Yeah, they've been going with this strategy for years now

In other news, how is it so that FE: Three Houses releases so close to Age of Wonders Planetfall? Life is hard

They went full school/squad simulator this time around. Time will tell if this is a good thing. I personally dislike the whole sim/marriage/create your characters aspect of previous games, but this is something a lot of people enjoy so they are pushing it (some even said that waifu simulator is what saved the series ). I'd rather play pure strategy battles then this whole overblown sim in-between, but it might be interesting to see how the plot shapes in the second chapter. I mean, the whole investment in your squad also serves as a plot device, you will probably feel even more attached to your unit rooster.

Wtf is this?

Nintendo Switch Lite announced

I don't get what is the point of this as Nintendo Switch perfectly also fits the role of a handheld device. Another thing is that this really shows denying in reality is confirming cus that is what Nintendo was doing when asked about new version of Switch. Yeah I know it's the same strategy they had with 3DS and 2DS, but this is a bit over-the-top. Hope it doesn't have better specs though, that would be disappointing a bit.

Must say the S&S edition looks quite nice though...

EDIT: On second thought, judging by peoples reactions, this is probably directed for kids or parents who want a second console to stop their children from bickering about who gets to play.

EDIT 2: Supposedly it also has better battery life.

It is not for us, that is the true
I don't get it either.

I just want a Switch Pro. Something more powerful. Man, my Oneplus 6T is a better console spec wise than the switch

But hey! It fits what they have been doing since the 3DS time.

Nah, leave the power race to PS/Xbox. Switch power does not bother me as long as the games are unique and enjoyable.

PS: Though there is a hint Nintendo might actually be tweaking the processor of the classic Switch a bit. It might or might not make for any visible changes in performance but even so this will be added to the newly produced devices...

PS 2: Actually I might be slightly interested in the console. I mean, my family members enjoy playing the Switch, so it might be a good option. We could share some games.

Ok so I'm past the school year in FE: Three Houses. Too early to judge the game fully as I still need to see the conclusion of Black Eagles route, but I can already say this will probably be one of my fav FE games. I don't think any FE game will ever beat Radiant Dawn which simply reached godhood in me eyes, but the Switch game is definately high tier. It definately has the polish, tone, customization options (without being overcomplicated) and epicness that make it great. The only thing I actually find not to my liking is, to my surprise, the battalions system. Maybe it's because I don't want to bother with it too much, or maybe it's because I'm playing on Normal, but I don't see any point in using them. They probably shine on Hard diffculty where you need to disable more enemy troops to stay alive...

I haven’t stopped playing this game since it came out

Definitely a 10/10 for me! This is like a breath of wild kind of change in terms of the series. I love how the classes work and the way the weapon proficiency ties in. The three houses - game of thrones like vibe - is very nice throughout the game. Replay value is higher than any FE game before. The persona 5 elements are super cool and I love the anime cutscenes. My only strife was the difficulty cause I feel like I somewhat  breezed through it on Hard my first go around, but lunatic mode is on its way in a free patch so

I went with Claude, the golden deers first. Archery is sweet and a bow lord was too enticing. Wasn’t crazy about his students and failed to recruit anyone from the other houses lol. But I made due and Claude was a super awesome lord who’s final class was perfect! Immediately started a new one when I beat it lol this time with dimitri. His class is way more my style with foot soldiers.

Looking forward to their dlc. Picking up the season pass for sure.

@The_Green_Drag

Do you use battalions?

I actually went with recruiting a few extra characters from other houses: Leonie cus she's waifu material (probably one of my favs in the game, and a pretty good mounted archer to boot) and it makes sense story wise as she's a follower of Jeralt; Ingrid to get a Pegasus Knight; Ashe cus he has in-built lockpicking and Raphael cus his one of the few Armored/Fortress Knights matrial in the game (actually it turned out I didn't need him afterall). You can very well go-through with only your house members, but getting specific skills to recruit them is part of the fun and sth that gave me purpose when venturing the Monastery halls.

The game is yet again unforgiving when it comes to exploration, it's easy to miss out on many things like relation-boosting items or wrong dialogue choices.

Support conversations aren't mu cup of tea, I do them rather from a completionist standpoint, but I must say some of the stories are enjoyable, and character interactions seem more mature and less quirky then in previous games (Bernadetta being the only exception, but at least there is a reason for it). Some are pretty interesting because many character stories intermingle after their nobility and commoners relations at root. They did a pretty good job in making the world feel Game of Throny, but the general morale from this game is not to repeat the mistakes of your "fathers"...

I assign battalions, but I don’t really use them in battle. They give your units extra bonuses so I just collect them and level them up for the extra perks. The gambit has only ever been useful for units with too high speed to hit. They carry over into new game plus btw. So that’s how you’re suppose to kill the death knight early on I think.

I tried recruiting people on my first play through, but failed Petra and Felix are my favorite two but I didn’t have the skills they wanted. I actually didn’t figure out how to raise Byleth’s weapon skills till my second play through haha. Now that I know how I’ve recruited Petra  Leonie was on my top chicks last game. Makes for a really great bow knight like you said. She looks cool after the time skip too. I also picked up that Cyril guy who they randomly introduced out of nowhere. He’s got that famous aptitude ability for higher level growth.

Well, Cyril is Rhea's sidekick and he makes various chores like cleaning around the Monastery so he wasn't anonymus. You can meet him in Explore. But that didn't stop me from a wtf moment when I've seen him in one of the missions as a Wyvern Rider (don't want to spoil too much, because I see you didn't take the Eagle route yet). As you say, his probably the traditional underdog FE character.

Faculty training, the thing that raises your protagonist skills, is was actually my main focus in the Monastery. With the limited training options, and the fact that the characters I picked for recruiting had ability requirements completly outside my focus (for example Lance or Heavy Armor), it was pretty tricky. It's funny how I also needed to train Axe skills later on just to make the Hero class available On a bright side later on you don't actually have anything to spend your activity points on either way.

The only thing I dislike about the class system is how long it takes to advance a class. I mean if you want to master the classes in order to get their permanent boosts it takes a lot of grind to do so, alas as always, I can't wait to make my units look badass when the opportunity arises so I discard the older ones... maybe there's a way to do it faster?

You're thinking of Seteth the green haired dude! Cyril is the shorter darker skinned guy. You can recruit him with just a level requirement IIRC.

Yeah I finally unlocked the facility training the second go-around. Definitely makes recruiting classmates A LOT easier. As I got closer to the end of part one during my Golden Deer run I was rushing to those stroy missions cause it was getting really good. I'm taking my time more with this play through.

I do think the requirements could be toned down. Slyvain just got to twenty for me and I wanna make him a hero but he needs a B in sword. I focued too much on the axe requirement. They could either lower requirements or maybe alternate them a bit? Like maybe a B level in Axe OR Sword plus a C in the other. I also with they made more Master classes, I feel like the swordmaster/assassin/hero classes only have that mortal servant one to aim for.

One thing I'm also trying to do this time around is actually master all the classes i use.

Na-ah. Just play the Eagle route and see what happens ;P

You can try to take certifications before reaching the required skill level. There's a lower percent to pass it, but I actually managed to do it many times with like 67 and even 50% chance. Just don't do game resets, it won't work. If a character does not pass it, you can try in another week. Waiting for a class change wouldn't be that bothersome if it wasn't for the fact that you loose precious class mastery expierience points you could gain if you actually changed to the class already.

And yeah, your right: there isn't that much of a choice for many characters when it comes to Mastery classes. Because of the steep requirements there isn't much of a flexibility for them. You either will have to focus on one route or give up Mastery class altogether: for instance there is no Master class choice for either Dark Bishop or Bishop... so you have to leave them as is. And Swordmaster only has Mortal Savant choice which is pretty tricky as you need to have high Reason skill, whereas traditionaly Sword oriented units focus on Dex/Spd and not Mag. Only Paladin actually has something of a choice: he/she can either become Great Knight (not easy but doable), Dark/Holy Knight or even a Bow Knight.

Oh that’s interesting. Love that three stories in one aspect even more!

I feel like what they were going for is to add mobility with the master classes. So the bishop and dark bishop are suppose to go for holy and dark knights I guess? I turned the blue haired chick from the golden deer house into a holy knight after being a bishop. Worked really well but she did lose her +5 to heal which was a bummer. Idk what dark bishops do yet.

The fact you can dismount is really cool, but I wish there was more of a point to it than just losing the ‘cavalry’ status.

Hopefully we’ll see some more master classes in dlc. Wouldn’t mind a sort of pack that gave some master classes and maybe a few more advanced.

Yeah but the "horse" master classes are rather melee oriented, so I don't know how a unit that excels in magic works with skills like lance or riding. I mean you get the mobility of a mounetd unit, but it's probably the only pro, as they're probably useless on front lines. This would need some experimentation, but I'm fine with leaving my Bishop a Bishop etc...

EDIT: Ok, so I've beaten the first route but it was underwhelming. Sure, I wouldn't want to play for another 40 hours, but 6 missions, really? And the story felt pretty rushed: kill/pacify all those who you didn't recruit and the bad guy. The final battle also wasn't that epic like in previous games, although at least the boss isn't a one-shot kill like in previous games. Conclusion was pretty straightforward. I mean, the idea of branching roots is cool, but it all somehow doesn't felt satysfing. Now I undertsand why some people claimed that post-Monastery part is less engaging. Or maybe simply the Black Eagles route isn't that interesting? I want to at least try the Seiros route also, maybe I'll turn out more interesting?

Overall, based on what I played so far the game is 8-/10 for me.

Yeah I totally agree. They really went full force on the 'Game of Thrones' aspect, all the way down to a rushed ending

I never counted but is it really only 6 maps after the time gap?? For The golden deer path I had similar reactions. It was really cool seeing everyone come back with a different, older portrait. I thought it was weird we went back to the professor/student way of doing things after everyone is now a veteran fighter. And they really kicked Dimitri to the side with him only showing up or being mentioned during that reunion battle. We were definitely moving way too fast in terms of story progression. The 'other' end part after you deal with the final house felt SUPER rushed. And I cringed how often they said the phrase 'Those who slither in the Dark', like wwow call them something shorter ffs after youve established they slither in the dark lol.

I can look past the story elements though. That is just personal thing for me as I never got invested in any of the FE stories outside of a few older ones. I enjoyed most of this story anyways, but the ended coulda taken some more time to be fleshed out. My biggest gripe - linking back to my difficulty complaint, is the lack of BIG battlefields. That wont change with a harder difficulty unfortunately, but even the castle siege maps felts tiny compared to past games.

I think your 8/10 is a good rating. I'd bump it up to 8.5 or 9 if I can be bias
