Very poor and foot designed campaigns, imo. At least for me, if plot and design are not challenging, I just quickly close the messages, so can't say I enjoyed them. It was a surprise for me that the guys who created that amazing editor were the ones using it the worst. But a special note for AB campaigns, those had some great moments in.

I recently read some old interview about Heroes Chronicles, links can be found elsewhere on this forum, and it seemed 3DO requested they released a series of stand alone stories, which had to be rushed out. So I guess you can find the reasons for the poor design etc. Still I think it's funny if the stories were intended as stand alone stories, which they partly are, that they did indeed connect them all.
Also many has commented on their order, and the fact they seem to be released in a different order than their actual time-line, although I also recall and interview where they said, there weren't any actual time-line (makes little sense to me). But you can easily find the order of the games by searching for it.

About the editor the think Salamandre's point also was the case with the H4 editor. Comparing the official campaigns with most of the fan made ones, they just really didn't use the full potential of those editors, despite being the creators.

So maybe someone will be crazy enough to 'rewrite' these campaigns to make design richer and improve playability?

Here are all the Chronicles in ".h3c" format. Open them as H3 campaigns and enjoy them with the HD mod on.

Good but you must add Tarnum portraits! Playing without it is nonsense :-) You play Craig Hack named Tarnum :-) Because its only replacing! Here is topic:
HCh
But it needs some content. Playing it in custom option only with text and Tarnum portraits and weak maps is rather boring. Mod is meeded with new content.

Well, it "only" took me 2 years to actually start playing...

But I did. And I finished 1st part (Warlords of Wastelands) today on Impossible difficulty (all maps) - 1st playthrough, so consider this a blind play.

Quick impressions:

1. I see why Chronicles has been raged upon. It's only a single, simple campaign (fairly long, though). Sold as a separate game in times were cash grabs known as DLC weren't there.

2. My score:

3. Despite being easy, it was fun. And it actually managed to suck me in. I'm a big sucker for downfall stories.

4. I liked the story and how you actually connect to Tarnum during his mad quest. I liked that it was not a goody two shoe tale like Restoration of Erathia. Tarnum turned quite psycho at the end with all the slaughter of innocents and it felt refreshing. I liked his banters with his commanders and his little romance plot, but I'm pretty sure I missed its resolution. Did his lover die?

5. I actually had to pause before last castle (or objective, w/e) with a huge army and spam end turn for a couple weeks to read the rest of the story (and reload afterwards to finish the mission in "regular time". I feel it has been dragged over an unnecessary amount of turns. If you're rushing it, you'll miss 2/3 of the events. LAME.

6. I wasn't offered Wisdom and any of schools of magic on Tarnum and Gurnisson, so I couldn't do the usual Town Portal/Fly/DD campaign cheese. However, since my Tarnum (and my secondary Gurnisson) reached 20 ATT by mission three, and both knew Expert Artillery, Tactics and Logistics almost from the beginning, it was a breeze. The Ballista (and artillery skill) is excellent for campaigns like these, where your hero can get ridiculous amounts of ATT (I finished with almost 40 ATT with no artifacts equipped). It was on par with 80 Orcs (with Archery)! I'm pretty sure I'll try to get Artillery on my heroes on other Chronicles campaigns as well, and at least on Tarnum.

7. I recruited Adrienne once two additional heroes could carry-over in addition to Tarnum. It was actually pretty fun to get her to high SP/KN, she'd turn out even better than Gurnisson early game with her Inferno and Fire wall spells. Still, no Earth magic was offered. Bummer.

8. With Tarnum, Gurnisson and Adrienne, all Lvl 20+, I'd clear most of an XL map within a week or two. Without town portal. Lol.

9. The game trolled me hard offered my Gurnisson a choice between wisdom and earth magic for the last skill slot on level up.

10. The maps themselves were nicely made and I liked them aesthetically.

11. I missed Price of Loyalty scale of epicness. The enemies were mostly building up from scratch with generic heroes, no extra troops. Is that a challenge to a lvl 25 Barbarian with 30+ ATT and an offense specialty? nope. Where's a Throng of Titans for me to stomp?

12. Looking forward to playing the next part. Actually, it felt much better than I thought it will. A pretty nice game, in modern times it would be a DLC that would generate 0 rage and a lot of praise. That's what HOMM3 campaign should be: a STORY. Not a random mish-mash of maps with chilidsh plot (Sorry, ROE fans, I think ROE campaigns were absolutely dismal).

6/10 perhaps?

By the way, campaigns like these actually make magic beat might. Since you have to start over with armies but Implosion and 20+ SP sticks with you, lol. In 2nd chapter, I'll look forward to building magic heroes rather than might ones. I'll try to slap artillery on top, though. It makes your heroes pretty much troop independent while retaining the ability to clear most neutrals from day one, no matter how big they are (with some AI manipulation if necessary). You can beat most AI heroes on your way as well. Estates is also pretty nice on Impossible difficulty if you have it on 3+ heroes. I didn't need it for Stronghold since Behemots week 1 are easy even on Impossible when you start with overpowered lvl20 Barbarian twins, but for things like Castle or Tower I think I will

A quick request: please don't spoil me the plot

Yes, I liked the story progression. And I too was confused about his romance, it seems that she got killed during one of her raids. Unfortunately, in this series you have to take your time if you want to read the whole story - I certainly remember this happening in conquest of the underworld and master of the elements.

So next is.. conquest of the underworld? Revolt of the beastmasters?

Conquest of the Underworld, I believe. Already installing it.

It would be fun if I could keep this 38 ATT Barb, lol. He literally trampled everything in sight, armies 10 times bigger than his fell like flies with no loses

lol alas you were burned by got a botched version, unfortunately some versions do not contain the resolution to that particular plot in map 4 because of a silly error or **** up lol

here is the event which you were blocked, day 47 of map 4 lol

Quote:
A scout returns and nervously gives you bad news.

The Wizards of Bracaduun have plucked the thorn from their backside.  Yalla was captured while robbing a Bracaduun Gold Mine - apparently, it was a trap she couldn't resist.  The scout witnessed Yalla's public execution.  She boldly stood up to her captors and spat in face of the spellcaster who conjured the lightning that killed her.

You clench your fists and demand to be alone.  For hours you take your axe to the nearest trees, felling the entire grove, and then chopping them into pieces too small to even make good firewood.  All the while you picture them wearing the colorful robes of a Wizard.

also a comment or two,

in that campaign I had a great laugh because I recruited Rabak in map 1 after I beat him, thus I was able to have Rabak (the guy who Tarnum hated his guts) as my hero all the way until map 8 when he gets poisoned with the other captains, I do not blame Tarnum for the poison there as Rabak certainly got some mileage he did not deserve lol

did you notice that the villain Kurl from map 3 reappears in map 8 as the enemy commander, I thought that was an interesting detail lol

also if you are in map 3 do you remember they say "Kurl despises Barbarians more than any Wizard, although we don't know why" without ever explaining why, well it is actually revealed why in Kurl's bio, which you cannot read without hacking lol,

Quote:
Descendent of the great Barbarian King Jarg, he despises his heritage and does everything he can to distance himself from it. Hence, he endured the torments of his fellow students to become a Wizard. Now, he rules over the same Barbarians he hates.

therefore he was descended of Jarg just like Tarnum, except unlike Tarnum he decided it was best to be a nasty brown noser cheers lol

Thanks I'm playing the GOG version. No HD mod hurts, but I'm getting things done the way they are intended haha.

It's quite a shame that in the 1st campaign the fact that Tarnum got killed by Gryphonheart when invading Erathia is barely mentioned. It would be a great ultimate map for the campaign. Or even a campaign of its own.

Join our Chronicles gang, Joonas! I've already inspired Elvin to reinstall Chronicles

Golden rule: anything below Impossible is a NO GO! Those maps are easy enough. Impossible does add a certain micromanagement factor in early missions

I'm on Conquest of the Underworld now. Since Tarnum is a ballista specialist in this campaign, Artillery came free. You start with Cuthbert (which is excellent for this role - magic hero with Estates? yes please) and I recruited Caitlin as my 3rd (+350 gold is like an advanced estates and she gets intelligence from the start). If I manage to get estates on both my secondaries I'll have +1350 gold per day. Yay. Since there will likely be plenty of Inferno castles, they will both rack up a lot of +1 SP freebies from Order of Fire buildings. I expect them to kick butt with magic later on.

This time, I got Earth magic from a hut and it's already on all my heroes. Tarnum got wisdom on 6th (I guess it was banned in the previous campaign because heroes ALWAYS get wisdom on every 6th level unless you specifically ban the skill) so... town portal cheese, here I come.

Unfortunately Tarnum starts (as all Knights) with useless Leadership skill so I'd go for this:

1. Leadership (bleh)
2. Logistics (duh)
3. Pathfinding (I'm guessing a lot of sand in dungeons lol)
4. Wisdom
5. Earth Magic (TP+slow+implo kthxbai)
6. Tactics
7. Offense
8. Artillery

In a perfect world I'd dump Leadership for Estates. Armorer would be great too if the missions were harder but I think getting armies up and running faster is more fun.

Well one thing are programmer and other map designers, so they weren't the same people.

Also probably Heroes Chronicles was not made in-house by the H3 team; they follow the pattern of "outsourced" campaign expansions (Even Starcraft had two)
