welcome to the fold

i still play h2 almost as much as hota; i just wish it had the ui enhancements of h3, and an rmg.

h3 is one of the most brilliant games ever made, but h2 is a master work of art.

H7 was not just the worst installment. It also, along with H6, had stolen from us the whole decade of new heroes experience

On the topic of H3 and H2:
While in terms of sheer gameplay H3 is superior (only second to H5 with exspansions), I do find H2 to be the better game. Simple fact, the atmosphere and feeling of H2 is just greater and overshadow the gameplay improvements of H3. In my opinion H3's shift to to darker, more realistic visuals where a bad call as the game no longer feels as... magical. I also agree with most of the points made in the article you linked, save for some stuff about balancing. I suppose this is a proof of how important a good atmosphere is.
Ahh, I suddenly feel a surge of inspiration...

Yes, this is why some people are working on H3 Succession Wars.

While I agree h2's visuals are more magical, h3 still looks magical. And now with Era and Fred's object patch, you can eventually get some of that vibe back.

Ubisoft went even more into the "realistic" vibe, while I agree h2's visuals are superior to any other, I would also say h3 looks much much more magical than say, the Ashan games.

Now before Antalyan jumps at me I will add a thousand IMOs in the post.

Heroes 2 editor is much poorer then objects can only be placed one per square. Due to such restrictions, there is not much difference between vanilla H2 maps and top custom maps, you are very limited in color variations, lands/forests blending and transitions between areas. In H3 you can use multiple objects on same square, hide parts of objects, specify state of object -upper/under, therefore for once you get a huge difference between poorly designed vanilla maps and creative mapmakers taking their time. For me, due to such enhanced editor, H3 can reach mesmerizing designs I never found in Heroes 2.

I prefer H2 town screens and overall music tracks over H3, though.

Well part of the problem with H3 is the fact that they choose to go for a realistic vibe. The game just feels more grey regardless because of that compared to the cheerful H2. H6 and H7 seven have the same problems too I'll admit, but not to same degree, yet it wouldn't really be the case with H5.

I prefer H3 visuals as I think they hit the perfect balance between "realism" and "kinda goofy fairytale". When it comes to armies clashing in warfare and stuff, H2 don't quite cut it. You need some of that realism.

Got there finally, eh? H2 is my preferred and my senses around H3 were pretty much like what you mentioned, back when it was released. Although Ghosts (and some also says about Genies) were really OP, I did enjoy H2 the most due its unbalanced vibe and magical feel. Genies were simply so cool that way. Weak top tier units, which could bring some luck all of a sudden, dreaded much more than Mighty Gorgons would ever be.

I thought H3 was a firm upgrade in all of that to be honest, I like the fantasy realism and the leathery classical style atmosphere a bit more than the fairy tale style (though it is obviously a lot better than Erwin's plagiarism and excesses), especially the heroes portraits of H2 look jarringly thrown together (because they are) lol

I think H2 has more of the ingredients of a good game on paper though because it is more compact and easy to balance while H3 is easier to break, although the imbalance is part of the fun lol

H5 is much worse looking than H3, I can understand people preferring H2 to H3, although I don't, but preferring H5 is just tasteless. There are some "ideas" in H5 that could have improved the game, but in the end, with an overall perspective, they didn't. H3 experience is still magical and it's almost endless even without the so many modes, (put aside the fun of using 2D map editor), while H5 gets repetitive real quick.

To bluntly answer the topic thread's question: No.

It only needs a state-of-the-art computer that only enthusiasts of such medium of technology can afford.

Plus that it can, still, use Direct X 9.29.xxxx when it comes to graphics interface. But, with the GPU power of a Direct X 12 capable Video card and, plenty of RAM to spare.

In other words, a very powerful gamer's rig that can still use a much older graphics interface such as Direct X 9.29(9.0d). Unless you happen to still use Windows 8.1 with its Direct X 11 in its own installation and configuration of a database.

Other than that, the game is still enjoyable as long as you have successfully reserved yourself a whole day in order to play it rather alone against AI players or, online multiplayer.

BTW: Happy New Year to everyone still visiting these forum threads(web-site).

First H2 and H5 have both colorful and cartoonish graphics so obviously people would prefer them for similar reasons.

Second there is no reason to put "ideas" between quotations and in the end they definately improved the game a whole lot.

All gamemechanics from H5 are clones or extensions of H3 mechanics so the game can impossibly have repetitive elements that were not already in H3. Not liking the graphics has nothing to do with repetition.

Unmodded H5 looks like Warcraft, the art direction has nothing to do with the one from H2. If H3 looks different than H2, H5 and further look alien to the brand.

I strongly believe there is a large group of people in this world that has a positive reaction in the brain to colorful graphics (similar to how people often prefer sunlight to cloudy weather). I have also noticed there are in general a huge amount of desaturated games on the market and a lot of them have 'restore color' mods made for them by players.

Your 'alien to the brand' viewpoint makes no sense to me, back in the days H3 came out you could argue for the same reason the graphics were alien to the brand compared to H1&2 and the old Kings Bounty. To me H5 looks like 'H2 3d' not 'H3 3d'. H4 was also very colorful. All in all I find H3 most 'alien to the brand' graphics it has more Disciples atmosphere.

I was responding to Artu who did not understand peoples preference for H5 graphics, in that perspective all visual aspects are relevant.

Also since when is there no relation between use of color and artistic direction?
