Read through Tribute to strategies, then read through 50 pages of Tactics thread. Both are pinned.

Then watch some people play and learn.

Best trick to play WoG maps is to copy Second Henchmen from TDS (Woodmelon even let a note saying "fell free to use it") make a mod and play with it against an AI without them. When you start all fights with Prayer and Haste and a nasty creature that simply doesn't dye even hard maps become quite easy.
