I always felt that only 3 tiers are just not enough. You either leave big "power gaps" between tiers, or you end up with each tier containing creatures with such different stats that the whole idea of tier kinda loses its meaning. I personally prefer 4 tier system, it seems to be just the right amount.

The Centaur thing is a good point. I would also like to say though that just because Golems are technically in the same tier as peasants and gremlins doesn't mean that they're as weak as them. Golems would obviously be on the stronger end of the core units, with better stats but less growth.
Well looking and H6 (can't get stats for H7 easily), the highest growth at core level was 12/18 and the lowest was 6/9. Okay, that may do it, but I still sort of feel a Golem ought to be worth more than a couple of Gremlins.

I have a similar opinion.

I think I'm gonna revive this project and possibly start posting my novel again. I'm gonna tweak my existing Haven and Academy towns slightly because I've started to agree with the idea of 3 tiers not being enough and I have been working on my novel just not on here.

i like some of your ideas but honestly these still feel anti-innovative. H3 factions are vastly distant from that of H2 thematically and it still made a huge success. We all love both games, right?

There is no reason why Griffin always have to stick with haven (human/religious) faction. It looks just fine being in orc town or nature towns. At this point I just feel the closer new Hmm try to stick to H3, the bigger failure it ll receive.

I hope any one who works on H8 will be able to relieve himself from these constraint. I dont have any clue as to how the faction lineups SHOULD BE in the next game, but we should be more openminded and encourage them to do a better job at world building. Black dragon can just belong to haven/castle if they have a really lore to back it up. Who knows?

Yeah, maybe, but too much change at once has not historically gone over well with the community. Plus, with Haven being the only finished faction here (I've redone a lot of Academy and I'll edit it if kiryu lets me) it's hard for me to show off some more creative lineups because really Haven is a really difficult faction to balance innovation with conservation.

only when Ubisoft is the one who do it. I think everyone is quite cool with how factions changed for the first 4 games. The only beep I had with H4 is that they merged demon and undead into 1 faction. H5 (by NWC) also seems to have a totally different approach.

Knight faction in H2 had nothing to do with theocratic theme and the religious stuffs only kicked off since H3. It was kept moderated in H4 and H5(nwc) until it was pushed over the top in H5 by Ubi. In H4 it is still mostly a mix between technology and theocracy (with ballista and catapult)
Centaur used to fight along with the elf but it still looks natural in the babrian faction in H4. Dwarf and elf was in the same faction in H3 and in H4 they serve completely opposite ideologies, yet they still feel very convincing to me. Griffin use to be with the orges, then switch to human, then to elf, and Im ok with all of that.
What I mean is that, througout H1-h4, we have seen many changes in faction lineups and they are all OK. I also love to see some nostalgic elements but im afraid it would only be detrimental to new games. Im working on a warhammer related title so I know how counter-innovative it is to stick to established lore/value.

I'd rather let new developer free of all these restraint and let their imagination go wild, than forcing them to recreate H3 glory and meet another inevitable failure, well as long as they throw all the Ashan bullsnow to the trash can and start over a new world or something.

Well, I kept the theocratic Haven because I like moral ambiguity and I wanted them to not be the valiant heroic knights all the time. I'm also emphasizing the corruption and politics in a kind of Game of Thrones kind of way that I think better represents humans. I'm including my own additional original faction and my spin on stuff that only appeared once. I get not wanting to be too conservative but I don't think I am. I'd rather get rid of Ashan too but I started this as kind of a wishlist back when it seemed possible for HoMM8 actually happen, so I only partially scraped it.
