ReShade plus NVIDIA/AMD/INTEL Settings
I decided to update this post with new shaders and settings that I found to create great visual results without dropping the FPS terribly.
In any case, ReShade is a post-processing injector, which means compared to without it, you may see higher CPU and GPU utilization and temperatures.
The package I'm linking below is geared towards a capable GPU (not Intel integrated graphics) but feel free to experiment within the ReShade settings (customized to open with 'CTRL + F12').
Independent from ReShade, what's new in this package are additional setup steps for NVIDIA and AMD graphics to enable tear-free, flicker-free, high-quality, high-FPS game experience. You MUST follow those steps completely (in respective txt files) for everything to work together.
UPDATE1: Package updated with INTEL settings and turn off FPS display by default.
UPDATE2: Second package for low-end systems, especially for those who have muddy textures on Intel graphics. Texture sharpening shader (Smart_Sharp) is enabled by default but if it's too taxing, you can disable it in the ReShade menu (CTRL+F12).
ReShade + NVIDIA/AMD/INTEL settings for better systems
ReShade + NVIDIA/AMD/INTEL settings for low-end systems
All you have to do is unzip the package in a way to put the d3d9.dll file in the 'bin' folder (where your game executable is). This works for both the vanilla H5, or the modded MMH5.5.
Let me know how it goes! Enjoy!
EDIT1: In the settings txt files, Part C is really mandatory with the ReShade package here.
EDIT2: If you turn off Vsync using the game cfg file (Part B), then you must really do the Vsync step in Part A.
Disclaimer: ReShade is an advanced, fully generic post-processing injector for games and video software developed by crosire. All of the mentioned and other techniques/shaders are developed by their respective developers as indicated. I am nobody

I have tried what you did before uploading, but with sharpening deactivated i couldn't see any meaningful improvement with the SMAA, FXAA etc fx. only sharpening made a difference. So the performance became irrelevant and i dropped it as well as v3 which is much harder to setup.

But the Adaptive Sharpening IS enabled. There must be something wrong going on. I'll check the file I uploaded but you check your end as well

Sorry for confusion, I meant I tried 3.0 and 2.0 SMAA before uploading my own file to moddb. I was kindoff explaining why I didn't use 3.0 (also because it has different license and is much harder to explain)

Oh, I see, but the real difference is about the AO (Ambient Occlusion) shaders between the two (SMAA and AdaptiveSharpen could very well be the same, I'm not sure).
The AO shader included (and enabled, if you haven't noticed) in the package you posted is not only very heavy-handed and yielding inferior AO effects, it's extremely tasking and is killing the FPS.
I'm telling you, the same 3 shaders enabled in the two, not only the new ones I posted looks better, it results in much higher FPS: 45-50 vs 25-30 on my laptop...

Okay, so have you also tried SSAO, Raymarch AO and SSGI? and which of those is best since in your screenshots I see no relevant difference, it looks more like a contrast change to me.

HBAO is theoretically the best, I tried them all (in ReShade 1.0.0) but didn't thoroughly experiment with the settings. I really like the custom MXAO shader included in ReShade 3.0.X (currently 3.0.6), which is actually an incarnation of SSAO but with indirect lightning and a good deal of considerations to make the AO effect more life-like. Any AO implementation is an attempt to simulate realistic environments, but most fall short due to bad implementation, which happens to depend on the game engine and the game itself. Then again, some players don't want realistic effects but rather exaggerated fancy effects... I believe Heroes players don't want that much fanciness but rather a smooth playing experience that looks good, but if you a have a powerful system, a little eye-candy can't hurt now, can it , which brings me to the following...
For those of you with rather powerful systems, HERE is a ReShade 3.0.6 package I customized for more realistic AO without totally killing the FPS.
It looks so much better (for keen eyes, that is ), but still drops my FPS to around 35. Again, this is on a laptop with highest in-game settings on MMH5.5 (which uses HD textures). If you have a powerful system, you should easily hit 60+ FPS, which is the most you need for a Heroes game.
Remember to follow the installation steps in the OP... Enjoy!
PS: If you have a rather weak system and only want Adaptive Sharpening to maximize your FPS, you can easily disable the other two effects by unchecking their boxes in the ReShade UI, Home tab.

what about the temperature of gpu using this mod? as far as i know, reshade is like enb, i used skyrim enb, while it was nice, the gpu temp raised to 73 celcius, for comparison, vanilla skyrim with highest settings is around 48 celcius

Packages are updated with ReShade version 4.90, which drastically speeds up shader load times.
You will definitely feel the difference at initial game start.
Highly recommended.

Thank you for your work with this mod!
I have slight problem with it there is no option for Vertical Sync Fast in NVIDIA Control Panel. I have all other options in Vertical Sync menu, but no Fast. It seems, that some other people have this problem too. What should I do with settings than?
Driver version 391.35 latest one for GTX 550 Ti

In this case, turn on vertical sync in the cfg file abd don't worry about Nvidia settings.

Nice. If my microprocessor wasn't at 95° Celsius when idle I would try this, ho ho ho.
Maybe after buying a new cooler...

I hope you meant under load. 95C idle is unreal. If you removed the heatsink, maybe.
