what he says is not dictating anything you know, it's just a statement of fact lol

you don't play the graphics of a game, graphics are not the gameplay (especially in Heroes), it's just the skin the game is in lol

playing the game not because of the gameplay, but because of the graphics, is like reading a book because of the quality of the paper it's printed on lol

You two, fine lads, spared me the trouble of saying it myself.
I've been thinking this for oh, so long, but I never found the nerve to say it, as I was sure it would be useless (i.e. fall on deaf ears). Thanks!

I doubt people actually prefer the old pixelated graphics, but rather the graphical style of those games. They'd probably prefer a good HD rendition of H2 or H3, with full HD graphics.

Exactly this. The perfect style would be Heroes II sprites in HD. Maybe with a bit more fluid animations, but that would be amazing. Gah, Ubi, make this happen. I'll give you all the moneys.

Well we kept telling them over and over again what it is we wanted (be it graphics or gameplay) but their repetitive answers were no. As a result h8 is highly unlikely to happen.

I don't want to be pessimist or anything, but I hope H8 if ever to be released, not by those who obviously don't know how to do it.

For h7 all they had to do was to listen, even being clueless they could have make something decent, with the help of the community feedback and VIPs. But when we said we don't like Ashan, they replied "Ashan is here to stay", when we said we want TotE skill system, they said "no it's flawed", when we said we hate the Spidercult theme for Necropolis they put freaking spider legs on the townscreen, when we said we want lesser schools of magic, they replied "in Ashan there is 7 schools and that's the way it is", etc etc.

That aside, preaching to the choir there, dear AlHazin.

If your game is in 3D  then you lose the possibility of creating unique landscapes and is less satisfactory for mapmakers. That landscape you painted for hours until perfection occurred -more or less, loses its charm once you rotate it, if this feature is available. I looked to some of the best designed H5 maps and they simply don't match some of the H3 landscapes, due to mapmakers inability to set in stone their vision. For me this is very important.

You know pal I had left the forum in the time H7 was released and had absolutely no echoes on what was going on. I had been told that things were going to get better, then when I came back I witnessed the ultimate gameover.

We should just stop speaking about this flawed release and all register for a therapy helping us recover from our injuries.

Ouch.

It's very clear to me now how seemingly spiteful Ubisoft's treatment of the series has been. It's like, they wanted to retain the fan base of the original series, while doing their own thing entirely. Pick one. I understand not wanting to rest on the laurels of someone elses' work... but then for snow's sake, make your own series, instead of using the brand of an established property to piggyback your own snowty ideas that no one's interested in.

It's like back a few years ago when they posted, either in a blog or on Facebook, can't remember which... about how the original Heroes universe was "destroyed" and things like Halflings were "gone forever"... I mean, really? It's like they were spiteful of the franchise. Very bizarre.

They weren't dark or gritty enough. Well, the problem was that they didn't know their fanbase to begin with. Erwan probably thought, wtf is this, I'm gonna make something so much better! You can tell from his quotes.

Is not like this is untrue. They certainly did a better Heroes than the one the community "supposedly" could do by their own.

Maybe, but we can't know until I'm wealthy enough to buy the game, then create a thread "I bought Heroes, what do we do now?".

Now that I think of it, I wouldn't know in which subforum open it anyways.

I think u guys miss the point ( no offense meant here )

The big problem with homm6 and 7 isn't that they are 2d or 3d, or that the factions seem warhammer or warcraft like, or that there are no halfings or trolls, that there are too many dragons or too few whatever...

The problems are:
1) they took money for unfinished barely playable or unplayable products
2) the response time in solving game breaking bugs is measured in months instead of days
3) most of the work on the games after they were released was focused on dlcs or expansion ( more money) instead of polishing, fixing, balancing, improving their dumbsster gameplay
4) total disregard for instructive criticism on how to make game mechanics better
5) never assuming responsability for their fiasco at release
6) never giving eta on bug fix
7) never bothering to actually play the games to see how they feel, how they can balance stuff or how to make them more popular/enjoyable
8) the best game makers, are gamers themselves who understand what it is that makes a game good, and what can make it stand the test of time; ubi's designers are a bunch of random people who have no idea, no clue about that
9)rebooting games only to repeat the same mistakes and add a few more in the next product ( e.g. it would have taken them far lesss time and money to completely start from homm6, and continue bug fixing, remaking tree skills, refiguring balance in accord to the new resource system, and adding upon that more content like maps, factions, lore, whatever; but no they just went ahead and made the fkin joke that is homm7, worse in almost every way than homm6 which is trash in its own right;
10) plenty more but I do not feel like continuing the list since the very thought of what they did to one of my favourite game series makes me quite angry

Actually they did a lot of fixes in H7. The problems were 3gb patches(...) and an ungodly amount of bugs that would have required three times as many patches and thrice as fast. Customers are not required to have the patience of a saint and the vast majority certainly do not. Faulty game? Moving on.

I cannot fault the devs for not giving ETAs, ubi's quality control is notoriously bad. It is obvious that during H7 they didn't even bother. But even if they did, preparing a fix, going through quality control again, perhaps find something else broken in the meantime etc. That can screw up any sense of ETA the devs might have.

It was not possible to continue where H6 left off because limbic did not know BH's code and tampering with it introduced new bugs. I'm sure they could have done more with it given time and money but objectively speaking, H6 was a bad investment. A better way to draw people back into the game was starting a new one. People who have given up on a game will not readily return. They might check up in a year or two if they are feeling generous and/or bored.

They screwed up alright but the above were to be expected.

People bought homm6 because homm5 was a good game. Improving homm6 despite technical difficulties was the way to go in order to restore confidence from fans and then move on to a better project. Because homm6 was a failure, in order for homm7 do be decent the game should have been incredibly good; so they set up a high risk by moving straight to homm7 after leaving homm6 the way that it was. You can't expect people to just straight up buy your new game when the last you made was garbage, not to mention the fact that the new one is worse. It was a lose lose situation before it was even launched.
Best example here is diablo 3 - the game was a major let down, nowhere near the other blizzard major titles which are earning them billions; still though, with a small team they are continously polishing it, paving the way for the new major diablo title to be announced in a couple of years time. This is how u gain confidence, this is how u show - hey we still give a crap about this game and our fans, this is how you show that you learned from your mistakes, and the future looks bright for the series.
In no way dumping a product for which many, many customers payed a lot of cash, in order to make a new one just as crapy is a sound business decision.

Not in the long term but who knows how much more they expected to milk the series. I mean they made H7 with the budget they scraped from the bottom of the barrel if all those recycled models are any indication. Last desperate attempt with little to lose? It is also not unprecedented to use hype and clever marketing to promote a sequel as "all the good parts of the previous minus the bad!" Of course you also need to have something to show for it, otherwise many people won't bite.

...

Surprise!

it's a "sound business decision" if they expected to gain money all over again, without collaborating with the same developer ever again.

They blamed the Black Hole custom engine for the H6 bugs;
Then they used unreal engine 3 and it blew the bugs way harder...

I still contend after all these years that 3D is the worst thing that ever happened to the HoMM franchise.

But anyway, H7 is on sale on Steam, almost 70% off MSRP. I never played H6 and wondered whether H7 was worth buying at this low price. From this thread and aggregate opinion around the interwebs, it seems the answer is no. Sad to see what this once-great franchise has become.

Anyone want to change my impression?

The ironic thing is that the formula for a successful HoMM game is so simple. It's a game furthermore that is perfectly suited for 2D format. It should be easy to put out a great game on a modest budget. Ubisoft just seems unwilling or incapable of doing it.
