yeah I don't really think if they were trying to remake past assets or remake ideas has anything to do with it really, I mean it's obvious to everybody that at least 75% or so of all the H5 objects and units and stuff are ideas reused from H3,

it's not about straight up remaking H3 or H3 assets or whatever for me it's just about carrying over a more suitable style of art, such as in the NWC H5 for instance which was coherent with past games and looked great IMO,
Nival H5 compounds a bunch of dodgy choices for me by getting rid of the representational board game approach to the map and battle, trying to do everything to a realistic scale which doesn't add up and only makes the average map feel smaller and weird, but also give us odd looking creatures rendered in PS1 era 3D who are exaggerated and cartoonishly proportioned and just harder to take seriously as your troops in a wargame overall lol

basically H2-H3 gives me more of a feeling of a strategist taking over miles and miles of provinces and territories in a Tolkien style world with magic but also a sense of tragedy about it, while H5 and onwards makes me feel like I am riding a horse through a local field or tiny forest or bog or whatever leading an army of wry tongue in cheek caricatures from Mad Magazine or something, I don't know it just feels a bit like a parody and less authentic and immersive to me as a game world, it's more complicated to recreate the feeling or vibe of grand strategy IMO than just to do your take on loosely adapting a bunch of old H3 objects to 3D models and plug them in lol

also even that learning stone when you look at it is a fatter and chunkier learning stone lol, IMO H5 graphics tend to be jarringly clunky and blocky overall and just lack some of the elegance seen in all other Heroes games (even Erwin's ones), it's all a bit rough and ready lol

Ok mostly fair, but I don't consider H2 & H5 exactly equal in style, more like 40% for the adventure map and for the towns and creatures not even 5%. I also don't find any of the two games graphics much worthy of the word 'art' with a few exceptions maybe and I have never seen a painting that looks like heroes 2.

Well, they are not high art, of course, but the word has a broader meaning also, when you read the credits, there are graphic artists present etc. Illustration is the word I mostly prefered, but I didnt want to write "illustration-like and reminding of illustrations from medieval novellas," it sounded repetitive. They dont remind me of Rubens either.

It's best to just forget about heroes. And it's a shame, considering most "strategy" games these days aren't really strategic at all. These card games are all just a rock paper scissor games, these civilization paperwork game are just plain boring and people just tries to win in other ways than fighting, a lot of "strategy" games also got an action element to it, which shouldn't be because you want to think every move in a strategy game.

Reminisce upon the old glory days of Heroes 3 with a game taking a whole day and calling pizza with your friends. For me, duels in Heroes 6 was the best of them all. Nothing beats just having 2 equal armies and smashing into each other right away.

@Kayna: That last phrase of your post reminds me of about 20 years ago.

That is when hotseat gaming was kinda strong trend of the times.

Talking for a hour about how the game's map developed itself into an almost puzzling do or die type of a situation in between all human players of the same exact map. For me, that broke my interest in hotseat PC gameplay. Never finishing a game within the mere 12 to 16 hours window that we, all, agreed to allow ourselves at competitive friend's only group play.

For me, Heroes 3 was a mere 1 single hour, small map, RMG game. Not taking the whole day to play. Only the Civilization games should ever, take that much time to play for winning or losing at the very end of it all.

Even 15 years ago, when I decided to return to PC ownership(total end of the Arcade rooms throughout the whole city of Ottawa), the idea was to play at first, Heroes 2 and, then, Heroes 3 Complete and, the rest followed. Street-Fighter 4: 2009 PC Edition awoke an entire new perspective to PC gaming for me. Not so strategy gaming as much as before but, do reminiscent on these games when time allows me so.

Duel is quite doable in the Heroes 7 version 2.2.1 as long as your opponent has the exact same status of a game and, must agree on the modding files in use on both sides as well.

You loved arcade, may I kiss you?

I wish I was 45 nowadays, because being 30 means I wasn't old enough to play during its heyday (golden age for fighting games in arcade is actually early 90's till late 90's).
The mid 90's had so many "killers" (Killer Instinct, X-men COTA, Primal Rage, Real Bout 1, SSF2X, KOF 95, SFA1... )

Actually...I started video game arcade play on Double Dragon 1.

And, that was at the teenage year of 15 years of age as in 1983(34 years ago today).

To add to all of this, I still got that very same game on my latest PC as of right now. Am ranked in the first 100 positions on to the Expert difficulty in the entire wide world. Same situation as of Final Fight of 1989(have it on my Xbox 360 console unit).

Played and mastered every single game made by Capcom's fighting game genre ever since. Am on SF5 right about now. Can't wait for the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinity(M.vs.C. 4). Am bound to excel on this one as well.

Hint: It is not Tony Stark in the Iron Man suit. It is me. Agent Luc J. P. of S.H.I.E.L.D at level 70 and climbing. Replaced Nick Fury as Director and, have the latest in flying aircraft carriers in the whole wide world.

Well...Ain't that just

After many hours i want to make comments about homm 7

First of all, i am the guy who hates preconception. My logic always says "there are lot of people worked for it" and i always try to look half full bottle instead of half empty.

My personal rating is 50/100. Main reason behind this rating, game is very similar to homm 6. After the homm 5 i felt weird during my homm 6 days. Campaign was good and nice but i don't know how to explain but my brain always told me there is something wrong in there. I have played entire campaign + expansion and many multiplayer games and i have returned to homm 5.

After heroes 6 fail, i was sure 7'th game is too becomes fail. This time i have started to force myself for the love 7'th game. Because i tought they cannot fail twice in a row but i wanted to congratulate them. THEY FINALLY MADE WORST HEROES GAME EVER.

7 worst heroes game in my opinion
6 it could be better but not satisfied me after 5
5 is my favourite
4 is good (if i will edit maps, restrict hero level 16 and put every object manually on map)
3 is legendary (i am not playing it much but i give it a respect)
2 i haven't played
1 was fun and i can remember my childhood with it

Why i am telling 7 is the worst?

They started to lose many players since the release of the 6 and they decided to re-arrange 6 with old skillwheel system but they had a great chance because of us. They have a great community but they are stubborn.

Why 5 is still best for me?

Because it was a resurrection after heroes 4. Most of the homm players was giving up with release of 4 but 5 brings the old heroes 3 systems with modern gameplay and graphics for it's time. But, they decided to make major arrangements and created trash game 6. Sorry but i can call trash 6 and 7.

Heroes 7 like a meat without salt to me. I am playing but i always feel weird. At least when i was playing heroes 6, i was saying "this game is good but when i compare it with heroes 5, this game is not good" but when i was playing heroes 7, i was saying "this game is not good"

Idk if you were there during the "opendev" phase, but basically it went like this:

- Ubilimbic: Hello this is what we will do for h7.
- Fans: It's crap, can you change it?
- Ubilimibic: No, we know better than you what is more fun for you.
- Fans: **** off.
- Ubilimbic: Fans are so conservative, now we failed because of them.

Still beating up a dead horse, I see?

By dead horse, I meant about the disbanded and discarded developer of Limbic Entertainment Inc.

Not only Limbic is totally gone but, it has been replaced by another one ever since. Virtuos is its name.

Virtuos is the one that completed Heroes 6 into a full fledge Complete Edition. It may be a totally Ubisoft bound and run division but, I truly believe that they are the ones that have totally remade Heroes 7 also.

I, also, believe that, Virtuos might be the group of expert devs. that will create a Complete Edition of Heroes 7. In time anyway. Virtuos might have done so, already.

It is what can be expected when the good feedback is refused. There were more than several issues that were almost if not unanimously recognized and were easy to fix so not addressing them was frustrating.

The shadow council was supposed to offer transparency and help improve the game through fan feedback but it ended up a complete farce instead. The devs were never interested in feedback and what was shared was way too late to change should it turn out unpopular, imbalanced or plain crappy.

And what happens when the feedback is bad? Release an addon and kill its support a month later. Have fun conservative fans and thank you for your support! We love you too!

Now when H7 failed hard, I wonder if there is a chance to next Heroes game go 2d. I think this is what can save the series and many fans are wishing for this to happen. I know there is bunch of people that think 2d is the song of the past, and it has no place in modern AAA games. But when I say 2d I don't mean pixel art. A bright example here is Worms W.M.D. - the series is somehow similar with its 2d-3d transition to H, and now it went back to it roots. If you think about it the example of how modern 2d H could look like can be found in H. If a web browser game look like this, imagine what they could achieve with proper budget for AAA game.

People thinking 2D is from the past couldn't be more wrong, take a look at Ori and the Blind Forest, full 2D game, out in 2015, critically acclaimed with overwhelming positive reception. For many reasons including strategical ones 2D is superior for Heroes, but Ubi never got it.

And when you think h6 was initially supposed to look like this...

I wonder which way to choose for the future as well.

To be honest, I don't like how the games above look like, with the only exception of Ori (and even then I still prefer H5-H7 looks but I guess it's the matter of custom), which is unfortunately quite chaotic, at least when seen for the first time.

I admit I have my own vision of a perfect Heroes game but I have found out it's quite close to H7, only with adding some new things/features from the previous games. No worries, I know this vision doesn't definitely fit everyone, but I believe it's the same for people who fell in love with for example H3. It would be really difficult to make H8 according to their visions, to overcome the games they love so much. (And it can be said about all the previous games, maybe except H1 as I know nobody loving it the most). Each of them has its target audience and loyal fans.

In conclusion, even as this option would not make many people (including me) happy, the question is whether it's not worth of improvising and big changes, as it was done with H4 and H6.

It's not a question of 2d vs 3d, that's a very narrow point of view. It's something more complex, it's more about perspective, design, colors, stylization, lighting and so on.
