New to HOMM3, some assistance. :)

So I'm new to HOMM3, I have two friends who play this game a ton, they have gotten me in to it.  They use HoMM3 HD 3.716 Launcher (Not sure how outdated) to play and I am now hooked.  I'm trying to beat the game on its hardest difficulty to learn how to play with them.  They usually play Large maps with max number of hardest difficulty computers.  I'm presently trying to learn the game and have beat the first level (SOD), the second level of the first part of the campain... Crushing me. I have been trying to find some insider info on how to use Rampart efficiently but can not seem to find anything so does anyone have some tips they could recommend for me?

If I understand you correctly you wish to play the game in order to grow more in order to give a better match to your friends?

If that's the case I would advice you to stay away from the campaigns as they are nowhere near the typical multiplayer game.
It is better if you take a random map like Jebus and spam random games with the town you wish to get better with.

However if you insist on doing the campaigns there are tactics for each map if you google the map name. Guide

My general advice is to not underestimate your troops (they are stronger than they appear to be), engage in fights where the losses will be minimal (so avoid archers unless they really guard something crucial), only turtle (go for capitol/more troops) if you are locked in. Aquire Earth or Air magic and avoid the other schools. Due to how campaigns work, the better the magic skill and Power/Knowledge you start with, the more you can do early game.

If you're new to the game, I would recommend first getting the basic concept of the game in your fingers, by playing one of the lower difficulty levels first. Get a feel of who's who and what's what. Then, once you know what you're doing, you can increase the difficulty to challenge you.

And as said, campaigns are a totally different ballpark from multiplayer  random maps.

Coolest? Id say Tower - Titans, Castle - AAs, Necropolis - Dreadknights and  Stronghold - ABs.
But I guess you meant Strongest huh?

I understand the multiplayer way would help me in a multiplayer way better, the guys I play with create their own maps, are super competitive and create their own maps, very balanced, very thought out and I should be just playing those.

I want to play the campaigns purely for my own reasons.

I appreciate the advice, at first I was way to stretched out, then I was over conservative, I think I've found a good balance now.  I also didn't realize the spell book transferred over, nor do I know what spells are good/bad really yet.  Haste I like and same with chain lightning.

I appreciate the recommendation, I'm an all in or nothing type of person.  I lost the first mission like 9 times and then won rather easy, I like to learn based on failing at the hardest because then I learn quicker.  I feel like the computer doesn't make many mistakes at 200% which allows me to see what they are doing and adjust.

Just take heed, self made maps are hardly ever well balanced. The main issue is not the balance of units/artifacts, but the fact that the creator(s) got knowledge on the map layout, the spots of important buildings/treasuries or an overall "map" for how to fight the map.
This may not sound like much to you, but for an experienced player it is almost enough to say check-mate.

For campaigns spells are very important as they transfer like you found out.

The map makers have probably put limits to what spells are available, but otherwise getting hold of spells like Dimension Door, Fly, Town Portal, Armageddon, Resurrect, Blind, etc. are game winners vs. the AI.

Don't overestimate the quality of the AI, it has really big weaknesses on every difficulty.
I don't remember the exact differences between the 3 highest difficulties, hard, expert and impossible, but they are very minor apart from the starting resources.

Like said already, campaigns and multiplayer with friends don't really have much to do with each other, unless your friends make some rather special maps I suppose.

More concretely and advices that are easy to follow just from the top of my memory:
1) Get a good armies early, so if you play e.g. Dungeon or Necropolis go with Shakti or Galthran, their first level unit specialties means they have the potential to start with large armies.
2) Go for creature buildings as main priority, get your seventh level unit as fast as possible, if you can get it week 2 you're probably fine (for some towns, like Rampart and Dungeon you usually can't get it before week 2). If you can get it week 1 and perhaps say a level 7 dwelling on top you're looking really good.
3) Use lots of heroes, plan your movement well and you'll see your "kingdom" expand extremely fast, especially if you can manage to use most of your army in battles required by moving your army between heroes.
4) When you pick a chest, go for gold.
5) Prioritize what objects on the map are important enough for you to go for, e.g. creature dwellings marked on the map that is the same as you've build in your town won't only generate creatures in the dwelling, but generate extra production of said creature in your town as well.
6) For primary stats go for might stats over magic stats unless you're playing a campaign where you can often complete the map faster with a strong magic hero who can use his power right away against the weak AI.
Might stat is Attack and Defense, usually pick Attack over Defense. Power and Knowledge you only need a limited amount in and artifacts should be able to provide you this.

Like said before, if you play on a fixed map, you should probably watch it before playing, perhaps even play and plan it out depending on how committed you are to doing well.
If you're not allowed to do this, you can also get map information from cartographers and the spells View Air and View Earth.

There is a lot more, but that was just from the top of my head and I've probably forgotten things while writing it anyway.

I respect your opinion on the map stuff, the two guys that create the map are all about equality and balance.  They make the largest map and it takes them a very long time to perfect it so that it's a fair and equal match.  They've both been playing the game since it's birth and they are both top percentile logic/math in the nation.

I just want to make sure you understand what my point is. There are different kinds of "balance" in H3.

On the one hand it can be that town A has several +Attack artifacts nearby while town B got several +Defense artifacts. Assuming the +stats are equal, town A would have the advantage here.
Same thing applies to most objects, especially lv 5-7 dwellings.

The other kind of balance is map knowledge. For instance town A knows that it has a superb +Attack artifact near its castle but knows precious little what lies in the fog beyond.
Town B however may have less desirable artifacts around, but the player of town B knows that, for example, in the north-east corner on his/her territory rests Spirit of Opression or Helm of Heavenly Enlightenment and also what creature(s) guards it (or lv of the unit) and perhaps even its numbers. This gives player B the advantage of knowing the map layout and so allows him/her to carefully plan out how to spread the heroes. While player A simply must scout and take chances.

If you are going to play on player made maps then ask to be allowed to study the map before the online match takes place. Good luck!

Where do I find the map Jebus?  Doesn't come loaded in my multiplayer pack and can't find it online.  I need it to be for HD 3.716 Launcher

HERE (right-click>save-as) It's just a text file to be used with ingame random map generator, place it in game's DATA folder renamed as rmg.txt. It will replace the original template, to get original template back just delete/rename the file.

Welcome Dispo, and cool to read there are still people introduced to this game .

What town do you like to play the most? I would say Castle is one of the most easy towns to learn to master or even Rampart because of their powerfull early (ranged) units.

I'd say earth magic is the most powerfull magic and you should always try to learn it, Mass slow on it's own helps you clearing any roaming monsters (except for dragons of course) and even mass shield/stoneskin are very powerfull. If you play aginst your frineds though chances are they will take air magic, to counter mass slow with their mass haste....

Personally I prefer water magic over air magic as cure and despell are handy and bless increases damage of units for some towns insanely (mainly dungeon, fortress and cerberus from inferno benefit greatly from it)

Thanks for the info, so if I create random game after that what do I choose for maps in multiplyer?

Also thank you very much for the info on the towns, my friends only play on very hard competitive so it will give me a much better insight as to how I should be playing, I've never seen this site and I've looked for a lot of guides.

I'm trying to catch up to people that have been playing for a very long time, although I don't feel like the games actual skill cap is that insane so I think I'll catch up.

I am going to start with castle, I actually like the troops I like Rampart aswell but they are easy to counter with a simple blind..  Haste and Slow is what I've been told is the best, one for vs computers and one for vs friends, troop speed is key to victory.

What is despell good for and bless?

After right click -> save as ->rmg.txt in the DATA folder

When I open HD3_Launcher:

New Games -> Single player -> Random Map -> Large -> 1 Human -> 5 Computer -> No team -> Standard Road -> Random Water -> Random Monster Strength -> 160% Computer

Then I hit BEGIN and it comes back saying :

"Could not create a random map that fits current choices"

In case you don't know there is a powerful artifact that immunes your troops to Blind, just got to be lucky enough to find it.
Water has some excellent spells and don't worry about "wrong" choices in single-player, there is no such thing as wrong choices vs AI.
For multi yes I would favor Air and Earth over it.

The guys that I've been playing with don't allow anything that would be banned in competitive play to be used in games, I assume that something that would allow not-be-blind would be banned, if not then I haven't come across it as of yet, although that's just one artifact aomngst many and the odds of finding that one every game would probably be small if it was allowed so you're risking your chances of winning off one thing?

IMHO, if you're new to the game, playing with some competitive rules that are banning half of the game's features is not a very good way to discover the game.
Also do campaigns.
