Turkey Changes Constitution

Evet = Yes - Hayir = No Yellow bar is the ratio of votes counted.

The coastline and the Kurds said no but it wasn't enough, we now switch to presidency and Erdogan has more legal authority than ever before. We will no longer have prime ministers and the president will select his ministers (like the U.S. one selects his secretaries) as he sees fit.

Interesting that most of the south voted no. I'd have thought those where the areas which feared attacks the most. The European and western part in general also voted no, but odd that the eastern part did too.

Are there groupings in these parts that are against the president or what is your explanation of the large... spread(?) of no-areas?

The Eastern region is the Kurdish area, they are at odds with Erdogan since the peace negotiations with the PKK (you can think of them like the IRA of the Kurds) are over.

The coastlines are less conservative and secular in general compared to inner heartlands, so people in those regions are also against Erdogan since his politics are quite Islamist.

The next referendum coming up is reinstating the death penalty. Looks like Turkey's membership as a kebab in the EU is being removed from the premises.

What do you think Artu? Was the voting legit or false?

As I wrote somewhere else, I think this is pretty much the end of democracy in Turkey for quite a while. With one person having that much power, especially considering how he got that power in the first place, it's unlikely he will just accept having to hand it over in the future just like that. I suspect further laws and regulations that will reinforce his totalitarian grip on the country, while there's hardly anything anyone can do about it.

Furthermore, I fear for the lives of people who oppose(d) him; I wouldn't be surprised if he starts to repress those people really hard, especially since he already stated he would reintroduce the death penalty.

There are so many similarities between what he's doing and what Emperor Palpatine did in the Star Wars movies to get absolute power, it's not even funny.

There is nothing to suggest it was directly rigged, if that's what you're asking, inspectors from all parties were observant at the ballots.

But the government, having access to state funds, used every financial leverage and other similar advantages of being in power to their benefit, the propaganda was so one-sided and so out of proportion, some people assumed it was going to backfire. Well, 48 percent is still almost half the country, so I guess, it kind of did.

How much have terror attacks from IS affected the referendum? I don't know too much about Erdogan but I know his government has jailed or expelled quite a few journalists.

RoT becoming more and more involved into a big game, where the big and very dangerous guys playing, like in the bad old days of Planetary Crisis. - Tryin' to concentrate and centralize the public authority in this case, is not a very good idea - too much of risks get destabilized, but who the knows for sure. - <imho>
Besides the diagram is look sux, I mean from the first look it likes light-blue regions is voted totally "Eved" and the light-red ones totally "Hayir", the density cannot be discrete on such level of regions! It must be discrete only on the level of single citizen of the RoT. And the colors has been choose... hmm, let me guess is this diagram from the official government resource?

According to google translate, acilan means drop down, what exactly does 99,5% drop down mean in this context?

Btw. I heard a yes-sayer in the radio whose argument was that it was something that obviously had to be tried.
To me that sounded like when someone tried to make me drink alcohol by saying I didn't know what I missed before trying.. but you could say the same about anything, no matter how absurd, so it is not really an argument for anything.. and it's especially risky if the process may be non-reversible.

I think it's the number of votes that has been counted up until the figures were put in that picture.

Assuming that the vote was not manipulated, that's democracy at work at its best. Referendums in general should have stricter rules and require higher support to make something mandatory (50% + 1 vote is silly bordering irresponsible) but are the best expression of people's will currently employed even by the freest societies. Having the result that you want is just optional however.

France (beside many others) gives every year 150 millions euros to Turkey, in order to economically prepare EU entrance (not including the billions for refugees aid). I wonder when people will wake up and just burn the witches who betrayed them with the EU voodoo.

The 'funny' thing about these votes in my opinion is the feeling afterwards that many regret what they voted for.
At least that was my impression after the BrExit vote, and perhaps it'd be more interesting if a vote (i.e. ones opinion) could be valid at any moment (like an on/off button) and not only on the day of the vote to see how it changes.

My thought is that if people regret their vote it means they were not properly informed.
