Pope Francis and the Vatican Euro

Since around 2007 I have been collecting coins, specifically euro coins. The two main areas involve the so-called commemorative 2-euro coins such as Italy's 2006 Winter Olympics coin to name just one of many, and at least one 1ct-2E series from every euro country, such as the recent Lithuanian one. The international side with the map of Europe and the 2 has been changed in 2007/2008, so as a sidequest I want series from before and after that era (if applicable) . But that's beside the point.

A country with a king (Belgium, Netherlands, Spain), a prince (Monaco), a grand duke (Luxembourg) or a pope (Vatican) is of particular interest, because these countries depict their head of state on all 8 coins (all but Spain and Monaco, that is, for they only do this on their 1 and 2 euro coin). And when he or she dies or abdicates and his or her successor ascends the throne (so to speak), a new series is created with the portait of the new head of state. Nothing out of the ordinary, that's just how things go. Belgium did it (1, 2), Spain did it (1, 2), the Netherlands did it (1, 2), Monaco did it...only Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has been around since the beginning.

The Vatican has a special place in this regard. It started with (St.) John Paul II. After his death in 2005, a new series was made with the coat of arms of the Camerlengo to commemorate the Sede Vacante. Then came Benedict XVI and all was back to normal, except that his predecessor's portrait was in profile and he is shown in three-quater view. After his abdication there was another Sede Vacante, this time just one coin. With Pope Francis I came yet another series, this time showing his portrait in three different ways: in profile, in three-quarter view, and frontal.

Ever since the start of his papacy, he has said and done exceptional things and I think it’s well known that he is above all a man of great modesty and humility. So much so, that this year the Vatican coins have been given a new design. Francis’ portrait no longer features on them, just the coat of arms of the Vatican itself. For me, this is of course a highly interesting development. It means a new collector’s item is being put on the market, which all Vatican coins are considering their rarity and market value (when in good condition). The underlying message and implications, however, are worth considering also. This is unprecendented, at least in the euro era, and it makes me wonder if this is going to be a one-timer or that an example such as this may be followed by future popes…provided that the euro still exists by then.

Interesting, are there any numbers given of how much coins with Francis his face have been produced? This is a big part of rarity and 'collecters edition'. If the numbers are low and the coins relatively cheap we as HC should buy all the coins it seems to me

Coin collecting is a great hobby, but ,why would someone want to collect the waste of goot metals that is the Brussels Ruble, is beyond me.

Go get a set of the coins of the national currencies of EU, before they were replaced by this placeholder. a much worthwile investment, if you're planning to sell it later imo.

You could find some of those that recently "joined" the Brussel's Ruble zone for a reasonable price.

I'd sell you my set of original Litas coins, but alas, I only have one set of them. And I didn't saved any of 10 litas bills(you could sell them to your gay friends)

But my ramblings aside, good luck with your collection none the less.

I've began to delve into antique money collecting myself recently, but my own collection is very small at the moment.

A set of Litas coins, one interwar period 1 Litas coin, one of the 1 ruble coins from the 1980 olympics. and several notes, which are a note of 20 reichsmarks, notes of 50 and 100 soviet rubles, and a note of the so called vagnorka(nominal of 10), the "interim" money of Lithuania.

@markmasters:

I have no idea, to be honest . I have one catalogue but it's already a few years old, but then there's always the internet to help us out!

@Kipshasz: Currently I have lived more years in the euro-era than I did in the time before it . There may be several reasons why I went into collecting euros rather than anything else. When they were first issued in 2002, you could buy this 'starter kit' for 25 Dutch guilders. In that same year, my grandfather and I went to a coin dealer/shop to buy the set of Luxembourg. That is when the seeds were planted but nothing serious happened until around 2007. My grandfather's collection far outweighs mine (he has all the different Vatican series for instance), but he told me once that he collected guilders and old Dutch coins too, which he eventually sold - much to his regret.

True enough, whenever I come across something 'old' and reasonably priced, I am tempted to buy it. A few years ago I got two of these (not my pictures) in good quality for their age and both 18th century (1737 and 1766). Long before that my grandfater gave me a 10 guilder-coin (again, not my picture). Although I later bought one in Proof-quality I still kept the 'original' .

Recently there was this issue of a coincard with three old quarters, each with a portrait of the then-ruling queen. It sold for just 9,95 a piece (one per customer) but already people have been bidding high on websites where people are putting it up for sale, once even as high as 50 euros. These quarters are not my area of collecting, but I'm glad I bought it anyway . I'm going to keep a close eye on these things in the future. Old/Ancient coins can be expensive, but if you know where to look you can easily put together a nice collection.

Speaking of funny collector's items, this time belonging to my area of interest, there is this. A Greek 0-euro coin, designed and minted in limited quantity in the Netherlands to poke fun at the Greek financial crisis and their impending Grexit. I should have bought more than one. One to keep, one or several to make people bid on .

It's an expensive hobby, puns aside. Not long ago, I was rummaging those sort of pots with coins I often forget somewhere in the house, specially now that I rarely use money for transactions.

I noticed this and that coin with a different image, then I went researching about numbers and serials. Unfortunately, any of my coins were really what they would call 'rare', but it was nice thinking that some of my 10 cent coins could turn up becoming 100 bucks, or even some of the smaller notes of 1 or 10 turning to 1,000.

My step-brother had a small collection of his own, whilst my sister had stamps collection. I always thought stamps much more beautiful and fun to have as a collection. I remember clearly that stamps from Nicaragua were very nice, usually exotic birds. There was some interesting from Laos. I think my brother has his coins until this day. I remember a conversation that he said he spend 2,000 bucks buying something. Just don't know how much commitment he is giving to this, or if he just buys things once per year.

@Kipshasz

Not quite. The monogram on the front side is that of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, hence the VOC), established in 1602 and dissolved in 1799. These particular coins, called 'duit' (dunno if there is an English translation) were the lowest currency overseas (primarily in Indonesia). To distinguish between the Dutch and overseas 'duit' and prevent smuggling, the ones with the monogram were minted for use outside the Netherlands only. The name 'duit' can still be found in some Dutch proverbs.

I got this information online, not from own knowledge .

The coins I have feature two different coat of arms on the rear side, indicating they were made in different provinces or cities (which is customary for pre-1816 Dutch coins). They cost about 10 euros a piece, which is quite low compared to their big brothers.

The value of coins and banknotes is dependent on addition to the condition of the demand and supply relation. For example, 1000 years old Chinese metal banknote costs €2.50!

So, in order to prepare for the full-scale arrival of the new Vatican coins, I bought this coincard (1, 2, 3). Since 2010 the Vatican issues a coincard each year with the 50ct piece in Brilliant Uncirculated quality. Since 2011 a "spin-off" series exists which also includes a stamp. I don't collect these, maybe one day I will, but one exception can be made for this one as it is the first of a new series. By that logic I should get at least the one from 2014 (nr. 5) which is the first to feature Pope Francis .

In other not-so-new-news: the three quarters (1, 2) I spoke of earlier ^^.
