@verriker: IMO you are exaggerating into extremes and praising H3 for proportions doesn't make any sense to me what so ever, almost nothing in that game is made to right proportion or adjusted to the same scale (not that that has any influence on how I appreciate the graphics).
@Stevie: H5 doesn't have enough polygons to catch ODs concepts properly, but my main point was that H3 concept art was already moving to the popular high fantasy style and that the creators of this concept art clearly had a very different picture in their head of the H3 universe than the 'medieval moderate realism' crowd.

magnomagus said: Considering H5 was bought by hundreds of thousands of people there are actually very few people who complain, it is just a small group of H3 conservatives on HC, through other channels the vibe is very different and H5,H6 graphics are often considered superior.
When a sequel of a classic comes around, it always sells to a degree. If I remember correctly, it was Sal who compared the number of people still playing them on-line and now that both games are old enough, comparing H5 fan base to H3 is like comparing Monaco to China. Numbers are not a path you'd want to take in defense of H5.

True, but this was only about people who complain about the graphics, not about how many play the game.

One of the prominent reasons people didn't like the game, hence didn't play it, was the graphics.

I am describing bodily proportion of characters not the scale of the world (which is impossible and futile to try to represent one to one in Heroes), if it makes no sense whatsoever I'm not sure how else to convey it except to say look at the two games with your eyes until you do, I mean will you really argue that this creature with its big fat hands and no face is better proportioned than this one, or that this guy is built more like an actual human than this guy, if so I just cannot agree lol

That is TOTALLY subjective.
For example, I tend to think that H7 is graphically by far the worst game, whether it's the map with its tiny objects and bad perspective or the blocky UI.
Compared with that H5 looks absolutely fantastic.
And by the way, for sure I didn't play H3 because it looked so great after H2. On the contrary. It didn't.

@verriker: I'm going to let this thing go, because proportions never bothered me in any of these games and I'm surprised for some people they do. If I ever go to measure all these sprites and models like a renaissance picture I'm going delirious.

Now you are doing exactly what you claimed was a bad idea, assuming numbers (without scientific evidence).

Well, when there is meaningful drop in number of players in a sequel and consistent complaints about art direction which are way beyond individual exceptions in terms of significance, I happen to consider them linked, how pseudo-scientific of me.

Lol. If you're going to suggest we can not be 100 percent sure in terms of scientific criteria, go ahead. I'm not writing an academic thesis. Everything indicates that H3 aged much better than H5, on-line players, amount of modding, forum activity and comments. But yes, thousands of secret, quiet H5 fans is "hypothetically" a possibility, if you want to waste time on such an argument.

I liked what H5 did proportionally with some of the monsters and such but whenever they tackled anything humanoid it completely backfired. Like, almost the entire Haven roster looks completely out of place and everyone has enormous hands (the djinn is an extreme, probably intentional example). Treants, griffins, hydras and the like? looks pretty good IMO

'prominent reason'
But considering the fact that Heroes 5 has very good user ratings on steam, metacritic and moddb the difference in popularity between the products may not be much dependant on quality differences at all, but can be explained entirely by economic theories such as consumer 'lock-in' and 'demand-side economies of scale'.

Eh, if we're to take a look at NWC's art for Heroes 4 and 5, there's hardly any follow up to what you regard as high fantasy. And at the end of the day concept art is concept art, whether it makes it into the game or not is what really matters. Since I have no problem with how Heroes 3 or Heroes 5 handle their creature model designs (with some minor exceptions), I see no point in arguing. Mind you I was never bothered by graphics that much in the first place. But I must admit that with Heroes 6 and 7 all that would change.

So what if someone comes back at you and says that Heroes 5 sold better than Heroes 3 and then argues how that proves its visual superiority, wouldn't you just naturally point out the jump in logic?

You are right, I have no argument with you and no issues with the graphics of any of these games. In fact I can't even remember why I ended up in this thread, I must have been terribly bored.

I'm not the one who brought up an argument of popularity, I'm objecting to someone who did in favor of H5, even though it is not the popular choice.
If everything else was just perfect about Heroes 5, most likely people would let the graphics slide despite their minor objections. But as things are, there is quite a significant and vocal number of people which leads me to consider that the art direction is one of the reasons H5 is less popular than H3.

My experience is that H4 is the most important reason.

Maybe in the beginning, but enough time has passed that people still playing each game now evaluate it without being affected by the trends of the day or the disappointment from a precessor.
