounds.

You want smk or mp4? I have both, conversion was smk to mp4 to gif.

Ps. Ever heard of h3 modding tools? They read smk, bik etc just fine.
Then I personally use ffmpeg because is for all OS, I will see if I can get RAD Tools to work here on linux and check those few vids that had problems for conversion when I get the time, thanks.

I can surely send you smks but I don't understand: can't you access them? It's in Anims/ the vid files, smks are in there, easy. I made the thread specifically because I wanted the vids as animated gifs to showcase but if what you want is the original smks you have them all in the game files, wouldn't it be faster for you to access them directly?

You are right all are in vid. But in oldest versions they are on CD not in game. I only think that better is with sound. I thought too about people who dont have installed MMVIII or they dont know how to extract. Maybe they want. So because only me ask, they dont its is not a lot important :-) I told by the way you extract.
And here is MMVIII trailer:

I'd certainly say this deserves a QP mates, Galaad put a huge amount of effort into converting all those and making them reliably available for our convenience, kudos buddy lol

yes those certainly give you the better more elevated picture of NWC's vision for their universe, even the most mundane of structures are very creatively portrayed in these 100 plus renders, meanwhile Erwin and friends had terrible trouble to create even one decent looking render per game let alone hundreds lol

come on mates let's remake Jadame in 3D like this (well, if we had half a budget) lol

hmm bear in mind 3DO went bankrupt and took NWC with it, obviously the highly talented artists weren't all sticking around on the sinking ship,
yes they bled a lot of talent after MM8 and even more by the time of Gathering Storm and Winds of War, (hence shoestring budget cutscenes) lol

needless to say Erwin made no effort to contact or identify these people who delivered the soul of the games after the fact either when all was well again,
well I guess after all necromancers and souls don't tend to mingle do they mwahahaha lol

I agree that the effort should be rewarded, but more than anything the initiative of revisiting the old universe and rediscover it. In this day and age when I'm constantly bombarded with cringy crap like Ashan under the guise of "Might & Magic" this is most definitely a breath of fresh air and also a reminder of the amazing days from before that connected me to the franchise in the first place.

However I really, really dislike the loading issue. It's a shame because the convenience to view gifs without opening additional pages is great, but it's nagging for reading comments and scrolling to the bottom.

Well, didn't Erwin say in an interview he wanted to be a gothic darkie BDSM purple elf villain sort of character in Ashan?
If so it suits his general intentions : P
Besides, why bring on people talented enough to make whatever he thinks or makes look like crap? His mistake was thinking fans wudn't notice it was crap otherwise :v haha

But back to the nice visuals... they really add to the sense there's a rich world out there. I had the impression of "fire animation overuse" at first, but these probably were some of the firsts ones made, as it gets a lot more varied later. I particularly like the cauldron one. THey are also similar to the ones found in Heroes III, understandably as they must have been done by the same team.

I would like to have the .mp4's with the sound to download if possible, I might even be able to add them to H4 perhaps someday! As you see in my signature, I am working on a mod, and the next big phase would be a huge (and rather slow probably) ambient/GUI/graphics update. These would be perfect as little cutscenes integrated in places (although for some things until we crack the programming, screenshots would have to do as I think the heroes 4 guys did not even integrate cutscenes into campaigns, just static images with rolling text/narrator voiceover...)

Thanks guys.

For the loading time, this is sadly unavoidable if everything is in one place, and a bunch of links just wouldn't feel like a museum's exhibition.

Spoiler tags would come in handy but oh well, personally when I encounter such threads I just read something else in another tab while it loads then come back or wait patiently, no biggie IMO.

There you go, and added to the OP for anyone else's convenience. Is m4v not mp4 though sorry, shouldn't make a difference.

Very good idea this museum! And your work Galaad! Thanks a lot.
And to complete it all cutscenes in youtube:
All MMVIII cutsecenes
