Nintendo’s Hardware DNA: A Switch Teardown

The Switch makes a bold statement about Nintendo’s mastery of the art of game control by inheriting the traits of its hardware ancestry.

Many commentators might call the Switch a glorified tablet but, in reality, it’s around 10x more powerful than your average iPad..

So I'm finally grasping the 'get-together' aspect of Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the reason To my surprise my brother who almost stopped playing games aside from Crash Royale really digs it, especially Battle mode. Hadn't had this much brotherly fun since, I don't know, Unreal Tournament 2007? That's magic of Nintendo for ya!

I don't know if anyone here digs casual kiddy racers, but if you don't have it, just buy MK8D. Worth every penny...

Been a while since abybody posted here. Guess there aren't many Switch players on the HC boards

So Switch is a success with almost 20 mln units sold since its lunch (as opposed to overall 13 mln of Wii U sold) which actually is very close to PS4 which sold 20,2 mln units in its first 16 months (Switch has been available for 15 months).

That's good news, as it gives Nintendo just the right impulse to shower us with good games. Switch success is so big, that we'll even see Diablo III on it. Yes, a Blizzard game on Nintendo's console
Octopath Traveler is a smash hit, and can bring forth the renaisannce of classic RPG's (there are rumors of another Bravely Default game for instance). Not to mention all the other mainstream games that are also playable on the console.

I think the best time is yet to come. Super Smash Ultimate releases on 7th of December, which appears to be a must-buy even for non fans, cus the game holds so much content that anyone can find something for him/her.

In the meantime I hope to see Wargroove's release. Well it's not an exclusive, but Switch seems like the perfect place for the spiritual succesor of Advance Wars games.

After that we will have Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which is probably the sole reason why I bought the console in the first place. The game shapes up to be something really great.

And afterwards a classic Pokemon games will be released.

To tell you the truth I haven't played the console that much in the past months, though I did finally finish Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (I sunk around 100 hours in it). Aside from that I played some Mario Kart 8 (still fun) from time to time. It's high time for me to finally give this console the attention it deserves

I picked up a Switch awhile back and have greatly enjoyed it.  I haven't played it too much recently because my wife is enjoying Octopath Traveler.

I have Smash preordered and am greatly looking forward to destroying my friends.

Hit me, I love Nintendo memes!

If we're in the meme departament check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc5gROTdpUQ

(Waluigi omission from Smash rooster has become a classic meme and even subject of rage posts)

Although those memes are targeting the toxic soy infested fanbase of nintendo and not their product.

It does better then doing well. I think Nintendo recognized it as a hit, and they're putting their all into making it a truly great console. It's that kind of vibe I'm getting at least. Maybe reactivation of some cult classics like Advance Wars or F-Zero?

Smash Ultimate will be the ultimate version of the game plus more. So many AAA titles incoming, and a big focus on indie titles. I'm not into this kind of games, but things like Nintendo Labo show that they're also trying to expand in the creative department (like Wii back in the day). Sure a big part of the library are simple remasters but:
a) some games gain a second life with the prospect of being portable
b) some games feel like they were meant for this console in the first place
c) if it's recognized there's a short way from here to some truly interesting exclusives, courtesy of third-party developers

It does feel like it will really pick up from here, whereas PS4 or Xbox One feel a bit stale atm...

Nintendo Direct 13.09.2018 (link).

Well the opinions are divided. Some say it was a great direct, others that it was underwhelming.

I'm personally somewhere in the middle: there wasn't any truly interesting games specifically for me, but there was a lot of interesting announcements nevertheless. Never played either Luigis Mansion or Animal Crossing, but their new entries are huge deals I assume. I really liked how they announced Isabella for Smash, jabaiting people into AC trailer, then showing her in Smash, then back to announcing the game itself. People went crazy. Imo the direct itself wasn't that much later after E3 so I doubted they would show us some big bombs.

I also see there is a lot strategy games this time around, cult classics like Carcassone or Pandemic in digital form look nice. And there's Civilization 6. Or Cities: Skylines which I would never have guessed to see on Switch. The biggest feature here is that those can be played portable.

Atm I'm still mostly interested in Smash Ultimate, and what new stuff they will add, other titles like FE or Pokemon are still further ahead.

And what about the Asmodee Digital department? I know the board-games-into-digital-versions are available on Steam already, but somehow I think Switch is more suited for them then PC. As a board game freak, are you interested OmegaDestroyer?

Nope.  I like the tactile feel of board games and actively avoid playing them on PC.  That said, I will play smart phone versions and one app has replaced the board version: Through the Ages.  The app does a fantastic job of eliminating the tedious overhead of TTA and I have no desire to go back to the board version.

So I'm usually not interested in leaks, but the so-called Grinch Smash Bros Ultimate leak is a pretty interesting internet phenomenon to follow.

Without giving away spoilers a very real looking leak revealed a few never before seen characters for the soon-to-be-released game. If it's a fake, then it's really elaborate as it connects some real-life people, actions taken by the companies involved, and up to this point no actions taken on Nintendo's part (will they take legal actions against companies and the leaker according to NDA?)

It's interesting on many levels:
- to how many lengths can a creator of fake leak go in order to prepare an elaborate leak, assuming this leak IS fake (it looks as real as possible)
- how internet reacts. How people can dig up various clues, go completely crazy about a leak to literally pour all their power to uncover bits and pieces related to it
- what might be the consequences of some irresponsible actions people can take (the leaker shared an image with a friend who apparently made it viral). It's serious, if it's true the leaker, who's involved with the marketing business, might loose any credibility for any future job
- how will Nintendo react. I believe it is prime time for the next Nintendo Smash-related Direct (rumors say somewhere between 7-12.11). Will they "go with the show" and pretend nothing happened or postpone it?

Smash Bros Ultimate is a game currently generating the most hype when it comes to Nintendo games. I mentioned before that I really got into this whole hype. I've watched a lot of reaction videos, I kinda even started to recognize the most prominent streamers in this community (one called Etika even made an interesting social experiment a couple of days ago). Which is crazy as I'm not a stream watcher.

I'm curious about Switch, but nobody I know owns one. It's not cheap here either, but I like its concept and the repertoire of games seems to be getting broader and broader, which is a very nice directive from Nintendo, imho.

So, not long until the system seller Smash Bros Ultimate is released. I actually bought the Limited Edition, buying the "bundle" is a nice deal as you're getting the Gamecube controller + adapter cheaper then buying separately. I decided it will be my Christmas present, so I probably won't play it until holiday. It's cool, I still have a lot of games to finish.

Switch is going strong. It was the best selling console on Black Friday, and Pokemon Let's Go games also topped the sales. Future looks bright
