here have something interesting for a special bonus, it is the official design document of The Immortal Hero which gives the premise of Tarnum lol

Quote:
The Immortal Hero

This individual is seeking redemption, whether or not they want to.  They can be either male or female, and from any background.  The only requirement is that they are being punished for some very serious misdeeds.  The misdeeds cannot be intentional, but rather a product of misdirected emotions or education.  The Immortal Hero must also show signs of being able to repent - no matte how long it may take them.

The Immortal Hero is created when one such person seeks entrance into Paradise soon after their death.  The Ancestors deem this person unworthy of entering and cast them from Paradise without explanation.  None is ever really given, the individual must figure things out for themselves.  The Hero is placed back on the planet of their origin and given little information.

"You are Immortal, you can be slain, but will rise again.  If you disobey our commands you will be sent to Hell to suffer eternal torment.  This is your last chance."  Those are the words spoken to each Immortal Hero as they land back on the planet.

The path of redemption is a long and tiring one.  First, the Hero must figure out why they have been cast from Paradise.  This can be a lengthy process in and of itself.  Second they must begin to see the error of their ways, discovering where they crossed the line or made a poor decision.  Third, they must overcome what they had hated or feared so.  Fourth, they must feel guilt and a desire to make amends for their wrong doings.  If possible, they must fix the situation they created.  It can take centuries to fix one poor decision.  Finally, they must perform heroic deeds of good – without instruction from the Ancestors.  This is vital, for anything done at the request of the Ancestors does not count for this final part.

There can be many Immortal Heroes at any given time, or none.  Although that has never happened, people seem to have limitless capabilities for screwing up.  When they are allowed to return to Paradise they become an Ancestor.  For who better to judge the ones coming, than someone who has done terrible wrongs and then fixed them?  After an Ancestor is replaced, they are allowed to finally enter Paradise proper, and enjoy the rest of eternity in blissful happiness.

Right now there is Tarnum, a Barbarian who taught his people the wrong path.  He must restore the Barbarian culture before being allowed to return to Paradise.  So far he has faced his hatred, understood his wrong actions and decisions and has performed several heroic tasks on his own.

did you remember in the World Tree there was a strange events with no explanation, about Vorr being an ancient Barbarian King, lol

Quote:
To my shock, Vorr is not a Barbarian chief as I suspected, but an Ancestor!

How could this be?  How could one of the Ancestors be behind all this trouble?

One of the wisest shaman, an old man named Addar, brought this terrible news.  Unfortunately, he couldn't explain why Vorr has teamed with the Necromancers to destroy the World Tree, but he could tell me a little about Vorr's rise to power.

In all the years I have dealt with the Ancestors as the Immortal Hero, I never heard the name Vorr.

I said, "I have never heard the Ancestors called by name.  They have always been, collectively, the Ancestors, have they not?"

"True, but recently a brutal tribe of Barbarians from a land called Krewlod have turned one of their ancient kings into a war god, and they make sacrifices to him.  They felt they needed a perfect leader to inspire them to greatness once again.  Apparently, one of the Ancestors accepted this worship, drew power from it, and took on the form of this war god.  He even gave himself a name - Vorr," said Addar.

Krewlod was a familiar name.  It was the new name given to my homeland.  Could this ancient Barbarian King have been me?  Could my people be modeling their brutality after my own actions?

I dismissed the shaman, unable to continue this conversation right now.

Quote:
I rode up next to Addar this morning, finally prepared to face the truth of Vorr's origins.

"Shaman, tell me more about Vorr," I said.

"Well, in all the stories that I know, there is only one other Vorr - a warrior who lived in the early days of our people.  With an axe in his hand, there was no force that could stand in his way.  He had the strength of thirty men, and whenever he commanded an army victory was certain.  Vorr also enjoyed the adoration of his people - perhaps too much.

"For years they praised him and gave him their love, until one year they grew bored.  They turned their interests toward a young man who could run and swim faster and farther than any other.  Vorr grew angry and jealous and challenged this young man to a race around the world.  Granted, Vorr was very strong, but his power was on the battlefield.  For a year and a day the two raced around the world, shoulder-to-shoulder the entire way until..."

"What?" I said.

"Just before they reached the finish line, the young runner pulled out in front.  Vorr knew he had lost, so, he pulled out his axe and lopped off the young man's head right in front of everyone.  A shameful end."

"What happened to Vorr?"

"He tried to win back his people's love by forcing them.  He conquered them and became a much unloved king.  He died bitter and old, and in his bed."

I didn't see how this Vorr could possibly be one of the Ancestors.  Perhaps the name is a coincidence.

again to go back,

Quote:

well now you will understand what he was on about and how he went crazy, King Vorr was a previous Immortal Hero before Tarnum for his nasty crimes and then became an Ancestor, and then his former self was worshipped as an evil god which corrupted him, until you kicked his arse in the campaign lol

Literally ancestors huh. Seems Tarnum wasn't the first barbarian tyrant after all. But how did they remember that guy before Tarnum's time(when they didn't even remember Tarnum's name) and how didn't Tarnum know him when he had gathered all their bards? I mean it's not impossible but it seems unlikely.

well it's no different in real world history where we only remember bits and pieces from random scraps we dig up over time mate, but there are some points to bear in mind,
first is that it's not really clear that they forgot Tarnum's name, bear in mind that many children were actually named after Tarnum so it is a common name in Antagarich which people would not blink twice about, like Adolf, Donald, Matt or Killary lol

also they also remembered who Jarg the Conqueror was in Heroes 4, so they don't have a big problem remembering old kings, probably just the ones who were **** lol

some people always remembered who Tarnum was, in the Conquest of the Underworld Mensor figured out who he is and that lore was passed down to his descendant, who is the bloke narrating the campaigns lol

Quote:
Few people who have met the Immortal Hero have known his real identity, and my ancestor was one of the first to learn his secret.  It was difficult for Tarnum to stay focused on his goal when someone was digging into his dark past, but he continued his search for the Pendant of Second Sight.

Tarnum was the worst Barbarian Tyrant of the lot and I think there was a bit of a unique campaign to suppress or erase his history going on, not only from the barbarians (who he was embarrassing, because he got killed by a muppet upstart knight) but also from Erathia (who would be embarrassed that their ancient queen was a barbarian) and even Tarnum massaging the narrative away himself (who was just plain embarrassed) lol

Quote:
"It's public knowledge that Rion Gryphonheart rescued Allison's mother from a little village.  What people don't know is that the sister of the Barbarian King lived in that village," I said.

"I don't believe you!"

"Believe me!  I wonder what would happen if everyone found out that Queen Allison is the niece of Tarnum the Barbarian Tyrant?  Mayhem, I would think.  Certainly, Allison would lose her head.  Everything I have said can be confirmed, you know I'm not lying."

Mensor left the tent, stunned and confused.  Even though I hoped it was enough to get the spy to leave me alone, I still wasn't going to get any sleep tonight.

ooh dear me lol

about how Tarnum never knew the story of Vorr, well Vorr had already turned into a cautionary fable rather than a historical account, plus it was an unfamiliar tribe who remembered him, so probably they remembered him after Tarnum died somewhow through new archeology or something lol

you can talk about Jarg or Vorr because who cares, they did not have a sister shagging your king, lol

Maybe Vorr was after Tarnum?

In Revolt of Beastmasters, he hired Barbarians to fight against Erathia Mad King Army.

In World of Tree, Barbarian Tribes seems to be inspired by Tarnum. Tarnum had to use pendant of total recall to clear mind of Barbarians.

for sure, although Gavin Magnus is not related to the Ancestors, he has his immortality from some other very mysterious source, so as far as we know there was only Tarnum, Vorr and the other Ancestors (at least two) lol

there are other immortals from the history of the series, but they are again not really connected to this elaborate system Tarnum is part of lol

it's really telling that the Ancestors didn't bother their arse to make Gelu or Kilgor into Immortal Heroes to atone for their terrible sins, either they were not even bothered because those guys were too irredeemable, or not even they could put back the atoms together from that bomb hahahahaha lol

Gavin Magnus I'd been curious for a long time but not even Solmyr had a hint. Gavin must have known a thing or two.

rather I don't think even he had a clue, check the hidden history of him from the developers lol

Quote:
Gavin Magnus

Past:
Gavin Magnus's past is unknown even to himself.  He was found half-dead in a snow bank by a forester.  Once he recovered, he couldn't remember where he came from or even how he got into the mountains.  All he could recall was his name.  He remained in a nearby village for years attempting to determine if he had any skills.  It wasn't until the Tyrant King's army stormed through the village, killing everyone, that Gavin discovered he could use magic.  He put up a good fight, but in the end the Barbarians overran him.  But Gavin woke.  That's when he realized he was very different from everyone else - he was immortal.  The Tyrant King was defeated only a few short years later, but by that time Gavin had entered a secret school of sorcery and due to his tremendous innate ability with magic became the school's master.  After the Tyrant King's fall, magic users like Gavin were free to practice the arts in public again, so Gavin spent the next few years forging the Kingdom of Bracada, a place where magic was respected above all else, and sat on Bracada's throne for centuries.

Present:
By the time Reckoning came, Gavin had seen and done everything.  So, he refused to pass through the portals into the new world.  He truly believed a force as destructive as the Reckoning would destroy him, but in the end he was wrong.  Although he still has vivid, painful memories of his body being disintegrated, he woke up in this new world whole again.  His mind snapped.  He had to have a purpose.  Someone as indestructible can't be a fluke.  Perhaps he hadn't been thinking large enough.  One world was destroyed because of Mankind's chaotic idiocy.  And surviving the Reckoning proves that he is not human.  Perhaps he never had been human.  So, who better to rule the world, and to control it.  It was time someone establishes order to the universe.

Personality:
Gavin is a serious, meticulous and thoughtful man.  He has lived longer than anyone should have and has seen many things in his long life.  He has a weary and tired look about him, and is often described as sad.  Over the years, he has had many wives but no children and still has no connection to the real world.  Now, after the Reckoning, his behavior has become high-strung and even more obsessive/compulsive than ever.

Appearance:
Gavin is a large man, standing about 6'3" and weighing some 230 lbs.  He appears to be in his mid-thirties even though he's much older.  He has always been muscular and thick - perhaps suggesting Barbarian blood.  His hair is brown is cut neat, short, and perfect.  He is always clean shaven (because he shaves three times a day).  He wears the robes of a Wizard, usually red, and a gold diadem encrusted with a single ruby to signify his position.  Gavin is so meticulously neat that everything around him is in perfect order at all times.

Finished Revolt of the Beastmasters.

(better up your game Elvin! I win again albeit only by 5 days.)

1. First time since Warlords where there was some darkness and atmosphere around. I applaud that. But still, not as good as Warlords. I'd rate it 2nd best, though.

2. Difficulty wise, it wasn't too hard, but the mission 7 could be annoying if I didn't prepare my heroes with all the stat boosters along the way.

3. It was also the first Chronicles game with Tarnum featuring a crappy speciality and starting with resistance which is a meh skill in my book. This made me ignore Tarnum entirely. I recruited Gerwulf (Ballista) and Andra (Intelligence) instead. Tarnum would remain an errand boy for picking resources.

4. Gerwulf turned out nearly perfect: Offense, Armorer, Logistics, Earth, Wisdom, Tactics, Artillery, Pathfinding. I'd ditch the last skill in favor of something better, but that would do.

5. Andra's special was ridiculous. In last mission she had 600 mana lol. Early on it would prove invalueable with chain lightning spam 24/7. Also she got ballistics. While it may seem useless on a magical secondary, it's far from useless. It allows you to cast 1st in a siege, no matter how slow your units are. So you can bring 4 stacks of 1 gnoll, lose three to towers and launch a devastating chain lightning / meteor shower, then surrender or flee. And there's plenty of powerful heroes camping in towns in this campaign, so it turned amazing at times. Intelligence speciality really makes a difference in Chronicles.

6. Gerwulf would reach 41 ATT in his last mission. Not too shabby for a Beastmaster. His ballista was ridiculous.

7. The 7th mission would be a massive pain: introducing a couple of heroes with 20+ in all stats swarming your lands. Fortunately, my heroes were better, but I was on a brink of losing the game when Sylvia came near Tarnum's castle, and Tarnum was weak as a kitten compared to her. Fortunately, she decided flagging dwellings is more important, and Tarnum fled. Gerwulf owned her shortly after, and then I unleashed my Gerwulf/Andra combo to kill all the remaining 20+ allstat heroes. After that the mission was trivial.

8. No town portal, no fly, no dd, but fortunately my heroes were rocking Logistics.

9. I'd rate it 6/10, it was fun, if somewhat easy, but it did suck me in a bit.

That mission was equal amounts of fun and frustration It's funny how the last mission turned out so anticlimactic after such a glorious mission. All those crazy heroes crawling all over the place! I made the mistake of not building up the south town so I could not defend it properly. But then I had developed the stronghold and I could not keep it when Sylvia came by sea with a large army. Tarnum was chasing one threat after another so I didn't risk heading across the sea for a while.

Yeah, mission 8 was very lame. Gryphonheart didn't have much stats and his army wasn't that big. I believe I killed him by the end of 3rd week.

I will be taking a break from Chronicles now... gotta beat Shadow of Death and Armageddon's blade on Impossible. Since IIRC those campaigns are harder and don't allow as much cheese as Chronicles, it will probably take me some time.

bootleg versions of Dark Tarnum and give blood for the blood god

Lol. I find your thoughts interesting though, I had not considered chronicles on a timeline and how each could have influenced certain factions and events.

And finally I finished the sword of frost. I had a rocky start where I was collecting my skills basic by basic(didn't get any on expert for a while) but in the end it was worth it: A Tarnum with artillery, air/earth, wisdom and logistics. Highlight of the playthrough was when Gelu appeared behind a teleporter at the end of turn 1 and I took him down his crystal dragon and sharpshooters with a well placed chain lightning So here I was day 2 with an azure dragon, Gelu's boots of speed and armageddon's blade. Greatness!

Clash of dragons and the sword of frost remain my favourites in the series. I loved reading the text boxes and some of the missions had challenging moments. Tarnum's overlord antics were fun ^^

To this day the chronicles remain my favorite campaigns from Heroes III universe.
I love the stories of Tarnum and the moments he has with his enemies, captives, captains etc ...
I mostly love the revolt of the beastmasters and the sword of frost campaigns because of the depth at which the character of Tarnum is portrayed and the things he does, specially the effect they have on the world.

For me the chronicles weren't easy on impossible. Yeah the first few maps were a bit hard and the later ones were easier if you had previous heroes games campaign experience. At that time I did not. I had to learn the hard way that you can transfer your captains, that you can have useless skills like eagle eye, that not taking all the attack and defense points may cost you dearly.
I had to restart the campaigns from scratch sometimes even if I was on map 4 or beyond.

BUT the biggest beauty was ... it was never boring to go and play it again and again and again, thus learning the game and understanding that each part of the map had it's own sense.
I know that the chronicles might have been more challenging but if you are in it for the story, you will most likely not be disappointed.
And for those that are not so much for the story, they wont even have a custom map option, so they would never buy chronicles for that matter and will just stick to normal Heroes III.

Update! Took me a year to play through Armageddon's Blade, Shadow of Death and HOTA campaigns on impossible, but I did finish it eventually. And thus I got back to Chronicles. My goal of finishing all HoMM3 campaigns is at hand.

Clash of the dragons score:

Unfortunately it has been so long that Elvin deleted his scores & forgotten his playthroughs! So yeah, no competition this time. Sadpanda.

General thoughts:

1. This must have been rushed or otherwise not enough people were working on this. At least several of the maps here were just an "S" style map with a single foe and some garrisons. Compare this to the time it must have took them to develop "Conquest of the underworld" campaign with those huge, rich maps. It is immersion breaking; doesn't feel like a proper epic adventure until you get to the last two missions.

2. It feels like a rehash of "Dragon Slayer" but with enemies this time. Once again you fight Crystal Dragons, Rust Dragons and Azure Dragons as "theme" of each mission. And it does feel a bit tired. At least they mostly spared you the annoyance of fighting Fairy Dragons.

3. Difficulty is very low. This has to be among the easiest Chronicles, maybe 2nd easiest after Masters of the Elements. The first mission doesn't even have AI (you play vs. map), and the following 2-3 missions provide either a static AI, or an AI that stays in his isolated part of the map for a very long time and even if it shows up, it's far from being a threat. Under such conditions, you can take your time to gather stat boosters and spells, and let me tell you, they totally went overboard with this stuff. Getting to 20 allstats by mission 3 with three heroes rocking town portal, resurrection and meteor/chain? cmon.

4. I beat my record for highest ATT score (Tarnum reached 63 ATT in the last mission, topping Kilgor's record of 60 - from the Armageddon Blade's Festival of Life campaign, lol). yeah, they put so. Many. Boosters.

5. For so many boosters, the final fight was a joke. Mutare was a total pushover. I half-expected her to camp in the castle with 100 azure dragons and an Armageddon's Blade (this would make sense since the game encourages you to get power of the dragon father). But it's pointless since all mutare gets is 2 rust, crystal and azure freebies. By the time your secondary heroes' implosions hit for 4-5 thousands of damage points. Yeah, scaaa-ry.

6. The writing was... decent. Just not mindblowing. It was not the quality of Warlords of Wasteland, and slightly below Conquest/Revolt of Beastmasters, but not as bad as World Tree/Fiery Moon.

7. SPOILERS BELOW.

I half expected them to actually go through the idea of Tarnum, an immortal, actually marrying a regular-lifespan person and trying to adapt. Would be fun to read. They also missed the opportunity to make him think about the girl he was in love with in Warlords of the Wastelands. But nope. All we get is, IIRC, one event about her wanting to marry Tarnum - disappointing, I guess.

All in all, I think this was the second worst Chronicles game, after Masters of the Elements. Too easy, lazy design, and only DECENT writing. 3,5 / 10 material at best.

I'd feel robbed if I bought this at release for full price.

Final entry incoming, as I'm about to finish the final chapter of HoMM3. Brace yourself for the Sword of Frost, which will conclude my HoMM3 marathon.

Official congratulations, only one left

This is one of the chronicles that focuses more on story over gameplay and takes a long while till you meet any proper challenge. And the series has already had better writing by now. I can't help but be fond of this installment though Could be that it was the first chronicles I played and thus I did not have developed expectations game by game like you. I liked the faction and characters, had a nice vibe about it.

Conquest of the underworld was multitudes of levels above in terms of mapmaking but honestly, I still wish to strangle the one who designed the first map. That sick, sadistic little piece of strawberry pie, grah! And while the world tree an fiery moon had better gameplay, I remembered almost nothing about them by the time I replayed. Challenging but forgettable. Master of elements had some pretty interesting bits of story but it was so easy it hurt. More memorable than others but also disappointing.

It's a pretty flawed series all in all. Sword of frost has some pretty decent story but the ending pissed me off and I'd finished it before H4 was even out. My friend next door still remembers the face I made when I watched the H4 intro, heh.

Funny, when I played the Chronicles I did the "final chapters" (Revolt of the Beastmasters and Sword of Frost) before any others.
I got the CD with those two and was so excited that I couldn't keep myself from trying them although I had no idea what were the other chapters and who Tarnum was.
