So I got a virus...
The pixeluprising redirect thing.
I ran Malwarebytes and Adwarebytes, which reported a couple breaches, and took care of them.
I removed the software which got installed (I was hasty and mistook an exe file for a torrent file
At this point, I still kept being redirected and getting popups, so I reinstalled Opera and reset Firefox to factory settings.
No further occasions of redirection or popups has disrupted my browsing since, and Adwarebytes and Malwarebytes both report I'm clean.
What are the chances that this is just another false positive?

I had a pop-up / redirect thing for more than a year while my AV and anti malware stuff said it couldn't locate anything.
Turned out what I had to do was clean the browsers themselves or something along those lines. Some program did that I think and I never saw anything of it since.
It was btw. not very noticeable I was infected because I had an ad. blocker that caught every time except when my computer was just starting up.
That is why my "home page" became a site with advertisements on it, because I knew I would have to hit refresh as long as the ads were loading.

Go to your uninstall menu in the control panel, it's very likely you'll find apps installed with weird names like amuleC or Faroscanner, these are viruses that change your home page and might cause pop-ups.
If you're like very infected, the best way remains formatting. It boost your PC, and is advised once in a while.

System restore if windows. If you got anything else, you shouldn't have viruses

You have your browser auto-starting on start-up of your PC? With one or more pages loading up when it does?
As you indicated, that's a way to get a "cold" on your PC; your door is still wide open and there's a draft!

No no, if we ignore for a moment the fact that I'm awesome and don't need no bowser in my life, then I will inform mostly honored Maurice that I click the web browser icon after the computer has started, but programs are typically still loading when I do so. Nothing automatic about it though, except what homepage is my first homepage.
I have never considered if it would be smarter to just let the computer sit a little, so far I have extremely rarely been infected, unless we count our secret meetings and the unfortunate consequences they had.

Or get a better computer if it takes minutes to start up and is still starting up after you've already loaded up your browser .

For some reason that is how it has always been with my laptops despite there were supposed to be rather good.
This one is only six years old, but had the issue from the start. It still performs wonderfully though, except that it overheats and shuts down sometimes, so I don't complain.
The one I had before which is 10-11 years old by now also had this issue, but not from the start. In stead it slowly developed and accelerated suddenly to a degree so massive that it was hardly usable anymore.
