yeah I don't really think if they were trying to remake past assets or remake ideas has anything to do with it really, I mean it's obvious to everybody that at least 75% or so of all the H5 objects and units and stuff are ideas reused from H3,

it's not about straight up remaking H3 or H3 assets or whatever for me it's just about carrying over a more suitable style of art, such as in the NWC H5 for instance which was coherent with past games and looked great IMO,
Nival H5 compounds a bunch of dodgy choices for me by getting rid of the representational board game approach to the map and battle, trying to do everything to a realistic scale which doesn't add up and only makes the average map feel smaller and weird, but also give us odd looking creatures rendered in PS1 era 3D who are exaggerated and cartoonishly proportioned and just harder to take seriously as your troops in a wargame overall lol

basically H2-H3 gives me more of a feeling of a strategist taking over miles and miles of provinces and territories in a Tolkien style world with magic but also a sense of tragedy about it, while H5 and onwards makes me feel like I am riding a horse through a local field or tiny forest or bog or whatever leading an army of wry tongue in cheek caricatures from Mad Magazine or something, I don't know it just feels a bit like a parody and less authentic and immersive to me as a game world, it's more complicated to recreate the feeling or vibe of grand strategy IMO than just to do your take on loosely adapting a bunch of old H3 objects to 3D models and plug them in lol

also even that learning stone when you look at it is a fatter and chunkier learning stone lol, IMO H5 graphics tend to be jarringly clunky and blocky overall and just lack some of the elegance seen in all other Heroes games (even Erwin's ones), it's all a bit rough and ready lol

Ok mostly fair, but I don't consider H2 & H5 exactly equal in style, more like 40% for the adventure map and for the towns and creatures not even 5%. I also don't find any of the two games graphics much worthy of the word 'art' with a few exceptions maybe and I have never seen a painting that looks like heroes 2.

Well, they are not high art, of course, but the word has a broader meaning also, when you read the credits, there are graphic artists present etc. Illustration is the word I mostly prefered, but I didnt want to write "illustration-like and reminding of illustrations from medieval novellas," it sounded repetitive. They dont remind me of Rubens either.

It's best to just forget about heroes. And it's a shame, considering most "strategy" games these days aren't really strategic at all. These card games are all just a rock paper scissor games, these civilization paperwork game are just plain boring and people just tries to win in other ways than fighting, a lot of "strategy" games also got an action element to it, which shouldn't be because you want to think every move in a strategy game.

Reminisce upon the old glory days of Heroes 3 with a game taking a whole day and calling pizza with your friends. For me, duels in Heroes 6 was the best of them all. Nothing beats just having 2 equal armies and smashing into each other right away.

@Kayna: That last phrase of your post reminds me of about 20 years ago.

That is when hotseat gaming was kinda strong trend of the times.

Talking for a hour about how the game's map developed itself into an almost puzzling do or die type of a situation in between all human players of the same exact map. For me, that broke my interest in hotseat PC gameplay. Never finishing a game within the mere 12 to 16 hours window that we, all, agreed to allow ourselves at competitive friend's only group play.

For me, Heroes 3 was a mere 1 single hour, small map, RMG game. Not taking the whole day to play. Only the Civilization games should ever, take that much time to play for winning or losing at the very end of it all.

Even 15 years ago, when I decided to return to PC ownership(total end of the Arcade rooms throughout the whole city of Ottawa), the idea was to play at first, Heroes 2 and, then, Heroes 3 Complete and, the rest followed. Street-Fighter 4: 2009 PC Edition awoke an entire new perspective to PC gaming for me. Not so strategy gaming as much as before but, do reminiscent on these games when time allows me so.

Duel is quite doable in the Heroes 7 version 2.2.1 as long as your opponent has the exact same status of a game and, must agree on the modding files in use on both sides as well.

You loved arcade, may I kiss you?

I wish I was 45 nowadays, because being 30 means I wasn't old enough to play during its heyday (golden age for fighting games in arcade is actually early 90's till late 90's).
The mid 90's had so many "killers" (Killer Instinct, X-men COTA, Primal Rage, Real Bout 1, SSF2X, KOF 95, SFA1... )
